Kinetic of CO2 absorption and carbamate formation in aqueous solutions of diethanolamine

The absorption rates of CO₂ into aqueous solutions of Diethanolamine (DEA) with varying concentrations from 0.2 to 4M and temperature range from 293 to 323 K were measured by using a laboratory stirred reactor. The CO₂ partial pressure was varied in a range that the reaction would occur in pseudo first order regime. Experimental data were analyzed and the kinetic parameters associated with the reaction were determined. The activation energy for the deprotonation of the intermediate zwitterion was estimated at about 11.4 kcal/mol. The contribution of carbamate formation to the overall absorbed CO₂ was experimentally evaluated and found to be of the order of 100%.     

Handwritten word recognition with character and inter-characterneural networks

An off-line handwritten word recognition system is described. Images of handwritten words are matched to lexicons of candidate strings. A word image is segmented into primitives. The best match between sequences of unions of primitives and a lexicon string is found using dynamic programming. Neural networks assign match scores between characters and segments. Two particularly unique features are that neural networks assign confidence that pairs of segments are compatible with character confidence assignments and that this confidence is integrated into the dynamic programming. Experimental results are provided on data from the U.S. Postal Service.     

A Unified Framework for Designing, Implementing and Visualizing Distributed Algorithms

We present a general method and a toolkit for designing, implementing and visualizing distributed algorithms. We make use of the high level encoding of distributed algorithms as graph rewriting systems. The result is a unified and simple framework for describing, implementing and visualizing a large family of distributed algorithms.     

Synthesis of some new 3-(2′-heterocyclicethyl)-2-methyl-3,4-dihydroquinazolin-4-one derivatives as antimicrobial agents

3-(2′-Chloroethyl)-2-methyl-3,4-dihydroquinazolin-4-one was reacted with acetylacetone, ethyl acetoacetate and diethylmalonate in the presence of sodium ethoxide to afford the alkylation products IV, V and VI , Compounds IV, V and VI were reacted with hydrazine hydrate, phenylhydrazine, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, urea and thiourea to yield 3-(2′-heterocyclicethyl)-2-methyl-3,4-dihydroquinazolin-4-one derivatives VII-XV . The structures of the synthesized compounds were elucidated by elemental analyses and spectroscopic (IR and XH-NMR) analyses. The prepared compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activities in comparison with tetracycline as a reference compound.     

Morphology development in polyethylene/polystyrene blends: the influence of processing conditions and interfacial modification

The influence of processing conditions and interfacial modification on the morphology evolution and the composition range within which fully co‐continuous high density polyethylene/polystyrene blend structures can exist during blending in a single screw extruder was studied. Blends ranging from pure A to pure B component, with and without compatibilizer, were prepared under two different shear rates. It was found that high shear rates displaced the breakdown–coalescence balance of the dispersed nodules to the side of coalescence, narrowing the percolation domain and the critical composition for full co‐continuity decreased with increasing shear rates. The addition of a tri‐block compatibilizer induced the percolation threshold of the polystyrene phase to begin at lower percentages of polyethylene but the phase inversion point did not change. Determination of water activities and osmotic and activity coefficients of the system NaCl–BaCl2–H2O at 298.15 K

The water activities of the mixed aqueous electrolyte NaCl–BaCl₂(aq) are measured at total molalities from 0.25 mol kg⁻¹ to about saturation for different ionic strength fractions (y) of NaCl with y=0.33,0.50,0.67. The results allow the deduction of osmotic coefficients. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the Zdanovskii, Stokes, and Robinson (ZSR), Kusik and Meissner (KM), Robinson and Stokes (RS), Lietzke and Stoughton (LSII), Reilly, Wood, and Robinson (RWR), and Pitzer models. From these measurements, the Pitzer mixing ionic parameters are determined and used to predict the solute activity coefficients in the mixture. The excess Gibbs energy is also determined.
