Evaluation of the interaction mechanisms between red muds and heavy metals   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
This paper investigated the heavy metal adsorption of non-treated (RM(nt)) and acid-treated red muds (RM(a)), bauxite ore processing waste, in order to evaluate how efficient they are in reducing metal solubility and bioavaliability in polluted soils. Red mud samples were artificially polluted with solutions containing increasing concentrations of Pb, Cd and Zn. Cancrinite and hematite were the main phases of the red muds, and were also the components which adsorbed most heavy metals. The results showed that the RM(nt) adsorption capacity for the three heavy metals was Zn> or =Pb>Cd. Acid treatment with HCl decreased the red mud's capacity to adsorb the heavy metals by 30%. In order to study the different heavy metal-RM interaction mechanisms, all samples after artificial contamination were treated with solutions with gradually increasing extraction capacity. H(2)O and Ca(NO(3))(2) treatments only extracted very low concentrations of Pb, Cd and Zn, while EDTA treatment extracted the most adsorbed heavy metals from the sorbent particles. In particular the water-soluble and exchangeable metal fractions were higher in the RM(a) than they were in the RM(nt), while the concentrations of Pb, Cd and Zn extracted with EDTA were lower. The results showed that red muds can be used successfully to reduce the solubility and bioavailability of heavy metals in polluted soils.  相似文献

The adsorption process is largely a surface-action phenomenon. In this study, sorption capacities for heavy metals on a solid waste matrix were investigated. Five heavy metals (iron, copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium) were chosen because of their availability in any landfill site. The conditions during all the experimental runs were pH 7.0, temperature 32 degrees C and suppressed microbial degradation. For adsorption isotherm (Freundlich and Langmuir) calculations, fixed quantities of heavy metal ions were mixed with variable quantities of solid waste. The ratio of mass of adsorbate per unit mass of adsorbent was changed five times, by changing only the adsorbent amount. The results showed that the time required to reach equilibrium varied from metal to metal but all reached equilibrium within the first 32 h. The relative potential of sorption of the individual metals and mixed metals on the solid waste matrix is Fe > Zn > Cu > Ni > Cd. The sorption capacity of domestic solid waste matrix for heavy metals is quite significant and this property might prove helpful for the in situ removal of heavy metals in landfill operation.  相似文献

An adsorbent for heavy metals was synthesized by introducing carboxylate functional group into polyacrylamide-grafted hydrous iron(III) oxide. The product exhibits a very high adsorption potential for Pb(II), Hg(II) and Cd(II). The removal of metal ions by adsorption on adsorbent has been found to be contact time, concentration, pH and temperature dependent. The process follows first-order reversible kinetics. The intraparticle diffusion of metal ions through pores in the adsorbent was shown to be the main rate-limiting step. The optimum pH range for the removal of metal ions was found to be 5.0-6.0. The thermodynamic parameters such as free energy change, enthalpy change and entropy change have been calculated to predict the nature of adsorption. The adsorption data were fitted using the Langmuir equation and maximum adsorption for each metal was estimated using their respective Langmuir equation constants. The method was applied for synthetic wastewaters. NaCl regeneration has been tried for several cycles with a view to recover the adsorbed metal ions and also to restore the sorbent to its original state.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria are promising biosorbent for heavy metals in bioremediation. Although sequestration of metals by cyanobacteria is known, the actual mechanisms and ligands involved are not very well understood. The binding characteristics of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by the cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis were investigated using a combination of chemical modifications, batch adsorption experiments, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. A significant increase in Cu(II) and Cd(II) binding was observed in the range of pH 3.5-5.0. Dramatical decrease in adsorption of Cu(II) and Cd(II) was observed after methanol esterification of the nonliving cells demonstrating that carboxyl functional groups play an important role in the binding of metals by S. platensis. The desorption rate of Cu(II) and Cd(II) from S. platensis surface was 72.7-80.7% and 53.7-58.0% by EDTA and NH(4)NO(3), respectively, indicating that ion exchange and complexation are the dominating mechanisms for Cu(II) and Cd(II) adsorption. XAFS analysis provided further evidence on the inner-sphere complexation of Cu by carboxyl ligands and showed that Cu is complexed by two 5-membered chelate rings on S. platensis surface.  相似文献

The study reports removal of heavy metals when present singly or in binary and ternary systems by the milling agrowaste of Cicer arientinum (chickpea var. black gram) as the biosorbent. The biosorbent removed heavy metal ions efficiently from aqueous solutions with the selectivity order of Pb>Cd>Zn>Cu>Ni. The biosorption of metal ions by black gram husk (BGH) increased as the initial metal concentration increased. Biosorption equilibrium was established within 30 min, which was well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The maximum amount of heavy metals (qmax) adsorbed at equilibrium was 49.97, 39.99, 33.81, 25.73 and 19.56 mg/g BGH biomass for Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu and Ni, respectively. The biosorption capacities were found to be pH dependent and the maximum adsorption occurred at the solution pH 5. Efficiency of the biosorbent to remove Pb from binary and ternary solutions with Cd, Cu, Ni and Zn was the same level as it was when present singly. The presence of Pb in the binary and ternary solutions also did not significantly affect the sorption of other metals. Breakthrough curves for continuous removal of Pb from single, binary and ternary metal solutions are reported for inlet-effluent equilibrium. Complete desorption of Pb and other metals in single and multimetal solutions was achieved with 0.1 M HCl in both shake flask and fixed bed column studies. This is the first report of removal of the highly toxic Pb, Cd, and other heavy metals in binary and ternary systems based on the biosorption by an agrowaste. The potential of application for the treatment of solutions containing these heavy metals in multimetal solutions is indicated.  相似文献

