The Khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), is a serious pest of grain and other stored products through the world. In this research, effect of five host diets including barley, rice, rye, wheat and walnut was studied on some of biological traits, nutritional indices and digestive enzymatic activity of T. granarium at 33 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h. The Khapra beetle larvae reared on walnut had the highest number of larval instar and longest duration of larval and pupal stages (91.30 ± 0.4 days). The heaviest pupal weight of T. granarium was on rye (4.22 ± 0.01 mg) and the lightest weight was on rice (3.99 ± 0.01 mg) and walnut (4.00 ± 0.01 mg). The highest realized fecundity and fertility were recorded for the females reared on rye (45.88 ± 1.08 eggs/female and 69.39 ± 0.68%, respectively) and wheat (49.02 ± 1.55 eggs/female and 67.54 ± 0.69%, respectively), and the lowest ones were observed for the females came from larvae fed walnut (15.45 ± 0.71 eggs/female and 34.55 ± 0.82%, respectively). Also, the results showed that T. granarium larvae reared on walnut had the lowest values of the efficiency of conversion of ingested food (7.67 ± 0.04%) and relative growth rate (0.044 ± 0.0002 mg/mg/day). The lowest midgut amylolytic (0.044 ± 0.0005 and 0.047 ± 0.0005 mU/individual, respectively) and proteolytic (0.015 ± 0.0004 and 0.016 ± 0.0001 mU/individual, respectively) activity of the sixth instar was detected on walnut and rice. The highest inhibition of amylase (53.37 ± 0.75%) and protease activity (48.54 ± 0.96%) was estimated by incubating midgut extracts from the last instars with wheat and barley proteinaceous extracts, respectively. The results indicated that walnut was the most unsuitable diet for feeding and development of T. granarium.  相似文献

The Khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), is one of the economic pests infesting many stored cereals in the world. The effects of six commercial rice, Oryza sativa L. cultivars including Hashemi, Shiroodi, Gilane, Khazar, Ali Kazemi and Domsiah were evaluated on nutritional indices and digestive enzymatic activity of fifth instar T. granarium at controlled conditions (33±1 °C, relative humidity of 65 ± 5%, and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h). Fifth instar larvae consumed more food when reared on Gilane, and less food when reared on Khazar and Ali Kazemi. The larvae fed with Khazar had the lowest weight gain, efficiency of conversion of ingested food and growth index. The relative growth rate was the highest when larvae were fed with Gilane and lowest when they were fed with Khazar. The highest midgut proteolytic and amylolytic activities of larvae were on Gilane. However, the lowest proteolytic activity was on Khazar and the lowest amylolytic activity was on Khazar and Ali Khazemi. According to the obtained results, Khazar is an unsuitable cultivar for feeding and growth of T. granarium.  相似文献

The Khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), is an important insect pest of stored cereals, grains and other stored products in Iran and some countries of the world. Nutritional indices and digestive enzymatic activity of fifth instar T. granarium were investigated on nine maize hybrids (704, AR 89, AS 71, AS 77, BC 678, KSC 703, PL 472, SC 704, and Simax) at 33 ± 1 °C, relative humidity of 65 ± 5%, and a photoperiod of 14: 10 (L: D) h. The highest and lowest food consumption by larvae was on AR 89 and BC 678, respectively. Fifth instar larvae fed on 704 had the highest efficiency of conversion of ingested food, and those fed on BC 678 showed the lowest relative growth rate. The larval growth index, standardized insect-growth index and fitness index were the highest when larvae were reared on PL 472, and the lowest when they were reared on BC 678. The highest proteolytic and amylolytic activity was on KSC 703, and the lowest activity was on BC 678. The results of this study indicated that BC 678 was an unsuitable hybrid for feeding of fifth instar T. granarium. Studying the nutritional physiology of T. granarium on different maize hybrids can be useful in identifying the anti digestive compounds of host grains, which can be expressed in genetically engineered crops to confer resistance to this key pest.  相似文献

