Phytotoxicity and heavy metals speciation of stabilised sewage sludges   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
The presence of heavy metals in the sludges produced in wastewater treatment restricts plants growth and hence their use for agricultural purposes. This study looks at different types of sludges (aerobic, anaerobic, unstabilised and sludge from a waste stabilisation pond) and compares the distribution of the heavy metals that they contain according to the treatment that they have undergone. The sewage sludges were subjected to chemical characterisation and phytotoxicity testing (in absence of substrate) to provide a preliminary assessment of their suitability for land application. In addition, the total quantity of metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ca, K, Fe, Mg, Ni, Na, Pb and Zn) was determined. The Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) method for heavy metal speciation was followed. It was confirmed that the total concentration of heavy metals did not exceed the limits set out by European legislation and that the stabilisation treatment undergone by the sludges strongly influenced the heavy metal distribution and the phases to which they were associated. The sludge extracts did not exert any significant adverse effect on the relative seed germination (RSG) of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) or cress (Lepidium sativum L.), although the reduction in germination index (GI) indicates that some characteristics existed did have an adverse effect on root growth.  相似文献

The use of magnetic nanoparticles in the development of ultra-high-density recording media is the subject of intense research. Much of the attention of this research is devoted to the stability of magnetic moments, often neglecting the influence of dipolar interactions. Here, we explore the magnetic microstructure of different assemblies of monodisperse cobalt single-domain nanoparticles by magnetic force microscopy and magnetometric measurements. We observe that when the density of particles per unit area is higher than a determined threshold, the two-dimensional self-assemblies behave as a continuous ferromagnetic thin film. Correlated areas (similar to domains) of parallel magnetization roughly ten particles in diameter appear. As this magnetic percolation is mediated by dipolar interactions, the magnetic microstructure, its distribution and stability, is strongly dependent on the topological distribution of the dipoles. Thus, the magnetic structures of three-dimensional assemblies are magnetically soft, and an evolution of the magnetic microstructure is observed with consecutive scans of the microscope tip.  相似文献

Titanium implants and BMP-7 in bone: an experimental model in the rabbit   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This study evaluates the effect of rhBMP-7/OP-1 on the osseointegration of commercially pure titanium implants in an experimental implant model in rabbits. Threaded titanium implants with two transverse parallel canals were inserted in the femur and tibia of rabbits. The canals were filled with, 10 g of BMP-7/collagen carrier, pure collagen carrier or were left empty as a control. The stiffness of the implant fixation was evaluated by Resonance Frequency Analysis (RFA) at baseline and four weeks postoperativly. Percentage of bone ingrowth in the canals was measured on microradiographs. Histomorphometry along the threaded part of the implants was performed on 15 m thin sections. The results from the RFA demonstrated a higher mean value for the BMP-7 treated implants in the tibia than the carrier treated implants but not compared to the control implants. The control implants in the tibia demonstrated more bone ingrowth in the upper canal than to the carrier or the BMP-7 treated implants. Apart from these differences there were no significant effects of BMP. In this study BMP-7 did not contribute to any substantially improved bone anchorage of titanium implants.  相似文献

The independent and cumulative measured yields of residual products in thin lead and bismuth targets irradiated with 0.04-2.6 GeV protons are compared with results by the LAHET, CEM03, LAQGSM03, INCL+ABLA, CASCADE and YIELDX codes, in order to evaluate the predictive power of the codes in this energy region. We found that the predictive power of the tested codes is different but is satisfactory for most of the nuclides in the spallation region, though none of the codes agree well with the data in the whole-mass region of product nuclides and all should be improved further. On the whole, the predictive power of all codes for the data in the fission and fragmentation product regions and, especially, at the borders between spallation and fission and between fission and fragmentation regions is much worse than in the spallation region; therefore, development of better evaporation/fission/fragmentation models is of first priority.  相似文献

We used atomic force microscopy (AFM) to characterize the plasma membrane of Xenopus laevis oocytes. The samples were prepared according to novel protocols, which allowed the investigation of the extra- and intracellular sides of the membrane, both of which showed sparsely distributed spherical-like protrusions. Regions with comparably sized and densely packed structures arranged in an orderly manner were visualized and dimensionally characterized. In particular, two different arrangements, hexagonal and square packing, were recognizable in ordered regions. The lateral dimension of structures visualized on the external side had a normal distribution centered on 25.5 +/- 0.3 nm (mean value +/- SE), whereas that on the intracellular side showed a normal distribution centered on 30.2 +/- 0.8 nm. The height of the protrusions was 2-5 nm on the external side and 1-3 nm on the intracellular side. The mean number of structures on the external and intracellular sides of the plasma membrane was about 1000 microm(-2) and 850 microm(-2) respectively. Trypsin treatment greatly decreased the size of the membrane protrusions, thus confirming the proteic nature of the structures. These results show that AFM is a useful tool for structural characterization of proteins in a native eukaryotic membrane.  相似文献