Heavy metal cations are the most common group of pollutants which significantly contribute to the pollution of aquatic systems. Among the heavy metal cations, lead, chromium, cadmium and cobalt are the most abundant cations present in wastewaters. In this work, a novel sorbent was synthesized via functionalization of chloro-mesoporous SBA-15 with 2,4- dinitrophenylhydrazine. The adsorbent was identified by various characterization techniques and then was used for adsorption of Pb(II), Cr(III), Cd(II), and Co(II). and then the response surface methodology was employed to study the influence, and interaction of different parameters. According to the results, the optimized adsorption capacity of 242.50, 214.72, 187.86, 166.46 mg/g was obtained respectively for the studied cations. furthermore, the sorption of cations was fast and the process achieve to equilibrium within 23.65, 20.31, 24.05 min for Pb(II), Cr(III), Cd(II) and within 19.88 min for Co(II). The adsorbent regenerated by a mixture of nitric acid and methanol could be recycled without losing a remarkable amount of capacity. The results analyzed with various isotherm models were best conformed to the Langmuir model.  相似文献

This work investigated the utilization of grape bagasse as an alternative natural adsorbent to remove Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions from laboratory effluent. X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analyses, surface analysis, porosity and porous size were used for characterization of the material. Batch experiments were carried out to evaluate the adsorption capacity of the material. Parameters such as adsorption pH and contact time were optimized for the maximum accumulation onto the solid surface. The pH values found were 7 and 3 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively, and contact time was 5 min for both metals. Adsorption capacity for metals were calculated from adsorption isotherms by applying the Langmüir model and found to be 0.774 and 0.428 mmol g(-1) for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The competition between metals for the same adsorption sites on grape bagasse was also evaluated, showing an increasing affinity for Pb(II) over Cd(II) when only these metals are present. The potential of this material was demonstrated by efficient metal removal from laboratory effluent using a glass column. The results indicate that the referred material could be employed as adsorbent for effluent treatment, especially due to its easy acquisition and low cost as well as the fast adsorption involved.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study is the investigation of the adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater with waste activated sludge (WAS) so as to increase the operational flexibility of activated sludge processes for the shock loading problems of heavy metals. By contacting the raw wastewater with WAS, before it entered the activated sludge process unit, some heavy metals in the wastewater were removed, and the pH value of the acidic wastewater rose. Five metals, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd and Pb, were studied, some factors which affected this biosorption phenomena were investigated, and expressions of the adsorption isotherms were discussed. A semi‐empirical mass transfer‐adsorption model was developed to describe the kinetic experimental data.  相似文献

Studies on the utilization of low cost adsorbents for removal of heavy metals from wastewaters are gaining attention. Fired coal fly ash, a solid by-product that is produced in power plants worldwide in million of tonnes, has attracted researchers' interest. In this work, fly ash was shaped into pellets that have diameter in-between 3-8mm, high relative porosity and very good mechanical strength. The pellets were used in adsorption experiments for the removal of copper and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions. The effect of agitation rate, equilibration time, pH of solution and initial metal concentration were studied. The adsorption of both cations follows pseudo-second order kinetics reaching equilibrium after an equilibration time of 72 h. The experimental results for copper and cadmium adsorption fit well to a Langmuirian type isotherm. The calculated adsorption capacities of pellets for copper and cadmium were 20.92 and 18.98 mg/g, respectively. Desorption experiments were performed in several extraction media. The results showed that both metals were desorbed substantially from pellets under acidic solutions. For this reason, metal saturated pellets were encapsulated in concrete blocks synthesized from cement and raw pulverized fly ash in order to avoid metal desorption. The heavy metals immobilization after encapsulation in concrete blocks was tested through desorption tests in several aqueous media. The results showed that after 2 months in acidic media with pH 2.88 and 4.98 neither copper nor cadmium were desorbed thus indicating excellent stabilization of heavy metals in the concrete matrix. As a conclusion, the results showed that fly ash shaped into pellets could be considered as a potential adsorbent for the removal of copper and cadmium from wastewaters. Moreover, the paper proposes an efficient and simple stabilization process of the utilized adsorbents thus guarantying their safe disposal in industrial landfills and eliminating the risk of pollution for groundwater and other natural water receivers.  相似文献

Abstract

The adsorption of heavy metals on soil from the Neihu Landfill Site in Taipei City was investigated in order to assess the ground water pollution problems. The effects of soil organic matter and the behaviors of organic complexing ligands like EDTA and humic acid to the overall adsorption process were studied and discussed. In explaining the results, the pH of soil system and the properties of the soil/aqueous interface were chosen as two significant and interacting factors for discussion. The concept of the specific adsorption mechanism was also demonstrated and discussed. The results showed that the complexing ligands existing in soil liquid phase have more influences than natural organic matter does. The competitive sequences of different organic matter contents indicated that organic functional sites preferentially bind with Cu and Cd. The presence of EDTA and humic acid which formed ligandlike complexes will reduce Cd adsorption efficiency. These effects will induce mobility and the fate of heavy metals in soils, such as bioavailability.  相似文献
