Reversible hydrogen embrittlement of structural steels results in serious technological problems, but the physical nature of this complex phenomenon has been insufficiently studied. We present new ideas on its mechanism and use fundamental concepts of the modern physics of metals, literature data, and results of our experiments with specimens made of St3 steel, 09G2S low-carbon steel, and a low-alloyed high-strength steel of type AB to substantiate these ideas. We show that plastic strain causing the appearance of incipient cracks in a metal is a necessary condition for development of reversible hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen, having a high diffusive mobility, is transported by moving dislocations to the places of crack initiation in the course of plastic deformation. The physical reason for the embrittling influence of hydrogen consists in the decrease in the critical stress necessary for the loss of stability of incipient microcracks and the transition to their autocatalytic propagation. The new ideas enable us to explain the established regularities of reversible hydrogen embrittlement and can also serve as a basis for further investigations of this phenomenon and the development of methods for its prevention. This paper discusses the issues involved with the development and implementation of an on-line postgraduate course for remote-access students. This is especially relevant for students who wish to pursue postgraduate qualifications, or to update their skill base, while continuing with their career. Although remote-access education would not be considered by the author as the delivery method of choice for the majority of an engineering student's educational needs, there will always be niche educational demands that can be addressed by such an approach. Although the electronic presentation of course notes via the Internet is becoming more commonplace, the ideas outlined in this paper go beyond this basic concept. An important skill for any design engineer is the ability to embed a computational element into a mechanical product or process. A course in embedded computing suitable for senior undergraduates in a mechanical engineering curriculum is described. The course, which includes both lectures and laboratory exercises, has evolved through our experiences in teaching embedded computing during the past decade and a half. In preparing to modernize this course, we have reexamined the academic ideas on which the course is based and the conflicting issues involved in developing a course in embedded computing with a hands-on laboratory. These issues and our expectations for the future of embedded computing instruction in our department are discussed.  相似文献

We consider the role of small scale geometric and material features at geometric discontinuities other than a crack and study their relevance to fracture analysis. We are motivated by relatively recent experiments that show that under certain circumstances fracture initiation from geometric (sharp notches) and material (bimaterial interface corners) discontinuities can be successfully correlated with critical values of stress intensities that arise from a linear elastic analysis of the corresponding singular stress state. Implicit to such an approach is the idea that perturbations of the elastic fields near the discontinuity, which of course destroy the singular stresses, occur over a scale that is sufficiently small so that the complex behavior in this region is correlated by the elastic stress intensity. While the fracture mechanician will recognize these ideas as extensions of classical linear elastic fracture mechanics, significant differences exist and these are discussed in detail. We motivate the ideas through the use of a series of model problems in antiplane shear that are mostly amenable to exact analyses. We expect that the ideas carry through, albeit at the expense of far more complicated analysis, to planar and even three-dimensional situations.  相似文献
