Microstructure irreversibility plays a major role in the gigacycle fatigue crack initiation. Surface Persistent Slip Bands (PSB) formation on Copper and its alloy was well studied by Mughrabi et al. as typical fatigue crack nucleation in the very high cycle fatigue regime. In the present paper, Armco iron sheet specimens (1 mm thickness) were tested under ultrasonic frequency fatigue loading in tension–compression (R = −1). The test on the thin sheets has required a new design of specimen and new attachment of specimen. After gigacycle fatigue testing, the surface appearance was observed by optical and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Below about 88 MPa stress, there is no PSBs even after fatigue cycle up to 5 × 109. With a sufficient stress (above 88 MPa), PSBs in the ferrite grain was observed by optic microscope after 108 cycles loading. Investigation with the SEM shows that the PSB can appear in the body-centered cubic crystal in the gigacycle fatigue regime. Because of the grain boundary, however, the local PSB did not continually progress to the grain beside even after 109 cycles when the stress remained at the low level.  相似文献

Many engineering components are subjected to combined torsion and axial loading in their working conditions, and the cyclic combined loading can result in fatigue fracture after a very long life fatigue regime. The present investigation extends over a wider range of test conditions involving surface treatment and manufacturing effects such as machining, so as to understand the fatigue properties and damage mechanisms of the material beyond 109 cycles. This work reviews the effect of surface conditions on the fatigue behaviour of mechanical components in the gigacycle regime. Evidently, surface conditions can be variable and are due to very different reasons such as manufacturing effects like machining or final surface processes on the parts, heat treatment before and after manufacturing or environmental conditions like corrosion. In fact, this is a detailed comparative study based on the results of experiments carried out by our research team working in this domain. For this reason, it reveals a continuous decrease of the fatigue strength in the VHCF domain for the investigated materials under different surface conditions as important information for design engineers.Experimental investigation on the test specimens was performed at a frequency of 20 kHz with different stress ratios varying between R = ?1 and R = 0.7 at room temperature. All of the fatigue tests were carried out up to 1010 cycles. The damage mechanism was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).  相似文献

The tensile fatigue behavior of unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic and thermosetting laminates was examined at room temperature. Tension-tension cyclic fatigue tests were conducted under load control at a sinusoidal frequency of 10 Hz to obtain stress-fracture cycles (S-N) relationship. The fatigue limits of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic laminates (CF/PA6) and thermosetting laminates (CF/Epoxy) were found to be 28.0 MPa (48% of the tensile strength) and 56.2 MPa (63% of the tensile strength), respectively. Two types (in constant and incremental loading way) of loading-unloading low cycle fatigue tests were employed to investigate the modulus history of fatigue process for announcing the fatigue mechanism. The residual tensile strength of specimens that survived fatigue loading maintained with the increase of fatigue cycles and applied stress. Examination of the fatigue-loaded specimens revealed that the more flexible/ductile trend of resins and the formation of micro-cracks at the interface between fiber and matrix was facilitated during high fatigue loading (⩾fatigue limit stress), while no interfacial/matrix damage in resins was detected during low fatigue loading (<fatigue limit stress), which was consider to be the governing mechanism of strength maintain during fatigue loading.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of the plate thickness on the fatigue strength of laser stake-welded T-joints under the tension loading condition. Fatigue tests were conducted on specimens with plate thicknesses below 5 mm subjected to tension loading with the load ratio R = 0. The statistical analysis of the weld geometry showed a normal distribution of the each parameter that was measured. In addition, the parameters had similar proportions in comparison to the specimens with plate thicknesses above 5 mm. FE analysis was performed with the aim of determining the stress state in the joint along with the J-integral. If the square root of the J-integral, √ΔJ, is used as the fatigue strength assessment parameter, the fatigue strength obtained at five million cycles is similar as in the case of other steel welded joint types. The investigation concluded that the stress state changes with the reduction of the plate thicknesses and the contribution of fracture mode II becomes significant. However, using √ΔJ as a fatigue strength assessment parameter ensures that the complex state of the mixed fracture mode loading is accurately accounted for. This fact further enables the fatigue strength of laser stake-welded T-joints of any plate thicknesses to be described by means of a narrower scatterband than the one obtained by the nominal stress approach.  相似文献

