Interfacing Data Bases With Expert Systems: A Retaining Wall Management Application

This paper presents the development of an interface between an expert system and a data base management system. The flexibility provided by such interface is shown to be very useful for civil engineering applications. An example application is developed in this paper that applies this interface to the management of retaining walls. The different relational data bases store most of the required information. The inventory data base stores identification information, the inspection data base stores historical condition data gathered by inspections, and the replacement data base stores information needed to perform a replacement cost analysis for a retaining wall. The expert system, on the other hand, is used to diagnose the possible reasons for the failure of a retaining wall. The development of the data base management system, the expert system, and the interface between them is discussed, along with the restrictions imposed by the software chosen for this example application.     

An Expert System for Tunnel Design

In this article, we describe the development of an expert system (ES) for tunnel design and preent some applications of the system. The system has been developed by our research group consisting of 21 people closely involved with the tunnel design under the leadership of Nagoya University. The system consists of four subexpert systems (1) ES for standard tunnel design methods, (2) ES for framed structure method, (3) ES for theoretical design methods, and (4) ES for numerical analysis design method; a common part to control the overall system; and two data base systems (tunnel data base system and rock mass data base system).

A Data Base Management System (DBMS) for Formwork Design Applications

Data base management technology can improve the quality and reduce the cost of temporary works design. This is achieved by allowing the computer to handle the tedium of translating and transmitting data between programs and allowing the designers to concentrate on the quality of the underlying design. This paper lays the foundation for the use of microcomputer data base management technology in temporary works design, using formwork design as the problem base. It concentrates on the development of a data base management system called dBFICADS. It has been used to support the data-handling requirements of an integrated computer-aided design system for form-work Key issues regarding information modeling, DBMS implementation, and the interface between the DBMS and application programs are addressed.

 在三峡库区开展的地质灾害稳定性评价、危险性区划、风险分析以及滑坡灾害预测预报所获成果的基础上,利用三期灾害地质图编绘、专业监测中崩塌滑坡预报模型和预报判据等资料,根据气象、库水位变化、人类工程活动、滑坡监测等信息,开发基于WEBGIS和四库一体技术的滑坡灾害预测预报系统。该系统主要包括区域滑坡灾害危险性评价、单体滑坡灾害时间预报、滑坡涌浪计算、灾情评估以及信息实时发布等功能模块,集成20多种适应于库区地质环境规律和滑坡灾害发育特点的模型;四库一体模式(模型库、方法库、数据仓库、知识库)即以模型为主导,调用方法,提取数据,模型求解,最后将专家决策结果作为知识源存入知识库。该系统在示范区巴东新城区和典型滑坡八字门和白水河滑坡上进行试运行,取得较好的应用成果,该系统的设计与实现为库区地质灾害预警决策和应急指挥提供技术支持,为库区人民生命和财产安全提供强有力的保障。     

A portable data system for reindeer herd management

A portable computer system is described which supports timely data management for reindeer herding. An initial version has been in use for two years, supporting research on reindeer diseases. Versions are being developed which will expand the system to support commercial herd management. The hardware system is integrated from commercially available equipment. The software is currently composed of a set of ten programs, with others under development for enhancements and modifications. At field roundups, the computer allows new animals to be added to the data base plus rapid access to information on existing individual animals. Historical information can be displayed, including detailed historical records of reproductive activity, medical treatments, serological exam results, and observations of anomalies (e.g. infections, injuries, etc.). In the field, or in the lab, the data base may be accessed for information on specific animals and for summaries of herd data.
