Human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) has recently received special attention. It has been shown that exposure to BPA may occur through the consumption of beverages or foods that have been in contact with polycarbonate (PC) plastic containers or epoxy resins in food packaging. A BPA migration study was conducted using a variety of plastic containers, including polycarbonate baby bottles, non-PC baby bottles, baby bottle liners, and reusable PC drinking bottles. Water was used to simulate migration into aqueous and acidic foods; 10% ethanol solution to simulate migration to low- and high-alcoholic foods; and 50% ethanol solution to simulate migration to fatty foods. By combining solid-phase extraction, BPA derivatization and analysis by GC-EI/MS/MS, a very low detection limit at the ng l?1 level was obtained. Migration of BPA at 40°C ranged from 0.11 µg l?1 in water incubated for 8 h to 2.39 µg l?1 in 50% ethanol incubated for 240 h. Residual BPA leaching from PC bottles increased with temperature and incubation time. In comparison with the migration observed from PC bottles, non-PC baby bottles and baby bottle liners showed only trace levels of BPA. Tests for leachable lead and cadmium were also conducted on glass baby bottles since these represent a potential alternative to plastic bottles. No detectable lead or cadmium was found to leach from the glass. This study indicated that non-PC plastic baby bottles, baby bottle liners and glass baby bottles might be good alternatives for polycarbonate bottles. 相似文献

Seed storage is a major challenge for smallholder farmers in developing nations. Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags effectively control the postharvest insect pests of cowpea and other crops. Farmers, encouraged by this success, have begun to expand the use of PICS bags for storing other crops. Little is known about how sorghum seed, one of these important crops, fares when stored under hermetic conditions. Accordingly, we stored sorghum seed for six months in either airtight containers (PICS bags or sealed plastic bottles) or open ones (woven polypropylene bags and open plastic bottles). Overall, sorghum seed stored in PICS bags and in sealed plastic bottles maintained its initial moisture level, germination rate and seed weight. Porous polypropylene bags and open plastic bottles lost moisture over six months. We conclude that sorghum seed can be safely stored in hermetic containers without any loss of quality for extended periods of time. 相似文献

Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags have been developed and extended as a way to address grain storage issues faced by smallholder farmers in developing nations. A hermetic technology, PICS bags reduce insect damage to grain significantly while maintaining its quality for many months or longer. Farmers with varying and often small volumes of grain at harvest, may still benefit from alternatives to PICS bags for storing their grain. We evaluated plastic bottles, which may be hermetically sealed, for storing maize grain. Clean maize grain was stored for eight months in sealed and unsealed plastic bottles with half of these bottles being infested by maize weevil (Sitophilus zemais, Motschulsky). Oxygen levels in the bottles were monitored throughout the trial and grain was assessed for moisture content, insect damage, germination rate and insect population size when the study was terminated. Sealed bottles preserved grain quality significantly better than unsealed, infested bottles and as well as non-infested unsealed containers. Plastic soda bottles can be used as hermetic containers for safely storing grain. 相似文献

Baby bottles are often made of polycarbonate plastic. Impurities remaining in the bottle from the monomer bisphenol A can migrate from the plastic bottles into baby food, thereby causing a health concern. Previous migration testing of new baby bottles showed only trace migration levels of the substance. In the present work, polycarbonate baby bottles were subjected to simulated use by dishwashing, boiling and brushing. Migration testing performed with both new and used bottles revealed a significant increase in migration of bisphenol A due to use. This finding might be explained by polymer degradation. Bisphenol A was determined in 200-ml samples of water food simulant by a method based on solid-phase extraction followed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The detection limit was 0.1 μg l-1. Twelve different polycarbonate baby bottles were tested by filling them with hot water (100°C) for 1 h. The mean bisphenol A level from new bottles was 0.23 + -0.12 μg l-1, while the mean levels from bottles subjected to simulated use were 8.4 + -4 μg l-1 (dishwashed 51 times) and 6.7 + -4 μg l-1 (dishwashed 169 times), respectively. None of the bottles released bisphenol A at levels that exceed the recently established provisional tolerable daily intake (0.01 mg kg-1 body weight/day) in the European Union. 相似文献

The increased use of refillable poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) bottles as packaging for soft drinks has prompted us to investigate the effect of sorption of artificially introduced chemical contaminants into refillable PET bottles in order to establish a practical and easy-to-apply test procedure to evaluate their chemical inertness. For this evaluation, quick laboratory procedures, which focus on the interaction of PET bottle wall strips in place of actual bottles with a selection of model contaminants representing the myriad of chemicals, are proposed. The first objective of this study was to validate a modified quick chemical inertness test method for refillable bottles by comparing the results of sorption into PET strips with those of tests using actual PET bottles. A further objective was to investigate the stability of refillable PET bottles which were stored under unfavorable conditions, in relation to the chemical inertness behavior of the material. The results indicate the suitability of the modified quick test as it satisfactorily simulates contamination of refillable PET bottles. Moreover, storage of these bottles under unfavorable conditions does not have an adverse effect on the chemical inertness behavior of the plastic material. 相似文献

The aim of the project was to develop a comprehensive package of quality assurance criteria for use by the industry and by regulatory authorities to ensure the quality and safety-in-use (sensory, microbiological and chemical safety) of reused plastics for food packaging. The paper describes the investigations into potential adulteration effects by reuse on the intrinsic properties of plastics in more detail. The plastic articles investigated were bottles of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polycarbonate (PC) and vending cups of polypropylene (PP). The influence of repeated use on the migration of plastic constituents, degradation products of plastic additives, barrier properties and surface characteristics were investigated. The overall conclusion was that the investigated intrinsic properties of the refillable articles were not significantly influenced by repeated use. Only the hydrophobicity of the refillable PC and PP articles seemed to be influenced by repeated washing. PC bottles washed 15 times were significantly less hydrophobic than unwashed bottles. 相似文献

Sealing system and bottle storage position effects on the evolution of white and red wines were analyzed. The sealing systems were natural‐cork stopper, colmated‐cork stopper, agglomerated‐cork stopper, polyurethane‐powdered‐cork (PPC) stopper, plastic stopper, and metal screw‐top. Chemical analysis and sensory analysis showed that wine is better preserved when the bottles are kept horizontally. The sealing systems that allowed the most suitable evolution were the natural‐cork stopper, the colmated‐cork stopper, and the PPC stopper. The agglomerated cork produced faster wine oxidation when the bottles were kept vertically. The plastic cork and the screw‐top allowed oxidation in the wine more quickly than the other systems. 相似文献
