Friction stir welding of titanium holds the promise for producing joints with microstructures and mechanical properties that are more comparable to wrought material than traditional fusion welding processes. Extensive data exist on the microstructure and static mechanical properties of titanium friction stir welds, but very little are available on the durability (fatigue) and even less on the damage tolerance (fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth). This paper presents the results of an investigation into the damage tolerance of friction stir welds made in 6 mm thick Ti‐6Al‐4V after a post‐weld heat treatment. It was found that the apparent fracture toughness was lower than the wrought base material, 7–25% depending on the crack orientation relative to the weld, but the crack growth performance (ΔK vs. da/dN) of the weld in the absence of weld‐induced residual stresses was identical to the base material.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the fracture and fatigue crack growth properties of Ti‐6Al‐4V produced by the Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture (WAAM®) process. First, fracture toughness was measured for two different orientations with respect to the build direction; the effect of wire oxygen content and build strategy were also evaluated in the light of microstructure examination. Second, fatigue crack growth rates were measured for fully additive manufactured samples, as well as for samples containing an interface between WAAM® and wrought materials. The latter category covers five different scenarios of crack location and orientation with respect to the interface. Fatigue crack growth rates are compared with that of the wrought or WAAM® alone conditions. Crack growth trajectory of these tests is discussed in relation to the microstructure characteristics.  相似文献

This paper provides a study on fatigue delamination growth in composite laminates using energy principles. Experimental data has been obtained from fatigue tests conducted on Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) specimens at various stress ratios. A concept of fatigue fracture toughness is proposed to interpret the stress ratio effect in crack growth. The fatigue fracture toughness is demonstrated to be interface configuration independent but significantly stress ratio dependent. An explanation for this phenomenon is given using SEM fractography. Fracture surface roughness is observed to be similar in different interfaces at the same stress ratio. But it is obviously more rough for high stress ratio in comparison with that for low stress ratio, causing the fatigue resistance increase. Therefore, the stress ratio effect in fatigue crack growth can be physically explained by a difference in resistance to crack growth.  相似文献

Load‐controlled three‐point bending fatigue tests were conducted on API X80 pipeline steel to investigate the effects of stress ratio and specimen orientation on the fatigue crack growth behaviour. Because of the high strength and toughness of X80 steel, crack growth rate was measured and plotted versus ΔJ with stress ratio. The fatigue crack length is longer in the transverse direction, whereas the fatigue crack growth rates are nearly the same in different orientations. Finally, a new fatigue crack growth model was proposed. The effective J‐integral range was modified by ΔJp in order to correlate crack closure effect due to large‐scale yield of crack tip. The model was proved to fit well for fatigue crack growth rate of API X80 at various stress ratios of R > 0.  相似文献

It is observed that the short fatigue cracks grow faster than long fatigue cracks at the same nominal driving force and even grow at stress intensity factor range below the threshold value for long cracks in titanium alloy materials. The anomalous behaviours of short cracks have a great influence on the accurate fatigue life prediction of submersible pressure hulls. Based on the unified fatigue life prediction method developed in the authors' group, a modified model for short crack propagation is proposed in this paper. The elastic–plastic behaviour of short cracks in the vicinity of crack tips is considered in the modified model. The model shows that the rate of crack propagation for very short cracks is determined by the range of cyclic stress rather than the range of the stress intensity factor controlling the long crack propagation and the threshold stress intensity factor range of short fatigue cracks is a function of crack length. The proposed model is used to calculate short crack propagation rate of different titanium alloys. The short crack propagation rates of Ti‐6Al‐4V and its corresponding fatigue lives are predicted under different stress ratios and different stress levels. The model is validated by comparing model prediction results with the experimental data.  相似文献

Prediction model for the growth rates of short cracks based on Kmax‐constant tests with M(T) specimens The fatigue crack growth behaviour of short corner cracks in the Aluminium alloys Al 6013‐T6 and Al 2524‐T351 was investigated. The aim was to determine the crack growth rates of small corner cracks at stress ratios of R = 0.1, R = 0.7 and R = 0.8 and to develop a method to predict these crack growth rates from fatigue crack growth curves determined for long cracks. Corner cracks were introduced into short crack specimens, similar to M(T)‐specimens, at one side of a hole (Ø = 4.8 mm) by cyclic compression (R = 20). The pre‐cracks were smaller than 100 μm (notch + precrack). A completely new method was used to cut very small notches (10–50 μm) into the specimens with a Focussed Ion Beam. The results of the fatigue crack growth tests with short corner cracks were compared with long fatigue crack growth test data. The short cracks grew at ΔK‐values below the threshold for long cracks at the same stress ratio. They also grew faster than long cracks at the same ΔK‐values and the same stress ratios. A model was developed on the basis of Kmax‐constant tests with long cracks that gives a good and conservative prediction of the short crack growth rates.  相似文献

