United States federal law requires that states operate programs to address non-point source pollution. Forestry non-point source programs vary among states in their approach. Some states have laws that prescribe mandatory practices to control pollution, whereas other states use voluntary approaches of Best Management Practices (BMPs) and education and outreach programs. States routinely monitor the extent of BMP implementation so as to improve educational programs and thus improve implementation. Many states also have conducted studies to assess whether BMPs are effective in protecting water quality. A growing body of literature strongly suggests that properly implemented BMPs do protect water quality. A variety of private efforts, ranging from forestry certification systems to research support, are improving BMP implementation and effectiveness. BMPs developed for conventional forestry should be applicable to bioenergy systems. Bioenergy systems may include more frequent fertilization than conventional forestry, so managers must ensure that existing BMPs on fertilization and riparian management zones be fully implemented. Bioenergy systems using short-rotation woody crops will need careful implementation of BMPs for permanent roads and stream crossings.  相似文献

Material research in tissue engineering forms a vital link between basic cell research and animal research. Periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs, P) from the tooth have an osteogenic effect, whereas endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs, E) assist in neovascularization. In the present study, the interaction of PDLCs and EPCs with Tantalum (Ta, I) discs, either alone (IP or IE group) or in 1:1 (IPE) ratio was explored. Additionally, surface analysis of Ta discs with respect to different types and cycles of sterilization and disinfection procedures was evaluated. It was observed that Ta discs could be used for a maximum of three times, after which the changes in properties of Ta discs were detrimental to cell growth, irrespective of the type of the protocol. Cell-Disc’s analysis revealed that cell proliferation in the IE group at day 6 and day 10 was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than other groups. A cell viability assay revealed increased live cells in the IPE group than in the IP or IE group. Similarly, adhesion and penetration of cells in the IPE group were not only higher, but also had an increased thickness of cellular extensions. RT-PCR analysis revealed that on day 8, both osteogenic (ALP, RUNX-2, and BSP) and angiogenic genes (VEGFR-2, CD31) increased significantly in the IPE group as compared to the IP or IE groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, Ta discs promoted cellular proliferation and increased osteogenic and angiogenic activity by augmenting RUNX-2 and VEGFR-2 activity.  相似文献

Accounting for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the production stage of a bioenergy crop is essential for evaluating its eco-efficiency. The objective of this study was to calculate the change in GHG emissions for canola (Brassica napus L.) production on the Canadian Prairies from 1986 to 2006. Net GHG emissions in the sub-humid and semi-arid climatic zones were estimated for fallow-seeded and stubble-seeded canola in intensive-, reduced- and no-tillage systems, with consideration given to emissions associated with synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizer input, mineralized N from crop residues, N leaching and volatilization, farm operations, the manufacturing and transportation of fertilizer, agrochemicals and farm machinery, and emission and removal of CO2 associated with changes in land use (LUC) and land management (LMC). The GHG emissions on an area basis were higher in stubble-seeded canola than in fallow-seeded canola but, the opposite was true on a grain dry matter (DM) basis. Nitrous oxide emissions associated with canola production, CO2 emissions associated with farm energy use and the manufacturing of synthetic N fertilizer and its transportation contributed 49% of the GHG emissions in 1986 which increased to 66% in 2006. Average CO2 emissions due to LUC decreased from 27% of total GHG emissions in 1986 to 8% in 2006 and soil C sequestration due to LMC increased from 8% to 37%, respectively. These changes caused a reduction in net GHG emission intensities of 40% on an area basis and of 65% on a grain DM basis. Despite the reduction in GHG emission intensities, GHG emissions associated with canola in the Prairies increased from 3.4 Tg CO2 equiv in 1986 to 3.8 Tg CO2 equiv in 2006 because of the more than doubling of canola production.  相似文献

In the early 1990s, herring gulls (Larus argentatus) were collected in 15 breeding colonies throughout the Great Lakes basin and in two reference colonies on Lake Winnipeg and the Bay of Fundy. Organochlorine and metal concentrations, and stable isotope ratios (15N/14N and 13C/12C) were measured in their tissues, and we qualitatively assessed their diet. Breast muscle δ15N suggested that adults fed on planctivorous or insectivorous fish at six colonies, on piscivorous fish at four, and at a lower trophic level at the remaining three. The concentrations of Co, Ni, Al, Cr, Sn, Fe, and Pb in kidneys of adults suggested anthropogenic enrichment in the Great Lakes basin. Concentrations of contaminants were highest most often in tissues of gulls from Lake Ontario and northern Lake Michigan colonies. Concentrations of Pb in adults from Hamilton Harbour and the Detroit River, and of Se in adults from the southern Lake Huron colony, were similar to published toxicity thresholds. Tissue levels of Cd have increased, while those of Pb have decreased markedly since 1983. DDE, dieldrin, mirex, and ΣPCB concentrations in livers collected from nine of these colonies revealed declines of 16 to 87% at most locations since the early 1980s. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin equivalents were highest in adults from the offshore colonies in western Lake Erie and northern Lake Michigan, where gulls feed on piscivorous fish, and were driven by non-ortho PCBs. There was evidence of an unusually high bioavailablity of organochlorines, especially dieldrin, near the northern Lake Michigan colony during the period of chick growth, and of an ongoing loading of mercury to eastern Lake Ontario. Tissues of adult gulls from colonies on Lakes Ontario, Erie, and Michigan best reflect local conditions whereas those from Lake Superior and northern Lake Huron reflect contaminants accumulated from time spent on the lower lakes.  相似文献

