Earlier studies conducted in the use of sealed tubes with polyalkylene glycol lubricants and polyethylene terephthalete (PET) films revealed that the PET films exhibited embrittlement and (visual) degradation. This led to an investigation of PET embrittlement mechanisms with the new lubricants used with HFC 134a. The lubricants studied were three polypropylene glycols (the monol, the diol and the completely end-capped glycols), pentaerythritol ester and a blend of monol and ester. The effects of moisture content, temperature and lubricant structure were studied. All lubricants in this study were of viscosity grade ISO-32 (150 SUS). The results were compared to PET film embrittlement in the presence of CFC 12 and mineral oil. This study reconfirmed the earlier findings that the PET films must be dried to lower than 0.1 wt.% moisture content for use in hermetic systems. This paper discusses the effect of the moisture content of the lubricant and the effect of the lubricant structure on PET films. The dependence of the various mechanisms on temperature is shown. Esters and end-capped polyalkylene glycols are recommended for use with HFC 134a.  相似文献

Failure analysis and a study of the wear mechanism were performed on a heavily loaded carburized gear with some unusual features. The analysis showed that the different failure forms on the tooth surface of the gear were dependent on the sub-surface shearing stress, the lubrication conditions and the surface roughness. Delaminations formed on the addendum surface were the main reason for the gear failure. A suggestion for improvement has been tried, and a desirable result has been obtained.  相似文献

Glycol diesters and mixtures of mono- and diesters have been prepared from methyl esters of partially hydrogenated soybean oil fatty acids and diethylene, dipropylene, neopentyl and triethylene glycols. The catalyst used in these reactions was a mixture of calcium acetate/barium acetate (3∶1, w/w). The reactions were carried out under nitrogen with 0.5% catalyst at temperatures in the range of 190–275°C. Borated esters of mixed mono- and diesters were prepared with 0.33 equivalent of boric acid per 1.0 equivalent hydroxyl group on the ester. Refractive indices, viscosities, and flash and fire points were determined for diesters, mixed mono- and diesters, and mixed diesters and borated esters. The viscosities, flash points and fire points indicate that these esters can be used as a component of lubricating oils. Wear-prevention characteristics of mixed diesters and borated esters indicated that they can be used as antifriction additives in lubricating oils. In a galvanizing process a continuous sheet of steel is passed through a bath of molten zinc around a series of rotating rollers. One or more of these rollers are submerged in the bath of molten zinc and are supported by journal bearings that are lubricated with molten zinc. Dynamic characteristics of these bearings influence the quality of the finished galvanized sheet and also determine the production speed. This work presents a theoretical study of these bearings in terms of the damping, stiffness, and inertia coefficients of the film of molten zinc separating the journal from the bearings. This work also addresses the influence of turbulence on the bearing dynamics. The damping, stiffness, and inertia coefficients of journal bearings lubricated with molten zinc are determined for different zinc alloys at 450,650, and 850 °F.  相似文献

440C steel thrust ball bearing races lubricated with 1 m thick sputtered films of MoS2 were tested in the unidirectional and oscillatory modes against bare steel balls in moderate (10–4–10–5 Pa 10–6–10–7 Torr) vacuum and in 1 atmosphere of 99.999% pure ( 1 ppm water) N2 in the same unbaked environmental chamber. Over 90% of the residual gases in the chamber vacuum consisted of H2O vapor. The bearings operated in N2 showed substantially longer lives compared to the specimens tested in vacuum. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) tribometry was also performed on an MoS2 film powder-burnished onto a 440C flat. This flat was repeatedly oscillated against bare, hemispherical-tipped 440C pins on fresh wear tracks in the same type of N2 and column vacuum of ~10–3 Pa 10–5 Torr itself containing over 90% residual H2O. The SEM-generated results on the burnished film confirmed the same, atmosphere-dependent difference in wear life observed with the sputtered layers. Varying the moisture content of the burnished flat and its immediate environment by cryosorption predictably manipulated the coefficient of friction and wear life of MoS2. The various possible causes of this perplexing phenomenon are reviewed, and a plausible hypothesis is offered attributing the unexpected wear life reduction to the physico-chemical consequences of residual H2O hydrogen-bonding to the oxidized and/or hydrated edge and basal plane sites of MoS2 in moderate vacuum. The site-specific sorption of water is severely hindered in 1 atm N2 by the gas molecules disrupting the H-bonding mechanism.  相似文献

