Latent heat thermal energy storage systems can be used to recover the rejected heat from air conditioning systems, which can be used to generate low-temperature hot water. It decreases not only the consumption of primary energy for heating domestic hot water but also the calefaction to the surroundings due to the rejection of heat from air conditioning systems. A recovery system using phase change materials (PCMs) to store the rejected (sensible and condensation) heat from air conditioning system has been developed and studied, making up the shortage of other sensible heat storage system. Also, PCMs compliant for heat recovery of air conditioning system should be developed. Technical grade paraffin wax has been discussed in this paper in order to develop a paraffin wax based PCM for the recovery of rejected heat from air conditioning systems. The thermal properties of technical grade paraffin wax and the mixtures of paraffin wax with lauric acid and with liquid paraffin (paraffin oil) are investigated and discussed, including volume expansion during the phase change process, the freezing point and the heat of fusion.  相似文献

Solar air conditioning is an important approach to satisfy the high demand for cooling given the global energy situation. The application of phase-change materials (PCMs) in a thermal storage system is a way to address temporary power problems of solar air-conditioning systems. This paper reviews the selection, strengthening, and application of PCMs and containers in latent thermal storage system for solar air-conditioning systems. The optimization of PCM container geometry is summarized and analyzed. The hybrid enhancement methods for PCMs and containers and the cost assessment of latent thermal storage system are discussed. The more effective heat transfer enhancement using PCMs was found to mainly involve micro-nano additives. Combinations of fins and nanoadditives, nanoparticles, and metal foam are the main hybrid strengthening method. However, the thermal storage effect of hybrid strengthening is not necessarily better than single strengthening. At the same time, the latent thermal storage unit has less application in the field of solar air-conditioning systems, especially regarding heat recovery, because of its cost and thermal storage time. The integration of latent thermal storage units and solar air-conditioning components, economic analysis of improvement technology, and quantitative studies on hybrid improvement are potential research directions in the future.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using phase change material (PCM) have been recognized as one of advanced energy technologies in enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. The use of PCMs in buildings provides the potential for a better indoor thermal comfort for occupants due to the reduced indoor temperature fluctuations, and lower global energy consumption due to the load reduction/shifting. A good knowledge on dynamic characteristics and energy performance of buildings using PCMs is essential for building researchers and practitioners to better understand building temperature response characteristics and economic feasibility of using PCMs and take further proper actions to fully utilize PCMs to enhance indoor environmental quality and overall energy efficiency of buildings. This paper presents an overview of the previous research work on dynamic characteristics and energy performance of buildings due to the integration of PCMs. The research work on dynamic characteristics and energy performance of active and passive building applications is reviewed, respectively. Since the particular interest in using PCMs for free cooling and peak load shifting, the specific research efforts on both subjects are reviewed separately. A few useful conclusive remarks and recommendations for future work are presented.  相似文献

Phase change materials (PCMs) have found considerable applications in large air conditioning schemes. PCMs were primarily used to introduce capacitance within a system, which enabled them to take into account the fluctuations in the daily cooling load. However, this technology has been developed recently and integrated into the refrigeration system directly to save energy and for better control. This has been achieved through lowering the temperature of the sub-cooled refrigerant and stabilizing the superheat. A prototype demonstrating this novel use of PCMs in refrigeration systems has been developed and tested. Results show that by lowering the temperature of the sub-cooled refrigerant, up to 8% energy savings can be achieved in the UK climate conditions. By using the PCM heat exchanger as a pre-condenser in a refrigeration system, the system’s COP can be improved by 6%. The benefit achieved by reducing the superheat is somewhat offset by its extra pressure drop, although simulation work has showed elsewhere [F. Wang, The passive use of phase change materials in refrigeration system, Ph.D. thesis, London South Bank University, 2003] that the COP can be improved by 4% using a low pressure drop PCM heat exchanger in any climate zone.  相似文献

