针对高工作电流密度下,燃料电池内局部水淹导致的传质损失问题,本研究提出了一种阴极流道多进口分流进气方式。实验研究了三种典型分流口位置及分流进量对电池性能的影响。研究发现随着分流口远离阴极主进气口,电池性能呈现先上升后下降的趋势,且当分流口靠近主进气口时,增加分流量有助于电池性能提升,但分流量的增加对电池性能的提升存在一个极限值;因此,在对电池进行分流进气优化时需综合考虑分流口位置和分流量的影响。当分流口为SIP-30%且分流量为按化学当量比ξc = 0.75取值时,分流进气方式相比传统进气方式,电池的最大功率密度高出17.8%。  相似文献

A novel cathode flow-field design suitable for a passive air-cooled polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack is proposed to enhance the water-retaining capability under excess dry air supply conditions. The innovative cathode flow-field is designed to supply more air to the cooling channels and further enables deceleration of the reactant air in the gas channels and acceleration of the coolant air in the cooling channels simultaneously along the air flow path. Therefore, the design facilitates the waste heat removal through the cooling channels while the water removal by the reactant air is minimized. The conceptual cathode flow-field design is validated using a three-dimensional PEM fuel cell model. The detailed simulation results clearly demonstrate that the new cathode flow-field design exhibits superior water-retaining capability compared with a conventional cathode flow-field design (parallel flow channel configuration) under typical air-cooled fuel cell operating conditions. This study provides a new strategy to design cathode flow-fields to alleviate notorious membrane dehydration and unstable performance issues in a passive air-cooled PEM fuel cell stack.  相似文献

A three-dimensional, two-phase, multi-component model is used to investigate the effects of channel assembled angle on the performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, including distribution of current density, membrane water content and local temperature. The flow-fields are assembled by single serpentine channels in anode and cathode with intersection angles of 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, respectively. At high inlet humidity condition each flow-field has its owned strengths. Flow-fields with channel assembled angles of 0°, 90° and 270° show most uniform membrane water content, current density and local temperature distributions, respectively. However, at low inlet humidity condition, flow-field with channel assembled angle of 90° represents highest performance and uniformities in all aspects. Flow-field design for PEM fuel cell should take into account the effects of channel assembled angle on cell performance.  相似文献

Serpentine flow-fields are widely used for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells due to effective water removal. In this study, the effects of serpentine flow-field designs on the performance of a commercial-scale PEM fuel cell stack for micro-CHP (Combined Heat & Power) systems, which use reformed gas as fuel, are investigated by performing both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and experimental measurements. First, we design four different serpentine flow-fields in which the total channel area (defined as open channel area in this study) of a flow-field plate is altered without changing other design parameters such as the channel cross-sectional area and the channel length. Then, CFD simulations and experimental measurements are performed to assess the performance of each flow-field design. The CFD simulation results show that the current density distributions and average current densities are very insensitive to the open channel area. Thus, the information from the simulations is not sufficient to judge whether the open channel area affects the performance of a PEM fuel cell. On the other hand, the experimental measurements indicate that the performances of four fuel cell stacks, each with one of the four flow-field designs used in the simulations, are considerably different. Increasing the open channel area of a serpentine flow-field improves the performance of the PEM fuel cell up to a certain extent.  相似文献

The cathode flow-field design of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) determines its reactant transport rates to the catalyst layer and removal rates of liquid water from the cell. This study optimizes the cathode flow field for a single serpentine PEM fuel cell with 5 channels using the heights of channels 2–5 as search parameters. This work describes an optimization approach that integrates the simplified conjugated-gradient scheme and a three-dimensional, two-phase, non-isothermal fuel cell model. The proposed optimal serpentine design, which is composed of three tapered channels (channels 2–4) and a final diverging channel (channel 5), increases cell output power by 11.9% over that of a cell with straight channels. These tapered channels enhance main channel flow and sub-rib convection, both increasing the local oxygen transport rate and, hence, local electrical current density. A diverging, final channel is preferred, conversely, to minimize reactant leakage to the outlet. The proposed combined approach is effective in optimizing the cathode flow-field design for a single serpentine PEMFC. The role of sub-rib convection on cell performance is demonstrated.  相似文献