Nutritional performance and digestive amylase and protease activity of fifth instar larvae were studied on different commercial rice cultivars (Sadri, Tarom, Neda, Fajr, Nemat, Shafagh, Kadous, Gohar, Gilane, and Khazar) at 33 ± 1 °C, relative humidity of 65 ± 5%, and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h. Larvae fed with cultivar Gilane consumed more food and increased body weight higher than those fed with other cultivars. However, the lowest values of nutritional indices were found in larvae fed with cultivar Khazar. The lightest pupal weight was on cultivars Fajr, Nemat and Sadri. The larval growth index differed from 1.99 to 2.67 on cultivars Khazar and Tarom, respectively. Among various tested cultivars, the highest standardized insect-growth index was on cultivar Gilane, whereas the lowest index was on cultivars Fajr, Nemat and Sadri. Furthermore, the fitness index showed the highest value on cultivars Gilane and Neda, and the lowest on cultivar Sadri. The amylolytic activity was the highest in larvae fed with cultivar Gilane, and the lowest in larvae fed with cultivars Fajr and Khazar. The cultivar Gilane-fed larvae exhibited the highest proteolytic activity as compared with other cultivars. The cluster analysis showed that Nemat, Neda, Fajr and Khazar were the least suitable (partially resistant) cultivars to T. granarium, which could be further investigated to identify proteins that contribute to khapra beetle resistance.  相似文献

The Khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts, is one of the most important pests of grains which rapidly infests durable stored products in hot and dry conditions. In the current study, effects of omit ten varieties of barley (Abidar, Bahman, Line20, Line22, Line30, Lisivi, Lokht11, Makuyi, Sahand and Sahraa) were determined on digestive enzymes and protein metabolsim of T. granarium larvae under laboratory conditions as 33 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and photoperiod of 14:10 (L: D) h. The highest and the lowest activities of α-amylase were observed in T. granarium larvae fed on Line30 and Lisivi varieties, respectively but the glucosidases showed the highest activities followed by feeding on Lokht 11. Also, the latter variety caused the highest lipase activity in the larvae while Abidar, Line20, Lisuei and Sahand imposed the lowest lipase activity. The highest activities of serine proteases including trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase were detected in the larvae fed on Line 30 but the two exopeptidases, amino- and carboxypeptidases, showed the highest activities when the larvae fed on Lisuei. All the three aminotransferses had the highest activities in the larvae fed on Lokht 11 as the related individuals contained the maximum amount of protein compared to other ones. Results of the current study highlighted Line30 as the most suitable variety to be digested by serine proteases and α-amylase but Lokht11 is appropriately digested by glucosidases and lipase which emboss their susceptibilities to T. granarium. Our findings on digestion and protein metabolism imply on susceptibility of varieties Line30 and Lokht11 to T. granarium larvae.  相似文献

The life history of the khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), was investigated on cracked peeled barley, cracked peeled oats and cracked triticale. The results suggest that the biological and demographic parameters of T. granarium are affected by the tested commodities. The developmental time of total immature period of T. granarium was significantly lower on barley (35.06 days) than on oats (42.87 days) and triticale (43.58 days). Mean longevities of adult females were 7.00, 7.89 and 8.24 days, and for adult males were 5.79, 6.05 and 5.49 days when T. granarium fed on barley, oats and triticale, respectively. The highest fecundity recorded when T. granarium fed on barley (39.0 eggs/female) or triticale (35.2 eggs/female), but it was significantly lower when this species fed on oats (25.4 eggs/female). While the net reproductive rate did not differ significantly when T. granarium fed on barley (14.6 females/female), oats 10.2 (females/female) and triticale (11.0 females/female), the mean generation time was significantly lower when fed on barley (40.5 days) than on oats (48.7 days) and triticale (46.1 days). The intrinsic rate of increase of T. granarium did not differ significantly when fed on barley and triticale (0.066 and 0.052 females/female/day, respectively), but it was significantly lower when fed on oats (0.047 females/female/day). The biological and demographic parameters of T. granarium may be incorporated in population models that evaluate the population dynamics aiming to the optimization of management strategies against this noxious species.  相似文献