A 1-D modified Reynolds equation for power-law fluid is derived from the viscous adsorption theory for thin film elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TFEHL). The lubricating film between solid surfaces is modeled as three fixed layers, which are two adsorption layers on each surface and a middle layer between them. The comparisons between classical non-Newtonian EHL and non-Newtonian TFEHL are discussed. Results show that the TFEHL model can reasonably calculate the pressure distribution, the film thickness, the velocity distribution and the average viscosity. The thickness and viscosity of the adsorption layer and the flow index influence the lubrication characteristics of the contact conjunction significantly. The film thickness increases with the increase of flow index. As the flow index becomes greater, the dimple in the film shape moves towards the center of the contacts. The effect of flow index produces an obvious difference in the pressure distribution. The greater the flow index, the greater the pressure spike, and the pressure spike tends to move toward the center. The larger the flow index, the more the velocity varies in both the middle layer and adsorption layers along the Z-axis. The greater the thickness and viscosity of the adsorption layer and the flow index, the greater the deviation in central film thickness versus speed between EHL model and TFEHL model produced in the very thin film regime.  相似文献

Spark-plasma sintering is employed to synthesize self-lubricating ZrO2(Y2O3) matrix composites with different additives of CaF2 and Ag as solid lubricants by tailoring the composition and by adjusting the sintering temperature. The friction and wear behavior of ZrO2(Y2O3) matrix composites have been investigated in dry sliding against an alumina ball from room temperature to 800 °C. The effective self-lubrication at different temperatures depends mainly on the content of various solid lubricants in the composites. The addition of 35 wt.% Ag and 30 wt.% CaF2 in the ZrO2(Y2O3) matrix can promote the formation of a well-covered lubricating film, and effectively reduce the friction and wear over the entire temperature range studied. The friction coefficients at low temperatures were at a minimum value for the composite containing 35 wt.% of silver. At this silver concentration, low and intermediate temperature lubricating properties are greatly improved without affecting high-temperature lubrication by the calcium fluoride in ZrO2(Y2O3) matrix composites. The worn surfaces and transfer films formed during wear process have been characterized to identify the synergistic lubrication behavior of CaF2 and Ag lubricants at different temperatures.  相似文献

Wear resistant solid lubricant coating made from PTFE and epoxy   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A composite coating of polytetrafluoroethylene and epoxy shows 100 × improvements in wear resistance as compared to either of its constituents alone and reduced friction coefficient under testing on a pin-on-disk tribometer. This coating is made by impregnating an expanded PTFE film with epoxy, which provides three unique functions: (1) the epoxy compartmentalizes the PTFE nodes, which is believed to reduce the wear of the PTFE, (2) the epoxy increases the mechanical properties such as elastic modulus and hardness, and (3) the epoxy provides a ready interface to bond the films onto a wide variety of substrates easily and securely. The experimental matrix had normal loads of 1–3 N, sliding speeds from 0.25 to 2.5 m/s, and used a 2.4 mm radius low carbon steel pin in a rotating pin-on-disk tribometer. The skived PTFE films had wear rates on the order of K=10–3 mm3/Nm and friction coefficients around =0.2. Both the high density films (70 wt%PTFE) and low density films (50 wt% PTFE) had wear rates on the order of K=10–6 mm3/Nm and friction coefficients around =0.15. The neat epoxy films showed significant scatter in the tribological measurements with wear-rates on the order of K=10–4 mm3/Nm and friction coefficients around =0.40. The enhanced tribological behavior of these composites is believed to stem from the coatings ability to draw thin PTFE transfer films into the contact from the nodes of PTFE, which act like reservoirs. Nanoindentation mapping of the coatings and the transfer films supports this hypothesis, and accompanies scanning electron microscopy observations of the worn and unworn coatings.  相似文献
