Feature detection in 3-d medical images using shape information

Three methods for identifying the left ventricular apex in 3-D medical images of the heart called gated blood pool tomograms were investigated. The first method assumed a known orientation and positioning of the entire blood pool. The second and third methods used shapes described by quadratic surfaces, which are invariant to position and orientation. The first method performed best when the blood pool was accurately oriented, but as expected, could not handle blood pools in the wrong orientations. The quadratic surface methods performed well whether or not the blood pool was accurately oriented. The best quadratic surface method predicted the x, y, z value of the apex with correlations of 0.97, 0.98, 0.99.     

Dietary stearic acid and risk of cardiovascular disease: Intake,sources, digestion,and absorption

Individual FA have diverse biological effects, some of which affect the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In the context of food-based dietary guidance designed to reduce CVD risk, fat and FA recommendations focus on reducing saturated FA (SFA) and trans FA (TFA), and ensuring an adequate intake of unsaturated FA. Because stearic acid shares many physical properties with the other long-chain SFA but has different physiological effects, it is being evaluated as a substitute for TFA in food manufacturing. For stearic acid to become the primary replacement for TFA, it is essential that its physical properties and biological effects be well understood.     

Accurate coupling coefficients for fiber couplers with weakly fused cross sections

For fused tapered fiber couplers with weakly fused cross sections, power coupling takes place between two touching tapered cladding cylinders embedded in the air, and the cylinders then become a strongly guiding structure. We provide accurate polarization-dependent coupling coefficients for such a structure, on the basis of a rigorous vectorial numerical calculation. Our results for the corresponding weakly guiding structure are compared with previous vector perturbation methods base on scalar fields. It is found that the scalar theories are not applicable to those cases with large normalized frequencies or with small fiber separations when the polarization-splitting effect is concerned.     

Range of validity of the Rayleigh-Debye-Gans theory for optics of fractal aggregates

The range of validity of the Rayleigh-Debye-Gans approximation for the optical cross sections of fractal aggregates (RDG-FA) that are formed by uniform small particles was evaluated in comparison with the integral equation formulation for scattering (IEFS), which accounts for the effects of multiple scattering and self-interaction. Numerical simulations were performed to create aggregates that exhibit mass fractallike characteristics with a wide range of particle and aggregate sizes and morphologies, including x(p) = 0.01-1.0, ‖m - 1‖ = 0.1-2.0, N = 16-256, and D(f) = 1.0-3.0. The percent differences between both scattering theories were presented as error contour charts in the ‖m - 1‖x(p) domains for various size aggregates, emphasizing fractal properties representative of diffusion-limited cluster-cluster aggregation. These charts conveniently identified the regions in which the differences were less than 10%, between 10% and 30%, and more than 30% for easy to use general guidelines for suitability of the RDG-FA theory in any scattering applications of interest, such as laser-based particulate diagnostics. Various types of aggregate geometry ranging from straight chains (D(f) ≈ 1.0) to compact clusters (D(f) ≈ 3.0) were also considered for generalization of the findings. For the present computational conditions, the RDG-FA theory yielded accurate predictions to within 10% for ‖m - 1‖ to approximately 1 or more as long as the primary particles in aggregates were within the Rayleigh scattering limit (x(p) ≤ 0.3). Additionally, the effect of fractal dimension on the performance of the RDG-FA was generally found to be insignificant. The results suggested that the RDG-FA theory is a reasonable approximation for optics of a wide range of fractal aggregates, considerably extending its domain of applicability.     

An economical piezoelectric phase modulator for fiber optic sensors

A homemade piezoelectric phase modulator for interfero-metric fiber optic sensors was fabricated using piezoelectric buzzers as strain elements. Six piezoelectric elements were embedded between the two halves of a bakelite cylinder split along its axis and secured tightly together again to form a cylinder. Single-mode optical fiber was then wound around the cylinder to complete the unit. Up to a frequency of 500 Hz, the phase shift produced by the modulator is linearly proportional to the amplitude of the applied voltage. The sensitivity of the phase modulator is about 3.6 rad/V and has a dynamic range of 1,000 rad, which is sufficient for most phase modulation purposes.
