The Wankel rotary engine is a potential alternative to the reciprocating engine in hybrid applications because of its favorable energy to weight ratio. In this study, a Wankel rotary engine was modified to run on a hydrogen–gasoline blend. Hydrogen enrichment improved the performance of a lean-burn spark-ignition rotary engine operating at high speed and wide open throttle conditions with the original ignition timing, using 0%, %2, 4%, 5%, 7%, and 10% hydrogen energy fractions at the intake. The experimental results showed that adding hydrogen to gasoline in the engine improved the thermal efficiency and the power output. Hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions were reduced while nitrogen oxide emissions increased with the increase of hydrogen fraction.  相似文献

Hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine is proposed to resist the threat of global warming. Wankel rotary engine (WRE) has been proven to be an excellent hydrogen-fueled power device, which can overcome the shortcomings of hydrogen, such as poor power, serious backfire and large storage volume, to some extent when it is used as fuel in the internal combustion engine. However, due to its unique structure, WRE suffers from severe knock. Therefore, the goal of this work is to investigate the impacts of knock type on the heat release process in hydrogen-fueled WRE. This present work is conducted at 2000 r/min and wide-open throttle. The main results are as follows: In hydrogen-fueled WRE, the peak knock pressure of knock caused by rapid and unstable combustion of hydrogen is usually earlier than CA50 and that of knock caused by spontaneous combustion of end gas is usually later than CA50. The sequence between the crank angle of peak knock pressure and CA50 combined with knock intensity can be used to determine the knock type in hydrogen-fueled WRE. Besides, a means for knock detection is proposed according to the distribution of crank angle corresponding to peak knock pressure. In addition, the distribution of CA0-10, CA50 and CA10-90 of 1000 consecutive cycles under two kinds of knock in hydrogen-fueled WRE are discussed in detail, and regular conclusions are drawn. In particular, the limitation of CA50 as a metric for evaluating knock level is also demonstrated.  相似文献

In this experimental study, hydrogen was inducted along with air and diesel was injected into the cylinder using a high pressure common rail system, in a single cylinder homogeneous charge compression ignition engine. An electronic controller was used to set the required injection timing of diesel for best thermal efficiency. The influences of hydrogen to diesel energy ratio, output of the engine and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on performance, emissions and combustion were studied in detail. An increase in the amount of hydrogen improved the thermal efficiency by retarding the combustion process. It also lowered the exhaust emissions. Large amounts of hydrogen and EGR were needed at high outputs for suppressing knock. The range of operation was brake mean effective pressures of 2–4 bar. The levels of HC and CO emitted were not significantly influenced by the amount of hydrogen that was used.  相似文献

The distinctive properties of hydrogen have initiated considerable applied research related to the internal combustion engine. Recently, it has been reported that NOx emissions were reduced by using hydrogen in a diesel engine at low temperature and heavy EGR conditions. As the continuing study, cylinder pressure was also investigated to determine the combustion characteristics and their relationship to NOx emissions. The test engine was operated at constant speed and fixed diesel fuel injection rate (1500 rpm, 2.5 kg/h). Diesel fuel was injected in a split pattern into a 2-L diesel engine. The cylinder pressure was measured for different hydrogen flow rates and EGR ratios. The intake manifold temperature was controlled to be the same to avoid the gas intake temperature variations under the widely differing levels (2%-31%) of EGR. The measured cylinder pressure was analyzed for characteristic combustion values, such as mass burn fraction and combustion duration. The rising crank angle of the heat release rate was unaffected by the presence of hydrogen. However, supplying hydrogen extended the main combustion duration. This longer main combustion duration was particularly noticeable at the heavy EGR condition. It correlated well with the reduced NOx emissions.  相似文献

Low flame speed restrains engine efficiency and increases HC emissions in rotary engines. Hydrogen addition and turbulent jet ignition have a great potential in increasing engine performance as they increase fuel burning speed. In this study, the classical R13b-Renesis Wankel engine and a modified one with a turbulent jet ignition configuration are numerically investigated by using hydrogen as a supplement. Eccentric motion of the rotor was generated by using User Defined Function in ANSYS-Fluent software. Pure methane and methane blended with 3% and 6% hydrogen energy fractions were used as fuels in the calculations. Combustion was modeled by using reduced mechanism of hydrogen-methane combustion having 22 species and 104 reactions. The Wankel engine was simulated at 2000 rpm speed and partial load conditions. At first, classical engine configuration having two spark plugs was simulated with pure methane. Then, hydrogen blended methane simulations were conducted to investigate the benefits of the hydrogen addition. Similar procedure was applied for the turbulent jet ignition application. The results show that both approaches are effective on increasing the burning speed of the fuel. It is revealed that hydrogen addition increases the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) by 1.8% and 5.2% for 3% and 6% hydrogen fraction cases respectively in the classical engine. Turbulent jet ignition with pure methane increases IMEP by 4.7% compared to the classical engine. Hydrogen addition only in pre-chamber is effective as much as 6% hydrogen fraction of classical engine. As the burning speed is increased by the application of these methods, CO and HC emissions are reduced and NO emission is increased. It is concluded that benefits of hydrogen addition and turbulent jet ignition applications can be optimized for both reducing harmful emissions and increasing engine performance.  相似文献

The effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on combustion and emissions under different hydrogen ratios were studied based on an engine with a gasoline intake port injection and hydrogen direct injection. The peak cylinder pressure increases by 9.8% in the presence of a small amount of hydrogen. The heat release from combustion is more concentrated, and the engine torque can increase by 11% with a small amount of hydrogen addition. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions can be reduced by EGR dilution. Hydrogen addition offsets the blocking effect of EGR on combustion partially, therefore, hydrogen addition permits a higher original engine EGR rate, and yields a larger throttle opening, which improves the mechanical efficiency and decreases NOx emissions by 54.8% compared with the original engine. The effects of EGR on carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions are not obvious and CO and HC emissions can be reduced sharply with hydrogen addition. CO, HC, and NOx emissions can be controlled at a lower level, engine output torque can be increased, and fuel consumption can be reduced significantly with the co-control of hydrogen addition and EGR in a hydrogen gasoline engine.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of hydrogen addition on RCCI combustion of an engine running on landfill gas and diesel oil. A single cylinder heavy– duty diesel engine is set in operation at 9.4 bar IMEP. A certain amount of diesel fuel per cycle is fed into the engine and hydrogen is added to landfill gas while keeping fixed fuel energy content. The developed simulation results confirm that hydrogen addition which is the most environmental friendly fuel causes the fuel consumption per any cycle to reduce. Also, the peak pressure is increased while the engine load is reduced up to 4%. Landfill gas which is enriched with hydrogen improves the rate of methane dissociation and reduces the combustion duration at the same time the engine operation would not be exposed to diesel knock. Moreover, hydrogen addition to landfill gas would reduce engine emissions considerably.  相似文献

Natural gas/hydrogen blends (NGHB) fuel is considered as one of the ideal alternative fuels for the rotary engine (RE), which can effectively reduce the carbon emissions of RE. Additionally, applying turbulent jet ignition (TJI) mode to RE can significantly increase the combustion rate. The purpose of this study is to numerically investigate the influence of hydrogen injection position (HIP) and hydrogen injection timing (HIT) on the in-cylinder mixture formation, flame propagation and NOx emission of a TJI hydrogen direct injection plus natural gas port injection RE. Therefore, in this paper, a test bench and a 3D dynamic simulation model of the turbulent jet ignition rotary engine (TJI-RE) fueled with NGHB were respectively established. Moreover, the reliability of the 3D simulation model was verified by experimental data. Furthermore, based on the established 3D model, the fuel distribution and flame propagation in the cylinder under different HIPs and HITs were calculated. The results indicated that the HIP and HIT could change the hydrogen distribution by altering the impact position, impact angle, and the strength of vortexes in the cylinder. To improve the flame propagation speed, more hydrogen should be distributed in the pre-chamber. Additionally, a higher concentration of hydrogen in the cylinder should be maintained above the jet orifice. This was not only conducive to the rapid formation of the initial fire core in the pre-chamber, but also significantly improved the combustion rate of the in-cylinder mixture. Compared with other hydrogen injection strategies, the hydrogen injection strategy by using the HIP at the middle of the cylinder block and the HIT of 190oCA(BTDC) could obtained the highest peak value of in-cylinder pressure and the highest NOx emission.  相似文献

Hydrogen energy is gaining greater attention because of the energy crisis and CO2 emissions, and knock combustion has become the main obstacle to improving thermal efficiency and power performance of hydrogen engines, which is an important method of hydrogen energy application. In this paper, the knock characteristic parameters and the factors affecting knock tendency of a 2.0 L DI hydrogen engine are investigated experimentally. The results reveal the variation in knock intensity is not linear with the retarding of SOI, which is related to the cylinder mixture distribution. Furthermore, methods such as increasing injection pressures can be useful in reducing the knock intensity. Equivalence ratio has a greater impact on knock compared with other parameters. The conclusions can be used in the further exploration of the knock combustion mechanism in DI hydrogen engines.  相似文献