It has been reported recently that water flooding in the cathode gas channel has significant effects on the characteristics of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. A better understanding of this phenomenon with the aid of an accurate model is necessary for improving the water management and performance of fuel cell. However, this phenomenon is often not considered in the previous one-dimensional models where zero or a constant liquid water saturation level is assumed at the interface between gas diffusion layer and gas channel. In view of this, a one-dimensional fuel cell model that includes the effects of two-phase flow in the gas channel is proposed. The liquid water saturation along the cathode gas channel is estimated by adopting Darcy’s law to describe the convective flow of liquid water under various inlet conditions, i.e. air pressure, relative humidity and air stoichiometry. The averaged capillary pressure of gas channel calculated from the liquid water saturation is used as the boundary value at the interface to couple the cathode gas channel model to the membrane electrode assembly model. Through the coupling of the two modeling domains, the water distribution inside the membrane electrode assembly is associated with the inlet conditions. The simulation results, which are verified against experimental data and simulation results from a published computational fluid dynamics model, indicate that the effects of relative humidity and stoichiometry of inlet air are crucial to the overall fuel cell performance. The proposed model gives a more accurate treatment of the water transport in the cathode region, which enables an improved water management through an understanding of the effects of inlet conditions on the fuel cell performance.  相似文献

The water management in the air flow channel of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell cathode is numerically investigated using the FLUENT software package. By enabling the volume of fraction (VOF) model, the air–water two-phase flow can be simulated under different operating conditions. The effects of channel surface hydrophilicity, channel geometry, and air inlet velocity on water behavior, water content inside the channel, and two-phase pressure drop are discussed in detail. The results of the quasi-steady-state simulations show that: (1) the hydrophilicity of reactant flow channel surface is critical for water management in order to facilitate water transport along channel surfaces or edges; (2) hydrophilic surfaces also increase pressure drop due to liquid water spreading; (3) a sharp corner channel design could benefit water management because it facilitates water accumulation and provides paths for water transport along channel surface opposite to gas diffusion layer; (4) the two-phase pressure drop inside the air flow channel increases almost linearly with increasing air inlet velocity.  相似文献

In this paper, a two-phase two-dimensional PEM fuel cell model, which is capable of handling liquid water transport across different porous materials, is employed for parametric studies of liquid water transport and distribution in the cathode of a PEM fuel cell. Attention is paid particularly to the coupled effects of two-phase flow and heat transfer phenomena. The effects of key operation parameters, including the outside cell boundary temperature, the cathode gas humidification condition, and the cell operation current, on the liquid water behaviors and cell performance have been examined in detail. Numerical results elucidate that increasing the fuel cell temperature would not only enhance liquid water evaporation and thus decrease the liquid saturation inside the PEM fuel cell cathode, but also change the location where liquid water is condensed or evaporated. At a cell boundary temperature of 80 °C, liquid water inside the catalyst layer and gas diffusion media under the current-collecting land would flow laterally towards the gas channel and become evaporated along an interface separating the land and channel. As the cell boundary temperature increases, the maximum current density inside the membrane would shift laterally towards the current-collecting land, a phenomenon dictated by membrane hydration. Increasing the gas humidification condition in the cathode gas channel and/or increasing the operating current of the fuel cell could offset the temperature effect on liquid water transport and distribution.  相似文献

Non‐uniform current distribution in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells results in local over‐heating, accelerated ageing, and lower power output than expected. This issue is quite critical when a fuel cell experiences water flooding. In this study, the performance of a PEM fuel cell is investigated under cathode flooding conditions. A two‐dimensional approach is proposed for a single PEM fuel cell based on conservation laws and electrochemical equations to provide useful insight into water transport mechanisms and their effect on the cell performance. The model results show that inlet stoichiometry and humidification, and cell operating pressure are important factors affecting cell performance and two‐phase transport characteristics. Numerical simulations have revealed that the liquid saturation in the cathode gas distribution layer (GDL) could be as high as 20%. The presence of liquid water in the GDL decreases oxygen transport and surface coverage of active catalyst, which in turn degrades the cell performance. The thermodynamic quality in the cathode flow channel is found to be greater than 99.7%, indicating that liquid water in the cathode gas channel exists in very small amounts and does not interfere with the gas phase transport. A detailed analysis of the operating conditions shows that cell performance should be optimized based on the maximum average current density achieved and the magnitude of its dispersion from its mean value. The cross flow from channel to channel through gas diffusion layer (GDL) under the land could play an important role for water removal in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. In this study, characteristics of liquid water removal from GDL have been investigated experimentally, through measuring unsteady pressure drop in a cell which has the GDL initially wet with liquid water. The thickness of GDL is carefully controlled by inserting various thicknesses of metal shims between the plates. It has been found that severe compression of GDL could result in excessive pressure drop from channel inlet to channel outlet. Removing liquid water from GDL by cross flow is difficult for GDL with high compression levels and for low inlet air flow rates. However, effective water removal can still be achieved at high compression levels of GDL if the inlet air flow rate is high. Based on different compressed GDL thicknesses, different GDL porosities and permeabilities were calculated and their effects on the characteristics of liquid water removal from GDL were evaluated. Visualization of liquid water transport has been conducted by using transparent flow channel, and liquid water removal from GDL under the land was observed for all the tested inlet air flow rates, which confirms that cross flow is practically effective to remove the liquid water accumulated in GDL under the land area.  相似文献