We evaluated the population growth of the khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) on different grains, cracked wheat containment categories and amylaceous materials by conducting three series of laboratory bioassays. In the first series, peeled barley, whole (raw) barley, peeled oats, whole (raw) oats, peeled rice, rough rice, rye, triticale and hard wheat were tested. In the second series, six cracked wheat containment categories were tested: wheat containing intact kernels only (0% cracked kernels), wheat containing 5% cracked kernels and 95% intact kernels, wheat containing 10% cracked kernels and 90% intact kernels, wheat containing 25% cracked kernels and 75% intact kernels, wheat containing 50% cracked kernels and 50% intact kernels and wheat containing 100% cracked kernels. In the third series, the following amylaceous commodities were tested: hard wheat (intact kernels), whole oat flakes, maize flour, whole barley flour, pasta, white soft wheat flour, whole soft wheat flour, white hard wheat flour, whole hard wheat flour, whole rye flour and semolina. Significantly more dead adults were found on wheat than on peeled barley, maize, whole oats, rough rice and rye. Significantly more larvae alive were found on wheat and triticale, than on the other grains, with the exception of oats, both whole and peeled. The increase of the percentage of cracked wheat kernels increased population growth, except in the case of 10% cracked wheat kernels. In vials that contained 100% cracked wheat kernels, 584.1 individuals per vial were found, which was 3.7 times more than the respective number of larvae alive in vials with intact wheat kernels only. Significantly more dead adults were found on whole barley flour than on the other commodities. More than 1213 larvae per vial were recorded on whole barley flour, which was 1.3–15 times higher than the other commodities. The lowest number of larvae alive was found on pasta, followed by the white soft wheat flour. The findings of the present work show that some commodities are more prone to spread T. granarium than others, a fact which should be seriously taken into account in international trade of grains and related amylaceous products.  相似文献

The aleurone cells of barley, wheat, rice, rye, oats and triticale contained, comparatively, higher percentages of phosphorus than the aleurone cells of sorghum, maize or millet. The aleurone tissues of barley, wheat and rice had more phosphate than corresponding tissues of sorghum and maize. Phosphate was not detected in the aleurone tissue of maize but was found in trace amounts in the aleurone tissue of sorghum.  相似文献

The Khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), is known as a serious pest of stored grains and stored products. Host plant is an effective ecological factor on performance of an insect pest. In this study, effects of ten wheat cultivars were evaluated on life table parameters and nutritional indices of T. granarium under laboratory conditions, 33 ± 1 °C, 60 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 14: 10 (L: D) h. Our research showed that various wheat cultivars have significant effects on life history, demographical parameters and nutritional indices of T. granarium. The highest immature survival rate was observed on cultivar Gaskojen. Significant differences on developmental time, adult fecundity and longevity of T. granarium were found across tested wheat cultivars. In addition, there were significant differences among the wheat cultivars for population growth parameters of T. granarium. The highest (rm) values were observed on Gaskojen (0.078 eggs/female/day) and its lower values were resulted from rearing of T. granarium on Kouhdasht and Bezostaya. The larvae fed on Gaskojen showed the higher value of food consumption as compared with others. In addition, the higher value of relative growth rate (RGR) was found on cultivar Gaskojen, while the relative lower value was observed on cultivar Kouhdasht. The results indicated that Gaskojen cultivar was a relatively susceptible wheat cultivar and Kouhdasht cultivar was relatively unsuitable host for feeding of T. granarium which could prove useful in the development of IPM programs for this pest.  相似文献

The khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) is a dangerous insect of stored products that has currently expanded in Africa, Asia and Europe. Control of this species encounters difficulties when synthetic insecticides are applied either as surface treatments or as grain protectants. Therefore, new insecticidal formulations should be assessed as additional tools towards an effective management of T. granarium. In the current study, we tested the new insecticidal formulation Dobol, that contains the pyrethroid insecticide d-tetramethrin and the neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid, as treatments on concrete. Their direct and delayed mortality against adults and larvae of T. granarium were estimated under two label doses (min and max) and two temperature levels (30 and 35 °C) after 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7 d of exposure interval. Results revealed that Dobol caused direct mortality to T. granarium adults that ranged between 87.8 and 96.7%. Concerning larvae, direct mortality was generally much lower, being at most 84.4% at the max dose after 7 d of exposure. Temperature had significant impact on the direct mortality of T. granarium adults and larvae within the vast majority of the tested exposure intervals at both doses. However, when the surviving adults and larvae were transferred on untreated concrete surfaces, despite higher mortality at 35 than 30 °C, there was no significant impact of temperature on their mortalities within any exposure interval and dose. Our study revealed that Dobol is a promising insecticidal formulation that can be effectively used against adults and larvae of T. granarium on concrete surfaces.  相似文献