The high cycle and Very-High-Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) properties of a structural steel with smooth and notched specimens were studied by employing a rotary bending machine with frequency of 52.5 Hz. For smooth specimens, VHCF failure did occur at fatigue cycles of 7.1 × 108 with the related SN curve of stepwise tendency. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used for the observations of the fracture surfaces. It shows that for smooth specimens the crack origination is surface mode in the failure regime of less than 107 cycles. While at VHCF regime, the material failed from the nonmetallic inclusion lies in the interior of material, leading to the formation of fisheye pattern. The dimensions of crack initiation region were measured and discussed with respect to the number of cycles to failure. The mechanism analysis by means of low temperature fracture technique shows that the nonmetallic inclusion in the interior of specimen tends to debond from surrounding matrix and form a crack. The crack propagates and results to the final failure. The stress intensity factor and fatigue strength were calculated to investigate the crack initiation properties. VHCF study on the notched specimens shows that the obtained SN curve decreases continuously. SEM analysis reveals that multiple crack origins are dominant on specimen surface and that fatigue crack tends to initiate from the surface of the specimen. Based on the fatigue tests and observations, a model of crack initiation was used to describe the transition of fatigue initiation site from subsurface to surface for smooth and notched specimens. The model reveals the influences of load, grain size, inclusion size and surface notch on the crack initiation transition.  相似文献

Thin sheets of nitrided 18Ni maraging steel are tested under cyclic tension (load ratio R = 0.1) in the very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime. The ultrasonic fatigue testing method with a cycling frequency of about 20 kHz has been further developed for these experiments. Sheet specimens with 0.35 mm thickness are mounted on a carrier specimen, they are pre-stressed and are forced to vibrate jointly. Between 107 and 109 cycles, fatigue cracks are initiated exclusively at internal TiN inclusions. The areas of the crack initiating inclusions projected perpendicular to the applied tensile stress are evaluated. The square root of inclusion areas, (areaINC)1/2 lies between 2.5 μm and 5.3 μm. Considering inclusions as cracks, their stress intensity range is between ΔKINC = 1.3 MPa m1/2 and 2.4 MPa m1/2. The sizes of crack initiating inclusions influence fatigue lifetimes. This is considered in a crack propagation model and by presenting lifetimes versus the stress amplitudes multiplied by (areaINC)1/12. A mean lifetime of 109 cycles is found at a stress amplitude of 22% of the tensile strength, which is comparable to other high strength steels tested under cyclic tension.  相似文献

This paper is aimed at evaluating the residual stress relaxation and its effect on the fatigue strength of AISI 316L steel ground surfaces in comparison to electro-polished surfaces. An experimental evaluation was performed using 3-point and 4-point bending fatigue tests at Rσ = 0.1 on two sets of notched specimens finished by electro-polishing and grinding. The residual stress fields were measured at the notch root of specimens, before and after fatigue tests, by means of the X-ray diffraction technique. It was found a degradation of about −35% for the 4-point bending fatigue limit at 2 × 106 cycles of the ground specimens in comparison to the electro-polished ones. This degradation is associated with a slight relaxation of the grinding residual stresses which remain significant tensile stresses at the stabilized state. While under the 3-point bending test, these residual stresses relax completely and provoke a noticeable increase of the fatigue limit estimated at about 50% in comparison to the 4-point bending fatigue test. The numerical evaluation of residual stress relaxation was carried out by FE analyses of the cyclic hardening behaviour of the ground layer. The isotropic and nonlinear kinematic model proposed by Chaboche was used and calibrated for the base material and the ground layer. The results show that residual stresses relax to a stabilized state characterized by elastic-shakedown response. This stabilization is occurred after the first cycle of the 4-point bending test corresponding to the higher stress concentration (Kt-4p = 1.66), while it requires many cycles under the 3-point bending test corresponding to the lower stress concentration (Kt-3p = 1.54). The incorporation of stabilized residual stress values into the Dang Van’s criterion has permitted to predict with an acceptable accuracy the fatigue limits under both bending modes.  相似文献

