Synthesis of amphiphilic magnetic microspheres by dispersion copolymerization of styrene and poly(ethylene oxide) macromonomer

Amphiphilic magnetic microspheres ranging in diameter from 5 to 100 µm were prepared by dispersion copolymerization of styrene and poly(ethylene oxide) vinylbenzyl (PEO‐VB) macromonomer (MPEO) in the presence of Fe₃O₄ magnetic fluid. The effects of various polymerization parameters on the average particle size were systematically investigated. The average particle size was found to increase with increasing styrene concentration and initiator concentration. It also increased with decreasing stabilizer concentration and molecular weight of MPEO. The content of the hydroxyl groups localized in the microspheres ranged from 0.01 to 0.2 mmol g^?1. © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry

The Solutions for Adjustment and Reconstruction of Water-Drive Surface Systems in the Old Areas of Daqing Oilfield

Influence of ethyl methacrylate content on the volume‐phase transition of temperature‐sensitive poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐(ethyl methacrylate)] microgels

A novel series of temperature‐sensitive poly[(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐co‐(ethyl methacrylate)] (p(NIPAM‐co‐EMA)) microgels was prepared by the surfactant‐free radical polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) with ethyl methacrylate (EMA). The shape, size dispersity and volume‐phase transition behavior of the microgels were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The transmission electron micrographs and DLS results showed that microgels with narrow distributions were prepared. It was shown from UV–Vis, DLS and DSC measurements that the volume‐phase transition temperature (VPTT) of the p(NIPAM‐co‐EMA) microgels decreased with increasing incorporation of EMA, but the temperature‐sensitivity was impaired when more EMA was incorporated, causing the volume‐phase transition of the microgels to become more continuous. It is noteworthy that incorporation of moderate amounts of EMA could not only lower the VPTT but also enhance the temperature‐sensitivity of the microgels. The reason for this phenomenon could be attributed to changes in the complicated interactions between the various molecules. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry

Brazzein, a new high-potency thermostable sweet protein from Pentadiplandra brazzeana B

We have discovered a new high-potency thermostable sweet protein, which we name brazzein, in a wild African plant Pentadiplandra brazzeana Baillon. Brazzein is 2,000 times sweeter than sucrose in comparison to 2% sucrose aqueous solution and 500 times in comparison to 10% of the sugar. Its taste is more similar to sucrose than that of thaumatin. Its sweetness is not destroyed by 80 degrees C for 4 h. Brazzein is comprised of 54 amino acid residues, corresponding to a molecular mass of 6,473 Da.     

An inhibitor of DNA topoisomerase I from Xenopus laevis ovaries

A novel, heat-resistant and Pronase-sensitive, inhibitor of eukaryotic DNA topoisomerase I has been purified from Xenopus laevis ovaries. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) of the most purified fraction revealed three bands with apparent molecular masses of 25, 28.5, and 33.5 kDa. The 25- and 33.5-kDa peptides recovered from an SDS-PAGE gel inhibited X. laevis DNA topoisomerase I. The purified inhibitor was specific to DNA topoisomerase I and did not inhibit other DNA enzymes tested. The inhibitor blocked the catalytic activity of DNA topoisomerase I by interacting with the enzyme, rather than by competing for binding sites on substrate DNA. Binding of DNA topoisomerase I to substrate DNA was blocked by the inhibitor, as was the cleavage reaction catalyzed by DNA topoisomerase I. Inhibition of DNA topoisomerase I was relieved by divalent cations Ca2+, Mg2+, or Mn2+.     

Cost Effective VLSI Architectures for Full-Search Block-Matching Motion Estimation Algorithm

In this paper, we present efficient VLSI architectures for full-search block-matching motion estimation (BMME) algorithm. Given a search range, we partition it into sub-search arrays called tiles. By fully exploiting data dependency within a tile, efficient VLSI architectures can be obtained. Using the proposed VLSI architectures, all the block-matchings in a tile can be processed in parallel. All the tiles within a search range can be processed serially or concurrently depending on various requirements. With the consideration of processing speed, hardware cost, and I/O bandwidth, the optimal tile size for a specific video application is analyzed. By partitioning a search range into tiles with appropriate size, flexible VLSI designs with different throughput can be obtained. In this way, cost effective VLSI designs for a wide range of video applications, from H.261 to HDTV, can be achieved.