Regional mapping of gross light-use efficiency using MODIS spectral indices   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Direct estimation of photosynthetic light-use efficiency (LUE) from space would be of significant benefit to LUE-based models which use inputs from remote sensing to estimate terrestrial productivity. The Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI) has shown promise in tracking LUE at the leaf- to small canopy levels, but its use at regional to global scales still remains a challenge. In this study, we used different formulations of PRI calculated from the MODIS ocean band centered at 531 nm and a set of alternative reference bands at 488, 551, and 678 nm to explore the relationship between PRI and LUE where LUE was measured at eight eddy covariance flux towers located in the boreal forest of Saskatchewan, Canada. The magnitude and variability of LUE was significantly lower at the times when useful MODIS ocean band images were available (i.e. around midday under clear-sky conditions) relative to the rest of the growing season. PRI678 (reference band at 678 nm) showed the strongest relationship (r2 = 0.70) with LUE90a (i.e. 90-minute mean LUE calculated using Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation, APAR), but only when all sites were combined. Overall, the relationships between the MODIS PRIs and LUE90a were always stronger for observations closer to the backscatter direction and there were no significant differences in the strength of the correlations whether LUE was calculated based on incident PAR or on APAR. Predictions of ecosystem photosynthesis at the time of the MODIS overpasses were significantly improved by multiplying either PAR or APAR by MODIS PRI (r2 improved from 0.09 to 0.44 and 0.54 depending on the PRI formulation).We used our PRI-LUE model to create a regional LUE90a map for the three cover types covering 47,500 km2 around the flux sites. The MODIS PRI-derived LUE90a map appeared to capture more realistic spatial heterogeneity of LUE across the landscape compared to a daily LUE map derived using the look-up table in the MODIS GPP (MOD17) algorithm. While our LUE map is only a snapshot of minimum regional LUE90a values, with appropriate gap-filling methods it could be used to improve regional-scale monitoring of GPP. Moreover, the strong relationship between midday and daily LUE on clear days (r2 = 0.93) indicates that instantaneous MODIS observations of LUE90a could be used to estimate daily LUE. Finally, pixel shadow fraction from the 5-Scale geometric-optical model was closely related to both MODIS PRI and tower-derived LUE suggesting that differences in stand leaf area and in diffuse illumination among flux sites play a role in the relationship we observed between LUE and MODIS PRI.  相似文献

This paper estimates the availability of agricultural crop residue feedstocks in Canada for cellulosic ethanol production. Canada's major field crops generate 100.6 million dry mega grams (Mg) of crops per year while non-forage crops produce 67 million dry Mg, leaving abundant agricultural residues for use as second generation feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production. This study used crop production and livestock data from Statistics Canada for a 10-year period (2001–2010), as well as tillage data from Statistics Canada census years 2001 and 2006, to estimate crop residue availability by province and soil zone. Total residue yield from crops is calculated by incorporating straw to grain ratios. Total agricultural residues available for ethanol production are computed by deducting soil conservation and livestock uses. An average of 48 million dry Mg of agricultural residues is available per year, with a minimum of 24.5 million dry Mg in drought year 2002. This implies an average yearly potential ethanol production of 13 billion litres from crop residues over the 2001–2010 period, with a minimum of 6.6 billion litres in 2002. Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec have enough agricultural residue supply to set up ethanol plants using agricultural crop residues as primary lignocellulosic feedstocks. There is great variability in agricultural residue production between the provinces and by soil zone. Understanding variability in feedstock supply is important for the economics and operational planning of a cellulosic ethanol biorefinery. Factors such as residue yield per hectare and soil zone will influence cellulosic ethanol plant establishment in order to exploit the abundance of lignocellulosic biomass for an ethanol plant.  相似文献