Tension–tension fatigue properties of SiC fiber reinforced Ti–6Al–4V matrix composite (SiCf/Ti–6Al–4V) at room temperature were investigated. Fatigue tests were conducted under a load-controlled mode with a stress ratio 0.1 and a frequency 10 Hz under a maximum applied stress ranging from 600 to 1200 MPa. The relationship between the applied stress and fatigue life was determined and fracture surfaces were examined to study the fatigue damage and fracture failure mechanisms using SEM. The results show that, the fatigue life of the SiCf/Ti–6Al–4V composite decreases substantially in proportion to the increase in maximum applied stress. Moreover, in the medium and high life range, the relationship between the maximum applied stress and cycles to failure in the semi-logarithmic system could be fitted as a linear equation: Smax/μ = 1.381  0.152 × lgNf. Fractographic analysis revealed that fatigue fracture surfaces consist of a fatigued region and a fast fracture region. The fraction of the fatigued region with respect to the total fracture surface decreases with the increase of the applied maximum stresses.  相似文献

This study has performed the experimental study to assess the structural safety of a bolster frame that is applied to the bogie system of Korean tilting train. In order to achieve this goal, firstly, loading conditions imposed on the bolster frame were investigated. Based on the international standard and dynamic analysis, the loading conditions were derived. In this study, the dynamic load cases that consider the carbody tilting effect were established. The structural safety of the bolster frame was evaluated by static test under these static loads and the fatigue strength was assessed using Goodman diagram. From the assessment, the bolster frame has satisfied the structural safety. In addition, fatigue test was carried out up to 10 × 106 cycles under tilting load condition established in this study. The inspection of fatigue crack using NDT method was conducted at 6 × 106 and 10 × 106 cycle.  相似文献

This paper is focused on the effect of sea water corrosion on the gigacycle fatigue strength of a martensitic–bainitic hot rolled steel R5 used for manufacturing off-shore mooring chains for petroleum platforms in the North Sea. Crack initiation fatigue tests in the regime of 106 to 1010 cycles were carried out on smooth specimens under three different environment conditions: (i) without any corrosion (virgin state) in air, (ii) in air after pre-corrosion, and (iii) in-situ corrosion-fatigue under artificial sea water flow. A drastic effect of sea water corrosion was found: the median fatigue strength beyond 108 cycles is divided by 5 compared to virgin state specimens. The crack initiation sites were corrosion pits caused by pre-corrosion or created during corrosion-fatigue under sea water flow. Furthermore some sub-surface and internal crack initiations were observed on specimens without any corrosion (virgin state). Crack propagation curves were obtained in mode I in air and under sea water flow. Calculation of the stress intensity factor at the tip of cracks emanating from hemispherical surface pits combined with the Paris–Hertzberg–Mc Clintock crack growth rate model showed that fatigue crack initiation period represents most of the fatigue life in the VHCF regime. Additional original experiments have shown physical evidences that the fatigue strength in the gigacycle regime under sea water flow is mainly governed by the corrosion process with a strong coupling between cyclic loading and corrosion.  相似文献

The effect of stitch density (SD) on fatigue life, stiffness degradation and fatigue damage mechanisms in carbon/epoxy (T800SC/XNRH6813) stitched using Vectran thread is presented in this paper. Moderately stitched composite (SD = 0.028/mm2; ‘stitched 6 × 6’) and densely stitched composite (SD = 0.111/mm2; ‘stitched 3 × 3’) are tested and compared with composite without stitch thread (SD = 0.0; ‘unstitched’). The experiments show that the fatigue life of stitched 3 × 3 is moderately better than that of unstitched and stitched 6 × 6. Stitched 3 × 3 pattern is also able to postpone the stiffness degradation onset. The improvement of fatigue properties and postponement of stiffness degradation onset in stitched 3 × 3 is primarily due to an effective impediment of edge-delamination. Quantification of damage at various cycles and stress levels shows that stitch density primarily affects the growth rate of delamination.  相似文献