The building of Inconel 625 material was carried out using the selective laser melting method, and its fatigue crack growth property at ambient temperature was experimentally investigated. Compact‐tension specimens with different building orientations were utilized to determine the stress intensity factor threshold and fatigue crack growth rate curves at different stress ratios (R). The results indicated that the fatigue crack growth properties in the near threshold stress intensity factor and Paris regions were greatly affected by the loading factor, as well as the orientation of the alloy. The mechanism of fatigue crack growth at different stages was observed and discussed using scanning electron microscopy. Finally, based on the framework of the linear elastic fracture, a new and applicable effective driving force factor range was introduced to replace the traditional stress intensity factor range (ΔK) with good accuracy for all of the fatigue crack growth test data, considering both the stress ratio and orientation.  相似文献

Fatigue crack growth rate properties are typically determined by experimental methods in accordance with ASTM Standard E647. These traditional methods use standard notched specimens that are precracked under cyclic tensile loads before the main test. The data that are produced using this approach have been demonstrated elsewhere to be potentially adversely affected by the test method, particularly in the threshold region where load reduction (LR) methods are also required. Coarse‐grained materials that exhibit rough and tortuous fatigue surfaces have been observed to be strongly affected by the tensile precracking and LR, in part because the anomalies caused by crack closure and roughness‐induced closure become more important. The focus of the work reported in this paper was to further develop methods to determine more accurate fatigue crack growth rate properties from threshold through to fracture for coarse‐grained, β‐annealed, titanium alloy Ti‐6Al‐4V extra low interstitial thick plate material. A particular emphasis was put upon the threshold and near threshold region, which is of strong importance in the overall fatigue life of components. New approaches that differ from the ASTM Standard included compression precracking, LR starting from a lower load level and continuing the test beyond rates where crack growth would otherwise be considered below threshold. For the threshold regime, two LR methods were also investigated: the ASTM method and a method where the load is reduced with crack growth such that the crack mouth opening displacement is held constant, in an attempt to avoid remote closure. Constant amplitude fatigue crack growth rate data were produced from threshold to fracture for the titanium alloy at a variety of stress ratios. Spike overload tests were also conducted These data were then used to develop an improved analytical model to predict crack growth under spectrum loading and the predictions were found to correlate well with test results.  相似文献

Fatigue damage characteristics of aluminium alloy under complex biaxial loads such as in‐phase and out‐of‐phase loading conditions and different biaxiality ratios have been investigated. The effects of microscale phenomena on macroscale crack growth were studied to develop an in‐depth understanding of crack nucleation and growth. Material characterization was conducted to study the microstructure variability. Scanning electron microscopy was used to identify the second phase particles, and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy was performed to analyse their phases and elements. Extensive quasi‐static and fatigue tests were conducted on Al7075‐T651 cruciform specimens over a wide range of load ratios and phases. Detailed fractography analysis was conducted to understand the crack growth behaviour observed during the fatigue tests. Significant differences in crack initiation and propagation behaviour were observed when a phase difference was applied. Primarily, crack retardation and splitting were observed because of the constantly varying mode mixity caused by phase difference. The crack growth behaviour and fatigue lives under out‐of‐phase loading were compared with those under in‐phase loading to understand the effect of mixed‐mode fracture.  相似文献

In this study, friction stir welding of Ti‐6Al‐4 V was demonstrated in 24 mm thickness material. The microstructure and mechanical properties, fatigue, fracture toughness and crack growth of these thick section friction stir welds were evaluated and compared with electron beam welds produced in the same thickness material. It was found that the friction stir welds possessed a relatively coarse lamellar alpha transformed beta microstructure because of slow cooling from above the transus temperature of the material. The electron beam welds had a fine acicular alpha structure as a result of rapid solidification. The friction stir welds possessed better ductility, fatigue life, fracture toughness and crack growth resistance than the base meal or electron beam welds. Thus, even though friction stir welding is a relatively new process, the performance benefits it offers for the fabrication of heavy gage primary structure make it a more attractive option than the more well‐established electron beam welding method.  相似文献

