Predominant age-groups in the Lake Erie freshwater drum Aplodinotus grunniens population were 3, 4, and 5 as determined from gill net, trap net, bottom trawl, and midwater trawl samples. Age and growth calculations indicated that females grew faster than males. However, the length-weight relation did not differ between sexes and was described by the equation: log W = ?5.4383 + 3.1987 log L. Some males became sexually mature at age 2 and all were mature by age 6. Females matured 1 year later than males. Three sizes of eggs were present in ovaries; the average total number was 127,000 per female for 20 females over a length range of 270 to 478 mm. Seasonal analysis of the ovary-body weight ratio indicated that spawning extended from June to August. A total annual mortality rate of 49% for drum aged 4 through 11 was derived from catch-curve analysis. Freshwater drum were widely distributed throughout Lake Erie in 1977–1979, the greatest concentration being in the western basin. They moved into warm, shallow water (less than 10 m deep) during summer, and returned to deeper water in late fall. Summer biomass estimates for the western basin, based on systematic surveys with bottom trawls, were 9,545 t in 1977 and 2,333 t in 1978.  相似文献

Lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis Mitchill), an important commercial species in the Laurentian Great Lakes, have experienced decreased growth and condition in regions of the upper Great Lakes over the past 20 years. Increases in lake whitefish density and decreases in the density of Diporeia spp., an energy rich and historically important part of the lake whitefish diet, have been implicated in the recent declines in lake whitefish growth and condition. The goal of this study was to describe lake whitefish fecundity, egg lipid content, and total ovary lipid content in selected regions of Lakes Huron, Michigan, and Superior in 1986–87 and 2003–05, two time periods with different lake whitefish and Diporeia densities. Under conditions of high lake whitefish density and low Diporeia density, female lake whitefish in the upper Laurentian Great Lakes generally produced fewer eggs. Egg lipid content was higher in 2003–05 than in 1986–87 at all sites, regardless of changes in lake whitefish or Diporeia densities. Total ovary lipid content and lake whitefish abundance were inversely related, while there was no significant relationship between total ovary lipid content and Diporeia density. The amount of energy that lake whitefish invested in egg production was more closely associated with lake whitefish abundance than with Diporeia density. This study provides evidence that recent changes in production dynamics of Great Lakes lake whitefish have not been driven solely by declines in Diporeia but have been significantly influenced by lake whitefish abundance.  相似文献

Silver butter catfish (Schilbe intermedius) is an indigenous fish species in Lake Victoria. It has a good economic value because of the quality and freshness of its flesh, increasing its demand for consumption. It is potamodromous, with its stock in the lake declining because of overexploitation by the use of illegal fishing gears at the river mouths on their way to spawning areas. Fish samples (321) were obtained from commercial gill net (1.5–3 in.) fishers within Nyanza gulf. The fish samples were weighed (g) and measured (cm), dissected and sex determined by visual inspection of the gonads. Ovaries for mature female fish specimens were preserved for analysis of fecundity. Fecundity was determined by the gravimetric technique. The mean (±SE) length and weight for all fish were 18.2 ± 0.2 cm TL and 51.9 ± 1.9 g, respectively. The female fish (20.0 ± 0.2 cm) were significantly (F = 199.80, p < .05) larger than the males (15.9 ± 0.1 cm). Similarly, the females (68.8 ± 2.6 g) were significantly (F = 152.61, p < .05) heavier than the males (30.93 ± 1.02 g). The overall sex ratio was 1.23:1.0 (female:male). The length frequency exhibited a unimodal distribution, with the modal class between 16 and 18 cm for either sex. The regression slope (b) of the length–weight relationship was 3.2, 3.1 and 3.0 for all fish, females and males. The absolute fecundity ranged from 6,510 to 59,818 eggs, with a mean of 34,473 eggs. The length at 50% maturity was estimated to be 16.0 cm (female) and 18.0 cm (male) fish. The mean length and size at maturity of S. intermedius have declined, likely attributable to fishing effects, changes in food resources, competition and predation. Thus, the present study provided relevant biological data of S. intermedius, which is currently limited for this region.  相似文献

The tomato leaf miner (Tuta absoluta) is one of the top 20 plant pests worldwide. We cloned and identified the chromatin-remodelling ATPase genes ISWI and BRM by RACE and bioinformatic analysis, respectively; used RT-qPCR to examine their expression patterns during different life cycle stages; and elucidated their roles in insect reproduction using double-stranded RNA injections. The full-length cDNA of TaISWI was 3428 bp and it encoded a 1025-aa polypeptide. The partial-length cDNA of TaBRM was 3457 bp and it encoded a 1030-aa polypeptide. TaISWI and TaBRM were upregulated at the egg stage. Injection of TaISWI or TaBRM dsRNA at the late pupa stage significantly inhibited adult ovary development and reduced fecundity, hatchability, and longevity in the adult females. To the best of our knowledge, the present study was the first to perform molecular characterisations of two chromatin-remodelling ATPase genes and clarify their roles in T. absoluta fecundity. Chromatin-remodelling ATPases are potential RNAi targets for the control of T. absoluta and other insect pests. The present study was also the first to demonstrate the feasibility of reproductive inhibitory RNAi as a putative approach for the suppression of T. absoluta and other Lepidopteran insect populations.  相似文献