Impaired locomotion (lameness) may negatively affect the ability and desire of cows to milk voluntarily, which is a key factor in success of automated milking systems (AMS). The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with herd-level lameness prevalence and associations of lameness and other farm-level factors with milking activity, milk yield, and milk quality in herds with AMS. From April to September 2019, 75 herds with AMS in Ontario, Canada, were visited, and data on barn design and farm management practices were collected. Data from AMS were collected, along with milk recording data, for the 6-mo period before farm visits. Farms averaged 98 ± 71 lactating cows, 2.3 ± 1.5 robot units/farm, 43.6 ± 9.4 cows/robot, 36.4 ± 4.9 kg/d of milk, a milking frequency of 3.01 ± 0.33 milkings/d, and a herd average geometric mean SCC of 179.3 ± 74.6 (× 1,000) cells/mL. Thirty percent of cows/farm (minimum of 30 cows/farm) were scored for body condition (1 = underconditioned to 5 = over conditioned) and locomotion (1 = sound to 5 = lame; clinically lame ≥3 out of 5 = 28.3 ± 11.7%, and severely lame ≥4 out of 5 = 3.0 ± 3.2%). Clinical lameness (locomotion score ≥3) was less prevalent on farms with sand bedding, with increased feed bunk space per cow, and on farms with non-Holstein breeds versus Holsteins, and tended to be less prevalent with lesser proportion of underconditioned cows (with body condition score ≤2.5). Severe lameness occurrence (farms with any cows with locomotion score ≥4) was associated with a greater proportion of underconditioned cows and in farms with stalls with greater curb heights. Herd average milk yield/cow per day increased with lesser prevalence of clinical lameness (each 10-percentage-point decrease in clinical lameness prevalence was associated with 2.0 kg/cow per day greater milk yield) and greater milking visit frequency per day, and tended to be greater with increased feed push-up frequency. Lesser herd average somatic cell count was associated with lesser clinical lameness prevalence, herd average days in milk, and proportion of overconditioned cows, and somatic cell count tended to be lesser for farms with sand bedding versus those with organic bedding substrates. The results highlight the importance of minimizing lameness prevalence, using of sand bedding, ensuring adequate feed access and feed bunk space, and maintaining proper cow body condition to optimize herd-level productivity and milk quality in AMS herds.  相似文献

A series of arsenate substituted hydroxyapatite was directly prepared through aqueous precipitation method. Characterization studies from elemental analysis, XRD, FT-IR spectra and SEM have confirmed the forming of the arsenate/phosphate hydroxyapatite solid solutions. The XRD analysis indicated that the unit cell a and c parameters did not vary smoothly with the degree of substitution as expected by the Vegard's Law. The solids with As/(P + As) = 0.46–1.0 were typically needle-like crystals; those with As/(P + As) = 0–0.46 large tabular. In FT-IR spectra, the area of the phosphate peak was gradually suppressed and that of the arsenate peak increased as the proportion of the arsenate increased.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to benchmark the herd-level housing and management strategies of automated milking system (AMS) farms across Canada and assess the associations of these herd-level housing factors and management practices with milk production and quality. Canadian AMS farms (n = 197; Western Canada: n = 50, Ontario: n = 77, Quebec: n = 59, Atlantic Canada: n = 11) were each visited once from April to September 2019, and details were collected related to barn design and herd management practices. Milk-recording data for the 6 mo before farm visits were collected. Farms averaged (± standard deviation) 110 ± 102 lactating cows, 2.4 ± 1.9 AMS units/farm, 47.5 ± 14.9 cows/AMS, 36.7 ± 5.0 kg/d of milk, 4.13 ± 0.34% fat, 3.40 ± 0.16% protein, and a herd-average somatic cell count of 186,400 ± 80,800 cells/mL. Farms mainly used freestall housing systems (92.5%), organic bedding substrates (73.6%), and free flow cow traffic systems (87.8%); farms predominantly milked Holsteins (90.4%). Multivariable regression models were used to associate herd-level housing factors and management practices with milk production and quality. At the herd level, feed push-up frequency (mean = 12.8 ± 8.3 times per day) and feed bunk space (mean = 64 ± 21.5 cm/cow) were positively associated with milk yield. Greater milk yield was associated with herds using inorganic (sand) versus organic bedding, milking Holsteins versus non-Holsteins, and using a form of mechanical ventilation versus natural ventilation alone. Milk fat and milk protein content were only associated with breed. Herds with lower somatic cell counts had more frequent alley cleaning (mean = 12.1 ± 7.5 times per day), wider lying alleys (mean = 304.5 ± 40.0 cm), and sand bedding. The results highlight the importance of using sand bedding, using mechanical ventilation, keeping feed pushed up, ensuring alleys are clean, and ensuring adequate space at the feed bunk for maintaining herd-level productivity and milk quality in farms with AMS.  相似文献