Abstract: The effects of shot‐peening on fretting fatigue crack growth behaviour in titanium alloy, Ti‐6A1‐4V were investigated. Three shot‐peening intensities: 4A, 7A and 10A were considered. The analysis involved the fracture mechanics and finite element sub‐modelling technique to estimate crack propagation lives. These computations were supplemented with the experimentally measured total fretting fatigue lives of laboratory specimens to assess the crack initiation lives. Shot‐peening has significant effect on the initiation/propagation phases of fretting fatigue cracks; however this effect depends upon the shot‐peening intensity. The ratio of crack initiation and total life increased while the ratio of the crack propagation and total life decreased with an increase of shot‐peening intensity. Effects of residual compressive stress from shot‐peening on the crack growth behaviour were also investigated. The fretting fatigue crack propagation component of the total life with relaxation increased in comparison to its counterpart without relaxation in each shot‐peened intensity case while the initiation component decreased. Improvement in the fretting fatigue life from the shot‐peening and also with an increase in the shot‐peening intensity appears to be not always due to increase in the crack initiation resistance from shot‐peened induced residual compressive stress.  相似文献

Currently, in North America, the threshold crack‐growth regime is experimentally defined by using ASTM Standard E647, which has been shown in many cases to exhibit anomalies due to the load‐reduction (LR) test method. The test method has been shown to induce remote closure, which prematurely slows down crack growth and produces an abnormally high threshold. In this paper, the fatigue‐crack growth rate properties in the threshold and near‐threshold regimes for a titanium alloy, Ti‐6Al‐4V (STOA), are determined by using the LR test method and an improved test method. The improved method uses ‘compression–compression’ precracking, as developed by Pippan, Topper and others, to provide fatigue‐crack‐growth rate data under constant‐amplitude loading in the near‐threshold regime, without load‐history effects. Tests were conducted over a wide range in stress ratios (R = 0.1–0.7) on compact C(T) specimens for three different widths (25, 51 and 76 mm). The slitting method was used on 51 mm C(T) specimens to confirm that the material did not contain significant levels of residual stresses from forming and/or machining. A crack‐mouth‐opening‐displacement gage was used to monitor crack growth. Data from the ASTM LR method gave near‐threshold values that were found to be dependent upon the specimen width. However, data from the compression precracking constant amplitude (CPCA) loading method gave near‐threshold data independent of specimen width. A crack‐closure analysis was performed for both the LR and CPCA data, to correlate data at the various stress ratios. The CPCA data correlated well with the effective stress‐intensity factor range against rate relation, whereas the LR data exhibited significant threshold fanning with both stress ratio and specimen width.  相似文献

Fracture and fatigue tests have been performed on micro‐sized specimens for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) or micro system technology (MST) applications. Cantilever beam type specimens with dimensions of 10 × 12 × 50 μm3, approximately 1/1000th the size of ordinary‐sized specimens, were prepared from a Ni–P amorphous thin film by focused ion beam machining. Fatigue crack growth and fracture toughness tests were carried out in air at room temperature, using a mechanical testing machine developed for micro‐sized specimens. In fracture toughness tests, fatigue pre‐cracks were introduced ahead of the notches. Fatigue crack growth resistance curves were obtained from the measurement of striation spacing on the fatigue surface, with closure effects on the fatigue crack growth also being observed for micro‐sized specimens. Once fatigue crack growth occurs, the specimens fail within one thousand cycles. This indicates that the fatigue life of micro‐sized specimens is mainly dominated by a crack initiation process, also suggesting that even a micro‐sized surface flaw may be an initiation site for fatigue cracks which will shorten the fatigue life of micro‐sized specimens. As a result of fracture toughness tests, the values of plane strain fracture toughness, KIC, were not obtained because the criteria of plane strain were not satisfied by this specimen size. As the plane strain requirements are determined by the stress intensity, K, and by the yield stress of the material, it is difficult for micro‐sized specimens to satisfy these requirements. Plane‐stress‐ and plane‐strain‐dominated regions were clearly observed on the fracture surfaces and their sizes were consistent with those estimated by fracture mechanics calculations. This indicates that fracture mechanics is still valid for such micro‐sized specimens. The results obtained in this investigation should be considered when designing actual MEMS/MST devices.  相似文献