Flat grain beetles (Coleoptera: Laemophloeidae) are common stored-product insect pests in Canada, infesting cereals in grain bins, equipment and end products in flour mills. We studied the cold tolerance of the three most common flat grain beetles: Cryptolestes ferrugineus, Cryptolestes turcicus and Cryptolestes pusillus, by measuring the survival at −10 °C and supercooling point (SCP) for different life stages (egg, young larva, old larva, pupa and adult) reared on flour mixed with brewer’s yeast. Probit analysis was used to estimate the lethal time for 50 and 95% mortality. This was done with non-acclimated individuals (only held at 30 °C) or cold-acclimated individuals (held at 18, 10 and 5 °C, for 1 week/temperature). In general, adults were the most cold-hardy stage for each of the species. Acclimated insects were anywhere from no increase in cold tolerance to 14-fold more cold-tolerant than the corresponding non-acclimated stage and species. Cryptolestes ferrugineus was most cold-tolerant species (58 d at −10 °C to reach 95% mortality for acclimated adult), C. turcicus was the next most cold-tolerant, (39 d) and C. pusillus was the least cold-tolerant (11 d). The cold tolerance of adults reared on three diets was measured both for acclimated and non-acclimated insects. The adults reared on grain diet (whole wheat kernels, cracked wheat kernels and wheat germ (90:5:5 mass ratio) were the most cold-tolerant, adults reared on white-wheat flour and brewer’s yeast diet (95:5 mass ratio) had the next highest cold tolerance followed by the adults reared on 100% white-wheat flour. Supercooling point (SCP) of insects ranged from −20.6 to −26.7 °C. In general, acclimated insects had slightly lower SCP than non-acclimated insects.  相似文献

Bran is detached from cereals during roller-milling operations and considered as a byproduct of milling. Bran carries phenolics and antioxidants in appreciable quantities which can be heightened by modification. In the present project, four cereals were under study that is, wheat, barley, millet and sorghum. Bran was separated from cereal grains and was subjected to size reduction that is, fine (1 mm) and coarse (2 mm) and enzymatic modification by using xylanase and cellulase. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids content (TFC) and phytic acid were determined spectrophotometrically and phenolic acids through HPLC. TPC and TFC were recorded highest in xylanase-treated millet bran (0.304 mg GAE g−1 and 211.42 μg g−1 QE respectively). In vitro antioxidant activity assessed by DPPH and FRAP was found to be highest in coarse millet bran (89.51% inhibition) and native sorghum bran (722.52 μMFeSO4 g−1) respectively. Phytic acid was observed highest in xylanase-treated barley bran (5.80 g per 100 g).  相似文献

The cold hardiness profile of immature and adult stages of the Mediterranean flour moth, Ephestia kuehniella was investigated in the laboratory. Supercooling point (SCP) of early instars, late instars, pupae and adults of E. kuehniella was determined using a circulating bath with a cooling rate of 1 °C/min. Mean SCP of pupae was significantly lower (−23.3 °C) than that for early and late instars (−16.1 and −19.5 °C, respectively), but did not differ significantly from that for adults (−21.6 °C). Moreover, mortality at sub-zero temperature was estimated by cooling eggs, early instars, late instars, pupae and adults to −5, −7.5, −10 and −12.5 °C for 30, 60, 90 and 120 min. Main effects of temperature, exposure time and developmental stage on mortality proved to be significant. Two-way interactions as well as the three-way interaction between all tested factors also proved to be significant in most cases. Generally, pupae and adults were the most cold-tolerant, followed in decreasing order by late instars, early instars and eggs. However, when exposure temperature declined to −12.5 °C, no significant differences were observed between the developmental stages in any exposure, suggesting that temperatures as low as −12.5 °C are equally detrimental to all developmental stages. Complete mortality was observed only when early instars, late instars and adults were exposed to −12.5 °C for 120 min. In all tested temperature regimes mean lethal time (LTime50) of pupae was higher compared to the other developmental stages. Similarly, in all exposure times mean lethal temperature (LTemp50) of pupae was lower in relation to the other stages. Non-freezing injury above the SCP was well documented for all stages of E. kuehniella indicating a pre-freeze mortality. The potential of using low temperatures to control E. kuehniella is discussed.  相似文献