Water direct injection into the cylinder is one of effective ways to suppress the combustion rate and knocking combustion in turbocharged SI engine. In this study, a detailed one-dimensional model coupled with the water direct injection was built by using the GT-Power according to the real tested hydrogen-enriched lean-burn natural gas (NG) SI engine, and validated against the experimental data. Then, a series of cases with various water injection quantity and injection timing were comprehensively investigated on the thermodynamics, combustion and emissions characteristics of the NGSI engine. The impact of the thermo-physical of the water were discussed in detailed by sweeping various water injection quantity and water injection timing. The results indicated that peak combustion pressure and peak heat release rate decreased with the increasing the water injection quantity. In addition, the 50% combustion location and peak combustion pressure location were retarded with the increasing the water injection quantity. As for the water injection timing, the peak combustion pressure and peak combustion temperature were slightly decreased with retarding the water injection timing. Apart from that, the indicated thermal efficiency decreased 4.03% and the equivalent fuel consumption increased 3.56% with injecting 60 mg water into the cylinder compared the case without water injection. Furthermore, the indicated thermal efficiency decreased 4.68% and the equivalent fuel consumption increased 4.66% by sweeping the water injection timing from the 150 CA to 50 CA before top dead center. However, the volumetric efficiency slightly ascended with increasing the water injection quantity and retarding the water injection timing. Finally, the NOx emissions declined with increasing the water injection quantity and retarding the water injection timing. However, CO emission and unburned HC emissions increased with increasing the water injection quantity and retarding the water injection timing. The main aim of this paper is expected to provide a comprehensively assessment of the thermo-physical of water on the thermodynamics, combustion, and emissions of the hydrogen enriched NGSI engine.  相似文献

Linear hydrogen engine is a new type of energy conversion device to supports variable compression ratio operation for clean emission. However, the new hydrogen engine using conventional spark ignition shows slow combustion speed and low thermal efficiency. This study makes a preliminary assessment to discuss the application of diesel pilot-ignition technology in linear hydrogen engine aiming to accelerate combustion and improve efficiency. A new coupling model between dynamics and thermodynamics is proposed and then iteratively calculated to give insight the interrelationship of combustion and motion in a diesel pilot-ignited linear hydrogen engine, while the effect of injection position on the hydrogen engine combustion is also investigated to make clear the feasibility of combustion optimization. The results indicate that the linear hydrogen engine is speeded by properly advancing the injection to promote combustion, and it has a positive effect on in-cylinder gas temperature, pressure and pressure rise rate, unless the injection is too early which results in higher NO emissions and aggravate the working intensity of the engine. In addition, the closer the fuel injection is to the top dead center, the incomplete combustion of hydrogen and diesel in the cylinder, the decrease of engine fuel economy and the increase of soot emissions. There is an optimal thermal efficiency of 40.7% for the LHE when it operates in the 0.8 mm injection position condition.  相似文献

Hydrogen direct injection (HDI) in cylinder is considered as an effective method to improve natural gas engine performance. The present study aims to bridge the gap on the HDI in rotary engine, and to investigate the effect of hydrogen injection timing (IT) and hydrogen injection duration (ID) on mixture formation and combustion process of a hydrogen direct injection plus natural gas port injection (HDI + NGPI) rotary engine. Numerical approach was used in this study for obtaining some critical information, which was difficult to obtain through experiment, such as flow field, fuel distribution and some intermediate concentration fields in cylinder. The research results showed that for mixture formation, the distribution law of the hydrogen and the natural gas at the late stages of the compression stroke (100°CA (BTDC)), was as follows: at a fixed ID of 24°CA, with retarded hydrogen IT, the stratification phenomenon of hydrogen became obvious increasingly, and the hydrogen distribution area moved towards the back of the combustion chamber continuously. At a fixed IT of 210°CA (BTDC), with the extension in ID, the accumulation area of hydrogen reduced significantly, and the hydrogen continued to gather in the middle of the combustion chamber. For combustion process, the overall combustion rate for the hydrogen injection strategy which had an IT of 210°CA (BTDC) and ID of 40°CA (case ID5), was the fastest. This was due to the fact that compared with the leading spark plug (LSP), the combustion condition around the trailing spark plug (TSP) has a great influence on the combustion process. For case ID5 at ignition timing, the hydrogen concentration near the TSP is high enough for the rapid formation of flame kernel. Compared with case IT1 which had an IT of 390°CA (BTDC) and an ID of 24°CA, the improved combustion rate of case ID5 had a 11.7% increase in peak pressure, and a 7% decrease in NO emissions.  相似文献

Hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine, with few available research currently, has excellent power and emission characteristics, however, with lower efficiency. With increasing attention to low-carbon emission, it is of great significance to explore methods to improve the efficiency of hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engines. This work aims to study the effect of qualitative control coupling variable engine speeds at the wide-open throttle on the power control. The comparative effect of qualitative control coupling engine speeds from 1000 r/min to 1500 r/min under the wide-open throttle and quantitative control at 1500 r/min on the combustion and emission characteristic of hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine is investigated. The results show that compared with quantitative control, qualitative control coupling variable engine speed can achieve excellent performance. The brake thermal efficiency can be maximally increased by 43.5%, an absolute increase of 6.22%, as well the volumetric efficiency with a maximal 105% improvement. The thermal load and risk of knock can be greatly reduced. Moreover, NO emission also can be reduced by more than an order of magnitude or even by zero. Although there is an increase in cyclic variation, the value is no more than 4%. In addition, qualitative control coupling variable engine speed allows flexible matching of appropriate engine speed and excess air ratio based on the actual requirements of efficiency, stability, durability and emission.  相似文献

In this paper, a rotary engine equipped with an n-butanol and hydrogen port-injection system was developed to investigate the combustion and emissions characteristics of a hydrogen-blended n-butanol rotary engine at part load and stoichiometric conditions. A self-developed hybrid electronic control unit was adopted to adjust the injection durations of n-butanol and hydrogen. The rotary engine was run under the conditions of 4000 rpm, a manifold absolute pressure of 35 kPa and a fixed spark timing of 45 °CA before the top dead center during the whole testing operation. The hydrogen volumetric fraction in the total intake was varied from 0% to 6.30%. The test results manifested that the brake thermal efficiency and chamber temperature were simultaneously increased with hydrogen addition. The hydrogen supplement obviously shortened flame development and propagation periods. Both chamber pressure integral heat release fraction versus crank angle were increased when the hydrogen fraction was enhanced. HC emissions were reduced by 54.5% when hydrogen volume fraction was raised from 0% to 6.30%, CO and CO2 emissions were also reduced after increasing hydrogen blending fraction. NOx emissions were mildly elevated due to the improved chamber temperature.  相似文献

The hydrogen-fueled Wanke rotary engine is a promising power system that has both high power and eco-friendly properties. This work investigated the effect of ignition timing on a dual-spark plugs synchronous-ignition hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine under low speed, part load and lean combustion. The results show that with delaying the ignition timing, CA0-10 is shortened first and then lengthened and CA10-90 is consistently shortened. When the CA50 is located between 35 and 40°CA ATDC, the maximum brake torque can be realized. Besides, the selection of ignition timing needs to consider the “trade-off” relationship between the combustion phase and corresponding in-cylinder pressure. The maximum brake torque ignition timing is between 5 and 10°CA ATDC. And there is also a “trade-off” relationship between stability and thermal load when ignition timing is selected. In addition, HC and NO emissions will not become the problem limiting the power performance of hydrogen-fueled Wankel rotary engine under this operating condition.  相似文献

In this paper, the knock phenomenon of reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) engine fueled with natural gas/diesel was numerically studied. The knock mechanism of the RCCI engine is explained and the strategy of suppressing knock is put forward. The knock characteristics were studied by setting monitoring points in different spaces positions of the cylinder. The results show that the pressure oscillation amplitude at the center and edge of the cylinder is large under the high load condition of RCCI engine. In addition, the knock mechanism was studied by using pressure difference method, maximum amplitude of pressure oscillation, important components, temperature isosurface, pressure fluctuation and heat release rate. The results show that the knock of RCCI engine is mainly caused by the end-gas auto-ignition. The pressure difference results show that the characteristic frequency is consistent with the natural resonance mode (0,1) of the cylindrical combustion chamber. On this basis, the effects of pilot oil injection timing and compression ratio on engine knock are further studied. It is confirmed that diesel knock and end-gas knock may exist simultaneously in the same cycle when RCCI engine knock occurs. And diesel knock occurs before top dead center, and end-gas knock occurs after top dead center. Proper adjustment of pilot oil injection timing and reduction of compression ratio can effectively suppress engine knock.  相似文献

The combustion process within the cylinder directly influences the thermal efficiency and performance of the engines. As for the rotary engine, the long-narrow combustion chamber prevents the mixture from fully burning, which worsens the performance of the rotary engine. As a fuel with excellent properties, hydrogen can improve the combustion of the original engine. In this paper, improvements in combustion of a gasoline rotary engine by hydrogen supplement under different operating conditions were experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted on a modified hydrogen-gasoline dual-fuel rotary engine equipped with an electronically-controlled fuel injection system. An electronic control module was specially made to command the fuel injection, excess air ratio and hydrogen volumetric fraction. Integral heat release fraction (IHRF) was employed to evaluate the combustion of the tested engine. The tested engine was first run at the idle speed of 2400 rpm and then operated at 4500 rpm to investigate the combustion of the hydrogen-blended gasoline rotary engine under different hydrogen volume fractions, excess air ratios and spark timings. The testing results demonstrated that the combustion of the gasoline rotary engine were all improved when the hydrogen was blended into the chamber under all tested conditions.  相似文献