Latent heat thermal energy storage refers to the storage and recovery of the latent heat during the melting/solidification process of a phase change material (PCM). Among various PCMs, medium‐ and high‐temperature candidates are attractive due to their high energy storage densities and the potentials in achieving high round trip efficiency. Although a few review studies on high‐temperature PCMs have emerged in the past few years, the quantity, completeness, and accuracy of the presented data are relatively poor. Also, an efficient indexing methodology for retrieving useful PCM data is missing in the open literature. In this article, we created an up‐to‐date PCM database following a holistic review of the PCMs in medium‐ and high‐temperature applications over a temperature range of 100°C to 1680°C. Such effort then allows us to develop an accurate indexing tool for the fast selection of suitable PCM candidates and extraction of the related property data. More specifically, the created PCM database covers 496 entries of PCM materials, which are extracted from the scattered research works published during the year 1956 to 2017. The collected information includes both the basic thermo‐physical properties of PCMs (eg, melting temperature, heat of fusion, and thermal conductivity) and crucial design factors during construction and engineering phases (eg, energy storage density, volume expansion, liquid/solid densities, and cost). The reviewed PCMs comprise a wide variety of materials, including fluorides, chlorides, hydrates, nitrates, carbonates, metals and alloys, and other uncommon compounds and salts. In addition, the current work presents a brief review on high‐temperature latent heat thermal energy storage systems categorized into metallic and non‐metallic systems. The corrosivity and stability of PCMs, which are commonly ignored in previous studies, are also examined.  相似文献

A phase-change energy storage system consisting of sections of different materials with different melting temperatures is proposed for air conditioning applications. The Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are placed in thin flat containers and air is passed through gaps between them. A semi-analytical model has been developed and calculations carried out using the finite elements method. Results obtained from three models with different assumptions are compared. The effect of the design parameters such as, PCM slab thickness and fluid passage gap on the storage performance is also investigated. The system is being developed for energy storage in solar heating and energy efficient space heating and cooling applications.  相似文献

The multi-stage phase change material (PCM) fillings were proposed in the methanol steam reforming tube reactor driven by the parabolic-trough concentrated solar energy. Two-dimensional mathematical model of such surround filling reactor with numerical simulation was developed to evaluate its performance on eliminating the solar energy fluctuation. The effects of PCM with different thermophysical properties on chemical performance of the reactor were conducted when the sun is blocked. The optimal arrangement of multiple-stage PCMs was investigated and its performance under solar radiation fluctuations was investigated to improve the available latent heat of PCM and chemical performance of the reactor. The results showed that the PCM filling in the reactor significantly increased the time of methanol reforming reaction and improved the chemical performance when the heating by concentrated solar energy was ceased. PCM with lower phase change temperature and more latent heat could maintain the chemical reaction for a longer time. However, better chemical performance when PCM released latent heat could be achieved by PCM with higher phase change temperature. Compared to single PCM filling, Two-stage PCMs reached a maximum relative improvement in methanol conversion of 10.86%. Three-stage PCMs reached the maximum relative enhancement in methanol conversion of 11.36% compared to Two-stage PCMs. Under the cyclic and solar fluctuations, the multiple-stage PCMs reactor produced nearly twice as much hydrogen as that of the reactor without PCM. During a 6-h real solar radiation fluctuation, the multiple-stage PCMs reactor also have better methanol conversion. However, more than Three-stage PCMs arrangement improved the chemical performance of reactor only slightly.  相似文献

In this paper, a mathematical model of shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) unit of two-dimension of three phase change materials (PCMs) named PCM1, PCM2 and PCM3 with different high melting temperatures (983 K, 823 K and 670 K, respectively) and heat transfer fluid (HTF: air) with flowing resistance and viscous dissipation based on the enthalpy method has been developed. Instantaneous solid–liquid interface positions and liquid fractions of PCMs as well as the effects of inlet temperatures of the air and lengths of the shell-and-tube LHTES unit on melting times of PCMs were numerically analyzed. The results show that melting rates of PCM3 are the fastest and that of PCM1 are the slowest both x, r directions. It is also found that the melting times of PCM1, PCM2 and PCM3 decrease with increase in inlet temperatures of the air. Moreover, with increase in inlet temperatures of the air, decreasing degree of their melting times are different, decreasing degree of the melting time of PCM1 is the biggest and that of PCM3 is the smallest. Considering actual application of solar thermal power, we suggest that the optimum lengths are L1 = 250 mm, L2 = 400 mm, L3 = 550 mm (L = 1200 mm) which corresponds to the same melting times of PCM1, PCM2 and PCM3 are about 3230 s and inlet temperature of the air is about 1200 K. The present analysis provides theoretical guidance for designing optimization of the shell-and-tube LHTES unit with three PCMs for solar thermal power.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage is very important to eradicate the discrepancy between energy supply and energy demand and to improve the energy efficiency of solar energy systems. Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) is more useful than sensible energy storage due to the high storage capacity per unit volume/mass at nearly constant temperatures. This review presents the previous works on thermal energy storage used for air conditioning systems and the application of phase change materials (PCMs) in different parts of the air conditioning networks, air distribution network, chilled water network, microencapsulated slurries, thermal power and heat rejection of the absorption cooling. Recently, researchers studied the heat transfer enhancement of the thermal energy storage with PCMs because most phase change materials have low thermal conductivity, which causes a long time for charging and discharging process. It is expected that the design of latent heat thermal energy storage will reduce the cost and the volume of air conditioning systems and networks.  相似文献