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate alpha-cypermethrin and thiamethoxam for the control of adults, small larvae and large larvae of the khapra beetle Trogoderma granarium, and the yellow mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor, on concrete. Factors such as dose (0.025 and 0.1 mg alpha-cypermethrin or thiamethoxam/cm2), exposure interval (1, 3 and 7 d), and formulation (alpha-cypermethrin SC and thiamethoxam WG) were evaluated. Apart from immediate assessment at end of exposure, an assessment of delayed mortality was performed with the survivors of the 7-d exposure by removing them from the treated substrate and keeping them on untreated surfaces for 7 more days. After the 7-d exposure, more T. granarium adults were dead on dishes treated with alpha-cypermethrin than with thiamethoxam. Small larvae were generally less susceptible than adults. After 7 d, small larval mortality reached 64.4% for alpha-cypermethrin, while for thiamethoxam it was <6%. Large T. granarium larvae were more tolerant than the small ones. Delayed mortality of T. granarium adults was generally high for both insecticides and doses, and ranged between 43.3 and 63.3% of those that were still alive immediately after the 7-d treatment. For both larval categories, delayed mortality was higher for larvae that had been previously exposed to alpha-cypermethrin, than with thiamethoxam. For T. molitor, after the 7-d exposure, significantly more adults were dead on dishes treated with alpha-cypermethrin than with thiamethoxam. For small larvae mortality was 38.9% at the lowest thiamethoxam dose, but in the other cases ranged between 88.9 and 95.6%. In the case of large larvae, the overall mortality was low in all tested combinations. Regarding delayed mortality of this species, it remained at low levels, for both adults and small larvae. Our results indicate that T. molitor was more susceptible than T. granarium in both insecticides tested, but alpha-cypermethrin was more effective than thiamethoxam.  相似文献

Commercial formulations of the pyrethroid insecticides β-cyfluthrin and deltamethrin were evaluated for delayed mortality of Trogoderma granarium (Everts), the khapra beetle, and T. inclusum (LeConte), the larger cabinet beetle. Ten 3-4 week-old larvae of either species were exposed on treated concrete arenas for 1, 2, 3, and 7 d then transferred into 175 ml diet cups containing 5 g of untreated rearing media for 30 d to evaluate delayed mortality. In a subsequent study, residual efficacy of β-cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, and chlorfenapyr was evaluated at 0–12 wks post-treatment against adults and larvae of a laboratory and a field strain of T. granarium. Ten adults or larvae of either strain were exposed on treated arenas at selected wks post-treatment and mortality was assessed after 4 and 30 d of exposure for adults and larvae, respectively. In the first study, delayed morality of T. granarium and T. inclusum larvae was <26% when exposed on arenas treated with the two pyrethroids, and T. inclusum larvae were less susceptible than T. granarium. Adult mortality was 90–100% for both strains of T. granarium across post-treatment assays regardless of insecticide treatment and there was no difference between strains. All three insecticides produced 100% mortality for the laboratory strain of T. granarium larvae in initial post-treatment assays, but then efficacy declined. Field strain larvae were more tolerant to the insecticides than laboratory strain larvae, and larvae of both T. granarium strains were more tolerant than adults. Longer exposure times were required to produce complete mortality of larvae compared to adults. All three insecticides provided residual efficacy of adults for up to three months.  相似文献

Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), is a wood-boring, destructive quarantine insect pest of stored cereal grains and tuber crops. Current disinfestation methods against this pest mainly include fumigants, whose usage in some countries has been contested and discontinued owing to increasing pesticide resistance, public health risks and environmental hazards. Grain temperature treatments thus, offer a sustainable non-chemical and near universally acceptable form of disinfestation for international commodity movement. Currently, blanket temperature treatments are applied regardless of as-yet-unknown P. truncatus developmental stage thermal mortality thresholds that simultaneously optimise grain quality. Here, we used established static and dynamic protocols to determine the low and high thermal profile of P. truncatus larvae and adults measured as critical thermal minima (CTmin), lower lethal temperatures (LLT0), chill coma recovery time (CCRT), supercooling points (SCPs), critical thermal maxima (CTmax), upper lethal temperatures (ULT0) and heat knock-down time (HKDT). We tested the adult ULT-time matrices on maize and sorghum grain quality (germination %) to determine the most effective temperature-time combination(s) retaining optimum grain germination quality. Our results showed adults had higher basal heat (CTmax and HKDT), cold (CTmin, CCRT and SCP) and potential thermal plasticity than larvae (P < 0.05). The LLTs and ULTs ranged −1 to −15 °C and 41–49 °C respectively. Using LLT0 and ULT0, our results showed that for heat treatment, moderate temperature × long duration matrix; i.e. either 45.5  °C × 4 h or 47  °C × 2  h were more efficacious while retaining commodity quality. Similarly, for cold treatment; −9 °C × 4 h, −11  °C × 2 h, −13  °C × 1 h and −15  °C × 0.5 h were effective for complete mortality. These temperature-time combinations may be a sustainable alternative to fumigants in phytosanitary grain disinfestation against P. truncatus or related pests. Such pest- and commodity -specific thermal profiling is critical for development of effective standardised grain disinfestation protocols.  相似文献