Investigations are presented in this paper on quenched and tempered steel 42CrMoS4 from two batches, with two different tensile strengths (Rm = 1100 MPa, 1350 MPa) but with similar microstructure, and a nodular cast iron EN-GJS-900-2 (Rm = 930 MPa). Fatigue tests with smooth (Kt = 1) and notched (Kt = 1.75) specimens were performed at R = −1 and R = 0 up to the number of cycles N = 2·109 in order to determine the fatigue strength behaviour and failure mechanisms, especially in the VHCF-region. Failure in smooth specimens often initiated at material defects such as oxides in the quenched and tempered steel and shrinkage holes in the nodular cast iron. Firstly, a fatigue strength analysis was performed that did not consider these defects. A possibility of analysis of experimental data including VHCF-results has been discussed. Next, a linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis was performed in order to describe the defect behaviour, assuming that the defects act like cracks. The results showed that there are lower limit or threshold values of the stress intensity factor range ΔK for crack propagation in both materials. Analysis of defects and defect distribution in run-out specimens confirmed this conclusion. From the comparison of the results with an SN curve from the design code FKM-Guideline Analytical strength assessment of components, recommendations for design and assessment of components have been derived.  相似文献

The fatigue strength of an annealed Ti-15Zr-4Nb-4Ta alloy at 1 × 108 cycles was approximately 730 MPa. The fatigue strength of its alloy was much improved following an ageing treatment after a solution treatment. The tension-to-tension fatigue strengths of annealed Ti-6Al-4V, V-free Ti-6Al-7Nb, Ti-6Al-2Nb-1Ta, and Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloys at 1 × 108 cycles were approximately 685, 600, 700, and 350 MPa, respectively. The ratios of fatigue strength at 1 × 108 cycles to ultimate tensile strength for the α- and (α + β)-type Ti materials were higher than 65%.  相似文献

Fatigue tests were performed on welded joints made of high-strength, low-alloy steel (S690). Different welding processes were tested, resulting in welds with different defects essentially consisting in lack of penetration. Fatigue tests were run with both constant and variable amplitude loading. The experimental results were compared to predictions obtained by applying local approaches (local stress and local strain) and the concepts of fracture mechanics. The local stress approach allowed the fatigue strength of joints in constant amplitude loading (for fatigue above 2 × 106) to be predicted, but the assumption of a constant value of the slope k = 3 for all S–N curves led to non-conservative predictions of shorter lives. The local strain approach allowed the fatigue strength of the joints under constant amplitude to be predicted. Although, these predictions matched the experimental data well for both small and large defects in the entire cycle number range, they failed to predict the behaviour of joints under variable amplitude loading. Conversely, the fracture mechanics approach proved to be more efficient in predicting the fatigue behaviour of welded joint under variable amplitude loading.  相似文献

This article studies the fatigue properties of a carbon-fibre cross-ply non-crimp fabric reinforced epoxy composite. Tensile–tensile fatigue cycling was carried out at load levels corresponding to the onset of damage in a static tensile test, in machine, cross and bias direction. Specimens in machine and cross direction did not fail up to 106 cycles; specimens in bias direction had an average fatigue life Nmax of 3 × 105 cycles. Stiffness degradation in bias direction samples was found to be more severe than in machine or cross direction. Damage development in the samples was studied by means of X-ray photography and appears to show remarkable resemblance to the development under a static tensile test and can be qualitatively compared to the behaviour of non-stitched UD laminates. Post-fatigue tensile tests were done at various stages of the fatigue life. Small differences in damage onset strain level can be found. Failure strain of bias direction tested samples shows significant decrease upon cycling.  相似文献

