This paper presents a distortion resistant 20‐node hexahedron element that employs two different sets of shape functions for the trial and test functions. The formulation seeks to satisfy the continuity and completeness requirements by exploiting the intrinsic properties of these two sets of shape functions. Several test problems are used to assess the performance of the element under various mesh distortions. The ability of the proposed as well as the classical 20‐node element to maintain solution accuracy under severe mesh distortions has been studied. The proposed element exhibits a very high tolerance to mesh distortions. In particular, for problems involving linear and quadratic displacement fields, the element is capable of reproducing exact solution under all admissible geometrical distortions of the mesh. For test problems involving higher‐order displacement fields, the performance of the present element is in general better than that of the classical element. In this paper, a comprehensive account on using mesh‐free methods to simulate strain localization in inelastic solids is presented. Using an explicit displacement‐based formulation in mesh‐free computations, high‐resolution shear‐band formations are obtained in both two‐dimensional (2‐D) and three‐dimensional (3‐D) simulations without recourse to any mixed formulation, discontinuous/incompatible element or special mesh design. The numerical solutions obtained here are insensitive to the orientation of the particle distributions if the local particle distribution is quasi‐uniform, which, to a large extent, relieves the mesh alignment sensitivity that finite element methods suffer. Moreover, a simple h‐adaptivity procedure is implemented in the explicit calculation, and by utilizing a mesh‐free hierarchical partition of unity a spectral (wavelet) adaptivity procedure is developed to seek high‐resolution shear‐band formations. Moreover, the phenomenon of multiple shear band and mode switching are observed in numerical computations with a relatively coarse particle distribution in contrast to the costly fine‐scale finite element simulations. This paper presents a computational method for converting a tetrahedral mesh to a prism–tetrahedral hybrid mesh for improved solution accuracy and computational efficiency of finite element analysis. The proposed method performs this conversion by inserting layers of prism elements and deleting tetrahedral elements in sweepable sub‐domains, in which cross‐sections remain topologically identical and geometrically similar along a certain sweeping path. The total number of finite elements is reduced because roughly three tetrahedral elements are converted to one prism element. The solution accuracy of the finite element analysis improves since a prism element yields a more accurate solution than a tetrahedral element due to the presence of higher‐order terms in the shape function. Only previously known method for creating such a prism–tetrahedral hybrid mesh was to manually decompose a target volume into sweepable and non‐sweepable sub‐volumes and mesh each of the sub‐volumes separately. Unlike the previous method, the proposed method starts from a cross‐section of a tetrahedral mesh and replaces the tetrahedral elements with layers of prism elements until prescribed quality criteria can no longer be satisfied. A series of computational fluid dynamics simulations and structural analyses have been conducted, and the results verified a better performance of prism–tetrahedral hybrid mesh. The paper concerns the development of robust and high accuracy finite elements with only corner nodes using a partition‐of‐unity‐based finite‐element approximation. Construction of the partition‐of‐unity‐based approximation is accomplished by a physically defined local function of displacements. A 4‐node quadratic tetrahedral element and a 3‐node quadratic triangular element are developed. Eigenvalue analysis shows that linear dependencies in the partition‐of‐unity‐based finite‐element approximation constructed for the new elements are eliminable. Numerical calculations demonstrate that the new elements are robust, insensitive to mesh distortion, and offer quadratic accuracy, while also keeping mesh generation extremely simple. Adaptive algorithms are important tools for efficient finite‐element mesh design. In this paper, an error controlled adaptive mesh‐refining algorithm is proposed for a non‐conforming low‐order finite‐element method for the Reissner–Mindlin plate model. The algorithm is controlled by a reliable and efficient residual‐based a posteriori error estimate, which is robust with respect to the plate's thickness. Numerical evidence for this and the efficiency of the new algorithm is provided in the sense that non‐optimal convergence rates are optimally improved in our numerical experiments. The finite element mesh of the unbounded wave problem often contains a large number of degrees of freedom. Moreover, the wave reflection along the mesh boundary cannot be avoided if only the traditional time‐domain finite element method (FEM) is used. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to overcome those drawbacks and discuss how to use the three‐dimensional FEM to simulate the soil vibration due to a moving high‐speed train across bridges. A number of finite element analyses (FEA) including the isolation schemes of in‐filled and open trenches were performed. The appropriate mesh dimension in the direction of the railroad is suggested and validated. Moreover, the 3‐node wheel element for simulating the moving train and the least‐squares method for finding foundation properties are proposed. Since the finite element mesh contains a large number of degrees of freedom, the conjugated gradient method with the SSOR preconditioning scheme is recommended. In conclusion, this study indicates that the difficulty of the FEA for unbounded problems can be overcome efficiently even by using a personal computer. In spite of significant advancements in automatic mesh generation during the past decade, the construction of quality finite element discretizations on complex three‐dimensional domains is still a difficult and time demanding task. In this paper, the partition of unity framework used in the generalized finite element method (GFEM) is exploited to create a very robust and flexible method capable of using meshes that are unacceptable for the finite element method, while retaining its accuracy and computational efficiency. This is accomplished not by changing the mesh but instead by clustering groups of nodes and elements. The clusters define a modified finite element partition of unity that is constant over part of the clusters. This so‐called clustered partition of unity is then enriched to the desired order using the framework of the GFEM. The proposed generalized finite element method can correctly and efficiently deal with: (i) elements with negative Jacobian; (ii) excessively fine meshes created by automatic mesh generators; (iii) meshes consisting of several sub‐domains with non‐matching interfaces. Under such relaxed requirements for an acceptable mesh, and for correctly defined geometries, today's automated tetrahedral mesh generators can practically guarantee successful volume meshing that can be entirely hidden from the user. A detailed technical discussion of the proposed generalized finite element method with clustering along with numerical experiments and some implementation details are presented. The paper concerns a well‐known two‐dimensional nine‐node quadrilateral element MITC9, which is based on two‐level approximations of strains (assumed strain method). The element has good accuracy, but does not pass the patch test. As the first improvement, we propose a modification of the element's transformations, partly resolving the problem with the patch test. The source of the problem is the use of covariant components in a (local) natural co‐basis, different at each sampling point. As the second improvement, we use the corrected shape functions of Celia MA, Gray WG. An improved isoparametric transformation for finite element analysis. International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering 1984; 20 :1447–1459, extending their applicability to the nine‐node element for plane elasticity and the 3 × 3 integration. Originally, they are tested for an eight‐node element for the heat conduction equation and the 4 × 4 integration. The improved element, designated as MITC9i, is based on the Green strain and derived from the potential energy for the plane stress condition. It is subjected to a range of tests, to confirm that it passes the patch test for several types of mesh distortions, to prove its coarse mesh accuracy and the absence of locking as well as to establish its sensitivity to mesh distortions. The improved element MITC9i performs substantially better than the MITC9 element, QUAD9** element, and our previous 9‐AS element.Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new BEM for level‐set based topology optimization. In the proposed BEM, the nodal coordinates of the boundary element are replaced with the nodal level‐set function and the nodal coordinates of the Eulerian mesh that maintains the level‐set function. Because this replacement causes the nodal coordinates of the boundary element to disappear, the boundary element mesh appears to be immersed in the Eulerian mesh. Therefore, we call the proposed BEM an immersed BEM. The relationship between the nodal coordinates of the boundary element and the nodal level‐set function of the Eulerian mesh is clearly represented, and therefore, the sensitivities with respect to the nodal level‐set function are strictly derived in the immersed BEM. Furthermore, the immersed BEM completely eliminates grayscale elements that are known to cause numerical difficulties in topology optimization. By using the immersed BEM, we construct a concrete topology optimization method for solving the minimum compliance problem. We provide some numerical examples and discuss the usefulness of the constructed optimization method on the basis of the obtained results. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An adaptive remeshing procedure is proposed for discontinuous finite element limit analysis. The procedure proceeds by iteratively adjusting the element sizes in the mesh to distribute local errors uniformly over the domain. To facilitate the redefinition of element sizes in the new mesh, the interelements discontinuous field of elemental bound gaps is converted into a continuous field, ie, the intensity of bound gap, using a patch‐based approximation technique. An analogous technique is subsequently used for the approximation of element sizes in the old mesh. With these information, an optimized distribution of element sizes in the new mesh is defined and then scaled to match the total number of elements specified for each iteration in the adaptive remeshing process. Finally, a new mesh is generated using the advancing front technique. This adaptive remeshing procedure is repeated several times until an optimal mesh is found. Additionally, for problems involving discontinuous boundary loads, a novel algorithm for the generation of fan‐type meshes around singular points is proposed explicitly and incorporated into the main adaptive remeshing procedure. To demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed method, some classical examples extracted from the existing literary works are studied in detail.  相似文献