The thermal and optical performances of a roof in a building containing phase change material (PCM) were investigated in this paper. The glazing roof model consists of two layers of glass and one layer of PCM. The purpose of filling the roof structure with PCM is to utilize the solar energy efficiently. The effectiveness of thermal and optical performances of the roof PCM system was determined by analyzing the heat flux and temperature at the indoor surface with different absorption coefficients and refractive index of PCM in solid and liquid states. The results show that the absorption coefficients and refractive index of solid and liquid PCMs have both effects on thermal performance in the roof PCM system. Of all the thermal performances, the effect on internal temperature, temperature lag, and total transmitted energy is smaller and the effect on solar transmittance and transmitted solar energy is bigger. The absorption coefficients have the opposite effect with the refractive index on interior temperature lag. Considering the indoor daylight, increasing the refractive index and absorption coefficient of liquid PCM is a better method to better the thermal performance of a roof PCM system. The shortage in energy resources combined with the climb in greenhouse emissions is the main incentive beyond the deployment of solar energy resource in various applications. One of the most successful applications is the utilization of solar energy in the domestic water heating systems (DWHS) because 70% of the consumed energy in the residential segment is utilized for space heating and appliances in cold climates 1 . However, the full deployment of solar energy in domestic water heating is only possible when an energy storage system with acceptable price is available. Recently a new tendency for deploying phase change materials (PCMs) as an energy storage system is introduced in several solar DWHS. These systems are known as integrated PCM in solar DWHS and offer several advantages including high storage capacity, low storage volume, and isothermal operation during the charging and discharging phases. The present study reviews various techniques utilized for integrating the PCM in solar water heating systems and the utilized methods for enhancing the heat transfer characteristics of the PCM through the usage of extended surfaces and high conductive additives. This paper reports the numerical investigation of the effect of different phase change materials (PCMs) on the metal hydride (MH) behaviour in a reactor bed during the absorption process. The feasibility of integrating metal foams (MFs) into the phase change materials to improve the hydrogen storage performance of the system was also evaluated. A two-dimensional model for a LaNi5 hydride reactor equipped with different phase change materials has been developed. The selection of five different PCMs having a high latent heat of fusion and a range of melting temperatures were investigated. In addition, the effect of the mass and volume of the different PCMs on the hydrogen performance of the MH reactor was studied. It was found that LiNO3·3H2O PCM shown better performance than the other PCMs, its loading time is faster, and its mass within the reactor is enough to absorb the total heat generated from the MH during hydrogenation. Three different metals foam with three different porosities were integrated into the most suitable PCM with the appropriate dimension of a cylindrical reactor that shows the optimum performance. The obtained results indicated that the integration of the metal foams into the PCM show better heat transfer performance than the case of MH-PCM without metal foams. Two different configurations cylindrical and spherical MH reactors were investigated. The obtained results indicated that the two configurations have very similar behaviours. So, both configurations are good for the hydriding process within an MH reactor.  相似文献

This study investigates the thermal energy potentials and economic feasibility of an air-conditioned family household-integrated phase change material (PCM) considering different climate zones in Morocco. A simulation-based optimisation was carried out in order to define the optimal design of a PCM-enhanced household envelope for thermal energy effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of predefined candidate solutions. The optimisation methodology is based on coupling Energyplus® as a dynamic simulation tool and GenOpt® as an optimisation tool. Considering the obtained optimum design strategies, a thermal energy and economic analysis are carried out to investigate PCMs’ integration feasibility in the Moroccan constructions. The results show that the PCM-integrated household envelope allows minimising the cooling/heating thermal energy demand vs. a reference household without PCM. While for the cost-effectiveness optimisation, it has been deduced that the economic feasibility is stilling insufficient under the actual PCM market conditions. The optimal design parameters results are also analysed.  相似文献