This paper investigates the anisotropic properties of short glass fibre reinforced polyamide 6.6 (PA66-GF35) under tension–tension and tension–compression cyclic loading. Tensile fatigue tests were carried out on dog-bone specimens, machined out from injection-moulded plates 80 × 80 mm, of three different thicknesses t (1 and 3 mm) at three different nominal fibre orientation angles θ (0°, 30° and 90°). The tests were carried out at RT as well as at 130 °C.The Tsai–Hill failure criterion, modified to account for cyclic loading, is applied to the fatigue data for estimating the fatigue strength parameters of the material under investigation. Results are compared to the strength parameters obtained under quasi-static loading in a previous part of this work [De Monte M, Moosbrugger E, Quaresimin M. Influence of temperature and thickness on the off-axis behaviour of short glass fibre reinforced polyamide 6.6 – quasi-static loading. Composites: Part A, 2010;41(10):1368–79]. The experimental results highlight how specimen thickness remarkably affects mechanical properties: the thinner the specimen the higher will be the degree of anisotropy. Also temperature strongly reduces the fatigue strength under cyclic loading. The Tsai–Hill criterion allows for an adequate fitting of experimental data at the investigated temperatures and load ratios.  相似文献

In this study, the fatigue behavior of aluminum alloy 2024T3 v-notched specimens repaired with composite patch under block loading was analyzed experimentally. Two loading blocks were applied: increasing and decreasing at two stress ratio: R = 0 and R = 0.1. Failed samples were examined under scanning electron microscope at different magnifications to analyze their fractured surfaces. The obtained results show that under increasing blocks, the crack growth is accelerated for both repaired and unrepaired specimens. This is attributed to the increase of the loading amplitude in the second block. A retardation effect was observed for decreasing blocks loading in unrepaired specimens. However, this retardation effect is attenuated by the presence of the patch which lead to lower fatigue life for repaired specimens.  相似文献

This paper presents the recent experimental results aimed at disclosing the loading frequency effect on the fatigue behavior of a plain concrete and two types of fiber-reinforced concrete, using polypropylene and steel fibers. Compressive fatigue tests were conducted on 123 cubic specimens (100 mm in edge length). Four different loading frequencies, 4 Hz, 1 Hz, 1/4 Hz and 1/16 Hz, were employed. The maximum stress applied on the specimen was 85% of its compressive strength and the stress ratio was kept constant as 0.3. The results show that the loading frequency effect on the fatigue behavior of the plain concrete is pronounced. The fatigue life (the number of cycles to failure) at lower frequencies is less than that at higher frequencies. However, the fibers do improve the fatigue behavior significantly under low loading frequencies. Such trend can be attributed to the effectiveness of the fibers in bridging cracks, and thus inhibiting the crack extension under cyclic loads.  相似文献

The paper presents the fatigue test results of rectangular cross-section specimens made of 10HNAP (S355J2G1W) steel. The specimen height to width ratio was 1.5. The tests under bending with torsion were performed for the following ratios of bending to torsional moments MaB/MaT = 0.47, 0.94, 1.87 and the loading frequency 26.5 Hz. Nominal stresses were chosen for the equivalent stress according to the Huber-Mises hypothesis equal to 360 MPa. The tests were performed in the high cycle fatigue regime for the stress ratio R = −1 and phase shift between bending and torsion loading equal to ϕ = 0 and 90°. Crack initiation and propagation phases were observed on the specimen surface using the optical microscope (magnification 20×) with an integrated digital camera. The test results for the fatigue crack growth rate versus the stress intensity factor range for mode I and mode III have been described with the Paris equation.  相似文献

An extensive experimental program was carried out to investigate and understand the sequence of damage development throughout the life of open-hole composite laminates loaded in tension–tension fatigue. Quasi-isotropic carbon/epoxy laminates, with stacking sequence [452/902/−452/02]S, [45/90/−45/0]2S and [45/90/−45/0]4S were examined. These were selected on the basis that under quasi-static loading the [452/902/−452/02]S configuration exhibited a delamination dominated mode of failure whilst the [45/90/−45/0]2S and [45/90/−45/0]4S configurations showed a fibre dominated failure mode, previously described as “pull-out” and “brittle” respectively. Specimens were fatigue loaded to 1 × 106 cycles or catastrophic failure, which ever occurred first. A number of tests were interrupted at various points as the stiffness dropped with increasing cycles, which were inspected using X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning. A static residual strength program was carried out for run-out specimens of each configuration.  相似文献