We propose a robust immersed finite element method in which an integral equation formulation is used to enforce essential boundary conditions. The solution of a boundary value problem is expressed as the superposition of a finite element solution and an integral equation solution. For computing the finite element solution, the physical domain is embedded into a slightly larger Cartesian (box‐shaped) domain and is discretized using a block‐structured mesh. The defect in the essential boundary conditions, which occurs along the physical domain boundaries, is subsequently corrected with an integral equation method. In order to facilitate the mapping between the finite element and integral equation solutions, the physical domain boundary is represented with a signed distance function on the block‐structured mesh. As a result, only a boundary mesh of the physical domain is necessary and no domain mesh needs to be generated, except for the non‐boundary‐conforming block‐structured mesh. The overall approach is first presented for the Poisson equation and then generalized to incompressible viscous flow equations. As an example of fluid–structure coupling, the settling of a heavy rigid particle in a closed tank is considered. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper describes a p‐hierarchical adaptive procedure based on minimizing the classical energy norm for the scaled boundary finite element method. The reference solution, which is the solution of the fine mesh formed by uniformly refining the current mesh element‐wise one order higher, is used to represent the unknown exact solution. The optimum mesh is assumed to be obtained when each element contributes equally to the global error. The refinement criteria and the energy norm‐based error estimator are described and formulated for the scaled boundary finite element method. The effectivity index is derived and used to examine quality of the proposed error estimator. An algorithm for implementing the proposed p‐hierarchical adaptive procedure is developed. Numerical studies are performed on various bounded domain and unbounded domain problems. The results reflect a number of key points. Higher‐order elements are shown to be highly efficient. The effectivity index indicates that the proposed error estimator based on the classical energy norm works effectively and that the reference solution employed is a high‐quality approximation of the exact solution. The proposed p‐hierarchical adaptive strategy works efficiently. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a FEM with mesh‐separation‐based approximation technique that separates a standard element into three geometrically independent elements. A dual mapping scheme is introduced to couple them seamlessly and to derive the element approximation. The novel technique makes it very easy for mesh generation of problems with complex or solution‐dependent, varying geometry. It offers a flexible way to construct displacement approximations and provides a unified framework for the FEM to enjoy some of the key advantages of the Hansbo and Hansbo method, the meshfree methods, the semi‐analytical FEMs, and the smoothed FEM. For problems with evolving discontinuities, the method enables the devising of an efficient crack‐tip adaptive mesh refinement strategy to improve the accuracy of crack‐tip fields. Both the discontinuities due to intra‐element cracking and the incompatibility due to hanging nodes resulted from the element refinement can be treated at the elemental level. The effectiveness and robustness of the present method are benchmarked with several numerical examples. The numerical results also demonstrate that a high precision integral scheme is critical to pass the crack patch test, and it is essential to apply local adaptive mesh refinement for low fracture energy problems. To translate and transfer solution data between two totally different meshes (i.e. mesh 1 and mesh 2), a consistent point‐searching algorithm for solution interpolation in unstructured meshes consisting of 4‐node bilinear quadrilateral elements is presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm has the following significant advantages: (1) The use of a point‐searching strategy allows a point in one mesh to be accurately related to an element (containing this point) in another mesh. Thus, to translate/transfer the solution of any particular point from mesh 2 to mesh 1, only one element in mesh 2 needs to be inversely mapped. This certainly minimizes the number of elements, to which the inverse mapping is applied. In this regard, the present algorithm is very effective and efficient. (2) Analytical solutions to the local co‐ordinates of any point in a four‐node quadrilateral element, which are derived in a rigorous mathematical manner in the context of this paper, make it possible to carry out an inverse mapping process very effectively and efficiently. (3) The use of consistent interpolation enables the interpolated solution to be compatible with an original solution and, therefore guarantees the interpolated solution of extremely high accuracy. After the mathematical formulations of the algorithm are presented, the algorithm is tested and validated through a challenging problem. The related results from the test problem have demonstrated the generality, accuracy, effectiveness, efficiency and robustness of the proposed consistent point‐searching algorithm. In this paper, a new metric advancing front surface mesh generation scheme is suggested. This new surface mesh generator is based on a new geometrical model employing the interpolating subdivision surface concept. The target surfaces to be meshed are represented implicitly by interpolating subdivision surfaces which allow the presence of various sharp and discontinuous features in the underlying