The carbohydrates soluble in 80% ethanol and in water at 100°C were extracted from two varieties of wheat, barley, oats, rye, triticale, rice and malt. The highest concentrations of sugars soluble in 80% ethanol were found in malt and rye with the lowest in rice. Barley contained the most raffinose and rye contained the most fructan. Rye had the highest levels of water-soluble and total pentosans and barley the highest levels of water-soluble and total (1→3), (1→4)-β-glucans. The total arabinose:xylose ratio varied from 1.2 in wheat and triticale to 0.3 in oats. All were very low in uronic acids.  相似文献

We evaluated the following six insecticides: cypermethrin, deltamethrin, pirimiphos-methyl, silicoSec, s-methoprene and spinosad, that are registered as grain protectants, against adults or larvae of the khapra beetle, Trogoderma granarium Everts (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) on wheat, barley, maize and rough rice. Three doses were tested: the half of the label dose, the label dose and the double label dose for each insecticide and mortality was assessed after 1, 3, 7 and 14 days (d) post exposure. For parental adults, progeny production was estimated after an additional period of 46 d of exposure. All tested insecticides were able to suppress T. granarium adults, even at the lowest dose. Pirimiphos-methyl and silicoSec were found to be most effective than the other insecticides, as these were the only ones that caused application resulted in 100% mortality at the 7-d exposure interval, at the half label or label dose. Conversely, the majority of the insecticides tested were found to be ineffective against T. granarium larvae. Pirimiphos-methyl was the only insecticide on which larval mortality reached 100% on all commodities tested and by far more effective than the other insecticides. For both adults and larvae, mortalities were generally higher on wheat and barley, than on rough rice and maize, for most of the combinations tested. This study aimed to evaluate insecticidal activity of three diatomaceous earths DEs, two originated from Serbia (DE S-1 and DE S-2) and one commercial formulation (Protect-It, Hedley Technologies Ltd. Canada) applied at rates of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/kg (500, 1000 and 1500 ppm) on Rhyzopertha dominica in wheat, barley, rye, oats and triticale grains and their effects on mass of kernels and several properties: adherence, hectolitre mass, moisture, protein and ash contents. Mortality of R. dominica adults increased with exposure duration and DEs rates. In all tested grains after the longest exposure period (21 days), 1.0 and 1.5 g/kg rates of Protect-It, and 1.5 g/kg rate of DE S-1 and DE S-2 (in barley) caused 95–100% mortality. Offspring reduction of ≥95% was recorded after the application of 1.0 and 1.5 g/kg of Protect-It and 1.5 g/kg of DE S-1. The lowest weight of damaged grain was found after applying 1.0 and 1.5 g/kg of DEs to all grain types, and the highest in rye and wheat treated with 0.5 g/kg DE S-1 and DE S-2, respectively. The highest DEs adherence of 83–95% was detected in wheat, and 87–92% in oats, and the lowest of 71–77% in rye and 59–73% in triticale. All DEs significantly reduced hectolitre mass of all grains, especially Protect-It, 3.6–8.8%. No negative effects of DEs were detected on moisture contents, and the contents of proteins and ashes in the grains. The changes were due to the activity of R. dominica.  相似文献

The cowpea weevil, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Col.: Bruchidae) is a cosmopolitan field-to-store pest ranked as the major post-harvest pest of cowpea in tropical regions. The cold tolerance of an insect species can vary as a result of abiotic features including food resources. In this study, C. maculatus larvae were fed with proline and trehalose (10, 20, and 40 mmol) treated cowpea seeds to determine the effects of these potential cryoprotectants on the supercooling (SCP) and cold hardiness of the upcoming adult beetles. The SCPs of the control, proline-fed and trehalose-fed adults non-significantly changed from −18.2 °C for the control to −17.2 °C for trehalose-fed adults. The cold hardiness (24 h at 0, -5.0, −7.5, −10.0, and −12.5 °C) of the adults was almost the same for control and treatments. Median lethal times (LT50; lethal time for 50% mortality) were 6.3, 6.0, and 5.4 h, respectively. Moreover, feeding the larvae with proline and trehalose-treated seeds did not affect the proline and trehalose contents of the adult beetles. Our results showed that C. maculatus could not tolerate subzero temperatures well above their SCP, indicating that this species might be a chill-susceptible insect.  相似文献