The investigation of the use of phase change materials (PCM) in the building sector has become a significant issue and a field exhibiting significant potential in terms of research and development. The present study evaluates the integration of PCMs in office buildings on the basis of their economic and environmental performance by means of life cycle analysis (LCA) in conjunction with life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) respectively. This study is based on a previous building envelope multiobjective optimization study which considers cooling load requirements and thermal comfort conditions as optimization objectives. Specifically, this work moves 1 step further to evaluate the optimal results obtained from the above‐mentioned optimization study based on economic and environmental aspects. This paper attempts to evaluate and quantify the environmental and economic potential of PCM use in office buildings in a generic way. In detail, the present study starts by examining whether reducing the extent of the environmental impact achieved during the operational phase from energy savings offsets the respective increase arising from the PCM production. The LCA results reveal that the overall life cycle impact of the 2 office units examined is reduced, despite the respective impact of the construction stage increasing significantly, given the high proportion of impact accruing from the energy use stage in the overall impact. Finally, a life cycle cost evaluation assesses the viability of such applications, with the conclusion that the energy saving achieved during the use stage in both office units is insufficient to compensate for the LCC increase induced by the high cost of construction.  相似文献

Fatty acids such as stearic acid (SA), palmitic acid (PA), myristic acid (MA), and lauric acid (LA) are promising phase change materials (PCMs) for latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) applications, but high cost is the most drawback which limits the utility area of them in thermal energy storage. The use of fatty acids as form-stable PCM will increase their feasibilities in practical LHTES applications due to reduced cost of the energy storage system. In this regard, a series of fatty acid/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends, SA/PMMA, PA/PMMA, MA/PMMA, and LA/PMMA were prepared as new kinds of form-stable PCMs by encapsulation of fatty acids into PMMA which acts as supporting material. The blends were prepared at different mass fractions of fatty acids (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% w/w) to reach maximum encapsulation ratio. All blends were subjected to leakage test by heating the blends over the melting temperature of the PCM. The blends that do not allow leakage of melted PCM were identified as form-stable PCMs. The form-stable fatty acid/PMMA (80/20 wt.%) blends were characterized using optic microscopy (OM), viscosimetry, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy methods, and the results showed that the PMMA was compatible with the fatty acids. In addition, thermal characteristics such as melting and freezing temperatures and latent heats of the form-stable PCMs were measured by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique and indicated that they had good thermal properties. On the basis of all results, it was concluded that form-stable fatty acid/PMMA blends had important potential for some practical LHTES applications such as under floor space heating of buildings and passive solar space heating of buildings by using wallboard, plasterboard or floor impregnated with a form-stable PCM due to their satisfying thermal properties, easily preparing in desired dimensions, direct usability without needing an add encapsulation and eliminating the thermal resistance caused by shell and thus reducing cost of LHTES system.  相似文献

A mathematical model for the overall exergetic efficiency of two phase change materials named PCM1 and PCM2 storage system with a concentrating collector for solar thermal power based on finite-time thermodynamics is developed. The model takes into consideration the effects of melting temperatures and number of heat transfer unit of PCM1 and PCM2 on the overall exergetic efficiency. The analysis is based on a lumped model for the PCMs which assumes that a PCM is a thermal reservoir with a constant temperature of its melting point and a distributed model for the air which assumes that the temperature of the air varies in its flow path. The results show that the overall exergetic efficiency can be improved by 19.0-53.8% using two PCMs compared with a single PCM. It is found that melting temperatures of PCM1 and PCM2 have different influences on the overall exergetic efficiency, and the overall exergetic efficiency decreases with increasing the melting temperature of PCM1, increases with increasing the melting temperature of PCM2. It is also found that for PCM1, increasing its number of heat transfer unit can increase the overall exergetic efficiency, however, for PCM2, only when the melting temperature of PCM1 is less than 1150 K and the melting temperature of PCM2 is more than 750 K, increasing the number of heat transfer unit of PCM2 can increase the overall exergetic efficiency. Considering actual application of solar thermal power, we suggest that the optimum melting temperature range of PCM1 is 1000-1150 K and that of PCM2 is 750-900 K. The present analysis provides theoretical guidance for applications of two PCMs storage system for solar thermal power.  相似文献

Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPVs) is one of the most promising applications for Photovoltaics (PVs). However, when the temperature in the BIPV increases, the conversion efficiency deteriorates. A PV/PCM system using Phase Change Materials (PCM) for BIPV thermal control has been experimentally and numerically studied previously. One of the main barriers for this application is how to improve the low thermal conductivity of the PCM in order to achieve a quick thermal dissipation response with longer thermal regulation in PVs. Although the metal fins inserted inside the PCM can improve the heat transfer, the thermal regulation period declines as the volume of the PCM is substituted by the metal mass of the PV/PCM system. A modified PV/PCM system integrated with two PCMs with different phase transient temperatures for improving the heat regulation needs to be investigated. The use of combinations of PCMs, each with a set of different phase transient temperatures, is expected to enhance the thermal regulation effect of the PV/PCM system and lengthen the thermal regulation time in PVs. In this study a developed PV/PCM numerical simulation model for single PCM application has been modified to predict the thermal performance of the multi-PCMs in a triangular cell in the PV/PCM system. A series of numerical simulations tests have been carried out in static state and realistic conditions in UK. The thermal regulation of the PV/PCM system with a different range of phase transient temperature PCMs has been discussed.  相似文献

The time mismatch between energy availability and energy demand with solar domestic hot water (SDHW) systems is often solved using energy storage. Energy storage systems typically employ water for thermal energy storage, however, water storage takes up considerable space and weight due to the large volumes required under certain conditions. A latent heat energy storage system (LHESS) may provide a valuable solution to the space and weight issue, while also correcting the energy mismatch by storing energy in phase change materials (PCMs) when it is available, dispensing energy when it is in demand, and acting as a heat exchanger when there is supply and demand simultaneously. PCMs are advantageous as energy storage materials due to their high energy density which reduces the space requirements for energy storage. However, heat transfer problems arise due to the inherently low thermal conductivity of PCMs. Simultaneous charging and discharging has not been addressed in literature making questionable the ability of a LHESS to operate as a heat exchanger during the mode of operation. The main objective of this research is to study the heat transfer processes and phase change behavior of a PCM during simultaneous charging and discharging of a LHESS.In Part 2 of this paper, experiments are performed using a vertical cylindrical LHESS which is charged and discharged simultaneously to replicate latent heat energy storage paired with a SDHW system with simultaneous energy supply and demand. Dodecanoic acid is used as the PCM. Experimental results for simultaneous operations are presented, under various scenarios and flow rates for both the hot and cold heat transfer fluids. The ability of the system to directly transfer heat between the hot and cold heat transfer fluids is studied, and the results found during consecutive, or separate, charging and discharging, presented in Part 1 of this paper, are compared to the results found during simultaneous charging and discharging. It was found that natural convection in the melted PCM clearly provides an advantage towards direct heat exchange between the hot and cold heat transfer fluid; while the low thermal conductivity of solid PCM provides a barrier to this direct energy exchange.  相似文献

In this paper the experimental investigation on the solid/liquid phase change (melting and solidification) processes have been carried out. Paraffin wax RT58 is used as phase change material (PCM), in which metal foams are embedded to enhance the heat transfer. During the melting process, the test samples are electrically heated on the bottom surface with a constant heat flux. The PCM with metal foams has been heated from the solid state to the pure liquid phase. The temperature differences between the heated wall and PCM have been analysed to examine the effects of heat flux and metal foam structure (pore size and relative density). Compared to the results of the pure PCM sample, the effect of metal foam on solid/liquid phase change heat transfer is very significant, particularly at the solid zone of PCMs. When the PCM starts melting, natural convection can improve the heat transfer performance, thereby reducing the temperature difference between the wall and PCM. The addition of metal foam can increase the overall heat transfer rate by 3-10 times (depending on the metal foam structures and materials) during the melting process (two-phase zone) and the pure liquid zone. The tests for investigating the solidification process under different cooling conditions (e.g. natural convection and forced convection) have been carried out. The results show that the use of metal foams can make the sample solidified much faster than pure PCM samples, evidenced by the solidification time being reduced by more than half. In addition, a two-dimensional numerical analysis has been carried out for heat transfer enhancement in PCMs by using metal foams, and the prediction results agree reasonably well with the experimental data.  相似文献