Diadromus pulchellus, a monophagous parasitoid of the leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella, a specialist of plants in the Allium genus, was raised on four series of chrysalids coming from four diets: leek leaves (LL), an artificial diet with (D + L) or without (D – L) leek powder, and an artificial diet plus 1% methyl-cysteinesulfoxide, a precursor of characteristic sulfur volatiles (D + P). Various behavioral and physiological responses by the parent parasitoids and the progeny were studied. No differences were observed in behavior among the four series. The higher precursor concentration observed in LL and in D + P than in D + L and D – L was responsible for a lower emergence ratio and higher egg production in LL and D + P. The consequences of these variations are discussed in relation to narrowness of the tritrophic system. The fact that sulfur volatiles favorable to behavior arise from nonvolatile sulfur precursors, having negative effects on physiology, can also contribute to the maintenance of the system.  相似文献

Fecundity, mortality, and food consumption of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, were evaluated in response to five plant flavonoids (genistein, biochanin A, apigenin, quercetin, and glyceollin). Apigenin fed at 50 g/primary reproductive pair proved to be the most toxic flavonoid. Biochanin A was most effective in reducing fecundity. Subsequently, these two flavonoids were tested through oral feeding and topical application at 100-g dose. Significant reduction in the numbers of progeny was evident for biochanin A in both treatment methods. Choice feeding tests with termite workers showed that initially termites were attracted to filter paper treated with biochanin A, but over a period of 72 hr, consumed significantly less material when compared to controls. Biochanin A is a promising phytochemical with ability to reduce fecundity in primary reproductives of the Formosan subterranean termite, but it does not elicit phagostimulant activity.  相似文献

The study examined length–weight relationship, condition factor, size at 50% maturity and fecundity of Rastrineobola argentea in the Nyanza Gulf of Lake Victoria, Kenya. The 500 fish examined had a mean length of 39.4 ± 0.3 mm SL, ranging from 17 to 55 mm SL and weighed between 0.08 and 2.44 g. The length–frequency analysis indicated a unimodal distribution between 35 and 40 mm SL, with a modal length at 37 mm SL. The fish exhibited a positive allometric growth pattern (b = 3.4). The condition factor for all fish was 1.02. Male fish showed a decreasing trend in condition factor with increasing body length, while females exhibited an increasing trend. The length at 50% maturity was estimated at 43 and 44 mm SL for males and females, respectively. The smallest mature male was 41 mm SL and 42 mm SL for females, with 100% maturity already exhibited at 49 mm SL. Fecundity varied from 235 eggs for 33 mm SL to 2,309 eggs for 54 mm SL fish. positive linear relationships were found between fecundity against standard length and ovary weight. Comparisons with previous studies in this lake over time indicated a decrease in length at maturity and an increase in fecundity, which are strategies to maximize reproductive success. The findings of this study provide useful information for managing the fishery.  相似文献

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is an important agricultural pest worldwide. Uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) are one of the largest and most ubiquitous groups of proteins. Because of their role in detoxification, insect UGTs are attracting increasing attention. In this study, we identified and analyzed UGT genes in B. tabaci MEAM1 to investigate their potential roles in host adaptation and reproductive capacity. Based on phylogenetic and structural analyses, we identified 76 UGT genes in the B. tabaci MEAM1 genome. RNA-seq and real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) revealed differential expression patterns of these genes at different developmental stages and in association with four host plants (cabbage, cucumber, cotton and tomato). RNA interference results of selected UGTs showed that, when UGT352A1, UGT352B1, and UGT354A1 were respectively silenced by feeding on dsRNA, the fecundity of B. tabaci MEAM1 was reduced, suggesting that the expressions of these three UGT genes in this species may be associated with host-related fecundity. Together, our results provide detailed UGTs data in B. tabaci and help guide future studies on the mechanisms of host adaptation by B. tabaci.  相似文献

The plant hormone auxin acts as a mediator providing positional instructions in a range of developmental processes. Studies in Arabidopsis thaliana L. show that auxin acts in large part via activation of Auxin Response Factors (ARFs) that in turn regulate the expression of downstream genes. The rice (Oryza sativa L.) gene OsARF11 is of interest because of its expression in developing rice organs and its high sequence similarity with MONOPTEROS/ARF5, a gene with prominent roles in A. thaliana development. We have assessed the phenotype of homozygous insertion mutants in the OsARF11 gene and found that in relation to wildtype, osarf11 seedlings produced fewer and shorter roots as well as shorter and less wide leaves. Leaves developed fewer veins and larger areoles. Mature osarf11 plants had a reduced root system, fewer branches per panicle, fewer grains per panicle and fewer filled seeds. Mutants had a reduced sensitivity to auxin-mediated callus formation and inhibition of root elongation, and phenylboronic acid (PBA)-mediated inhibition of vein formation. Taken together, our results implicate OsARF11 in auxin-mediated growth of multiple organs and leaf veins. OsARF11 also appears to play a central role in the formation of lateral root, panicle branch, and grain meristems.  相似文献