geometrical model. While the main generation steps of the new generator are based on a robust metric surface triangulation kernel developed previously, a number of specially designed algorithms are developed in order to combine the existing metric advancing front algorithm with the new geometrical model. As a result, the application areas of the new mesh generator are largely extended and can be used to handle problems involving extensive changes in domain geometry. Numerical experience indicates that, by using the proposed mesh generation scheme, high quality surface meshes with rapid varying element size and anisotropic characteristics can be generated in a short time by using a low‐end PC. Finally, by using the pseudo‐curvature element‐size controlling metric to impose the curvature element‐size requirement in an implicit manner, the new mesh generation procedure can also generate finite element meshes with high fidelity to approximate the target surfaces accurately. We extend Locally Refined (LR) B‐splines to LR T‐splines within the Bézier extraction framework. This discretization technique combines the advantages of T‐splines to model the geometry of engineering objects exactly with the ability to flexibly carry out local mesh refinement. In contrast to LR B‐splines, LR T‐splines take a T‐mesh as input instead of a tensor‐product mesh. The LR T‐mesh is defined, and examples are given how to construct it from an initial T‐mesh by repeated meshline insertions. The properties of LR T‐splines are investigated by exploiting the Bézier extraction operator, including the nested nature, linear independence, and the partition of unity property. A technique is presented to remove possible linear dependencies between LR T‐splines. Like for other spline technologies, the Bézier extraction framework enables to fully use existing finite element data structures.  相似文献

The choice of mesh generation and numerical solution strategies for two‐dimensional finite element models of fluvial flow have previously been based chiefly on experience and rule of thumb. This paper develops a rationale for the finite element modelling of flow in river channels, based on a study of flow around an annular reach. Analytical solutions of the two‐dimensional Shallow Water (St. Venant) equations are developed in plane polar co‐ordinates, and a comparison with results obtained from the TELEMAC‐2‐D finite element model indicates that of the two numerical schemes for the advection terms tested, a flux conservative transport scheme gives better results than a streamline upwind Petrov–Galerkin technique. In terms of mesh discretization, the element angular deviation is found to be the most significant control on the accuracy of the finite element solutions. A structured channel mesh generator is therefore developed which takes local channel curvature into account in the meshing process. Results indicate that simulations using curvature‐dependent meshes offer similar levels of accuracy to finer meshes made up of elements of uniform length, with the added advantage of improved model mass conservation in regions of high channel curvature. Parametric and implicit methods are traditionally thought to be two irrelevant approaches in structural shape optimization. Parametric method works as a Lagrangian approach and often uses the parametric boundary representation (B‐rep) of curves/surfaces, for example, Bezier and B‐splines in combination with the conformal mesh of a finite element model, while implicit method relies upon level‐set functions, that is, implicit functions for B‐rep, and works as an Eulerian approach in combination with the fixed mesh within the scope of extended finite element method or finite cell method. The original contribution of this work is the unification of both methods. First, a new shape optimization method is proposed by combining the features of the parametric and implicit B‐reps. Shape changes of the structural boundary are governed by parametric B‐rep on the fixed mesh to maintain the merit in computer‐aided design modeling and avoid laborious remeshing. Second, analytical shape design sensitivity is formulated for the parametric B‐rep in the framework of fixed mesh of finite cell method by means of the Hamilton–Jacobi equation. Numerical examples are solved to illustrate the unified methodology. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents two immersed finite element (IFE) methods for solving the elliptic interface problem arising from electric field simulation in composite materials. The meshes used in these IFE methods can be independent of the interface geometry and position; therefore, if desired, a structured mesh such as a Cartesian mesh can be used in an IFE method to simulate 3‐D electric field in a domain with non‐trivial interfaces separating different materials. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that the accuracies of these IFE methods are comparable to the standard linear finite element method with unstructured body‐fit mesh. A common mesh refinement‐based coupling technique is embedded into a component mode synthesis method, Craig–Bampton. More specifically, a common mesh is generated between the non‐conforming interfaces of the coupled structures, and the compatibility constraints are enforced on that mesh via L2‐minimization. This new integrated method is suitable for structural dynamic analysis problems where the substructures may have non‐conforming curvilinear and/or surface interface meshes. That is, coupled substructures may have different element types such as shell, solid, and/or beam elements. The proposed method is implemented into a commercial finite element software, B2000++, and its demonstration is carried out using an academic and industry oriented test problems.