The presence of hard alpha (HA) anomalies in titanium alloys represents a significant potential degradation to gas turbine component performance. Although HA defects in titanium alloys are rare, when they are present, they can crack and ultimately result in failure. In static fracture and fatigue test specimens, embedded HA defects had significantly higher fracture strengths than anticipated. The objective of this work was to determine if residual stresses caused by thermal expansion mismatch during material fabrication were the cause of the observed behaviour. The residual stress fields in and around surface and embedded HA particles in Ti–6Al–4V (Ti–6–4) were determined using an elasticity solution and measured coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) data. The calculated stress distributions serve as the foundation for comparisons of the local stress and the fracture strength, the stress intensity factor K and the crack growth threshold ΔKth, with the experimentally determined fatigue lives. The analytical results indicated that CTE‐induced residual stress around HA particles can contribute to the fatigue strength of Ti–6–4 by delaying microcracking of HA anomalies and reducing the driving force (effective ΔK) of the fatigue crack. Based on the analysis results, the differences between the surface and subsurface results as well as the difference between predicted and measured fatigue lives could be largely attributed to the residual stress effects caused by the mismatch of the particle and matrix properties.  相似文献

Fracture Toughness and Fatigue Crack Growth of Cast Irons Fracture toughness, elastic moduli and fatigue crack growth rates in air and in vacuum were measured for 17 different cast irons. The graphite shape in the cast irons varied from flakes to nodules, the matrix varied from ferrite to pearlite to martensite. In the fatigue crack growth rate tests, using fracture mechanics methods, it was observed that the fatigue crack growth rate increases significantly as the cyclic stress intensity range approaches the critical value for stable crack growth. This phenomenon was used to determine the fracture toughness of the cast irons. Such toughness data agree well with literature data on the fracture toughness of cast irons. An extensive review of the effects of strength on the fracture toughness of commercial cast irons is presented. In cast irons with flake graphite, cyclic loading results in a reduced modulus of elasticity. This is attributed to the rupture of the graphite flakes under cyclic loading.  相似文献

High cycle fatigue properties of 2124 aluminum alloy plates with different thickness were investigated by determining fatigue S?N curves, fatigue crack growth rates and fracture toughness of 2124‐T851 aluminum alloy plates with the thickness of 30 mm, 40 mm and 55 mm, respectively. Fatigue fracture behaviors of alloy plates were also analyzed and discussed using scanning electron microscope morphology observation, energy spectrum analysis, X‐ray diffraction phase analysis and transmission electron microscopy observation in this paper. The results indicate that plate thickness affects the comprehensive fatigue properties of 2124 aluminum alloy plates. Thinner plate achieves better comprehensive fatigue properties. Due to the different amount of deformation during hot rolling, the variation of microstructure of alloy plates with different thickness mainly concentrates on the difference of grain sizes, substructure and volume fraction of grain boundaries. The thinner the plate, the smaller the grain sizes and therefore the thinner plate produces a higher volume fraction of grain boundaries and substructure, and a greater resistance to fatigue crack growth, thus thinner plate exhibits better fatigue properties.  相似文献

This work investigates the effect of adding gentamicin, an antibiotic, on the fracture properties of bone cement. Endurance limit, fatigue crack propagation and fracture toughness were determined for a polymethylmethacrylate‐based cement, containing 10% w/w of barium sulphate as radiopacifying agent, and the same formulation modified by the addition of 4.22% w/w of gentamicin sulphate. The antibiotic does not affect the endurance limit nor the fracture toughness of the material. There are significant differences in the parameters of the Paris' law fitting the crack growth data: once the main crack is nucleated, it initially propagates at a lower rate but thereafter accelerates faster in gentamicin loaded bone cement. Despite this difference, the growth rate for the same stress intensity factor remains of the same order of magnitude in both formulations. The addition of 4.22% w/w of gentamicin sulphate to radiopaque bone cement has a negligible total effect on the fracture properties of the material.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of fatigue crack growth and fatigue fracture toughness studies of a high-pressure vessel steel with particular emphasis on the influence of heat treatment, low temperatures, plastic prestraining, the stress ratio and specimen dimensions. It has been shown that steels in an embrittled state, caused primarily by thermal treatment and low-temperatures, exhibit unstable fatigue crack growth which is characterized by alternate crack jumps (cleavage zones) and zones of fatigue crack growth. The fatigue fracture toughness, which corresponds to the first crack jump, and final fracture can be appreciably lower (i.e. up to 50%) than the static fracture toughness under plane strain conditions at the corresponding temperature. An analysis has been performed of unstable and stable fatigue crack growth and a model of unstable crack propagation is proposed which accounts for the observed experimental behaviour.  相似文献
