Extracted and unextracted black cherry (Prunus serotina), red oak (Quercus rubra), and red pine (Pinus resinosa) wood specimens were exposed to artificial weathering, and their discoloration process was investigated to obtain basic understanding on the role of wood extractives in the weathering of hardwoods and softwoods. Color measurements were made with a spectrometer according to ISO 2470 standards, using the CIELAB system. Results obtained showed that the rate of whiteness was not significantly affected by extractives removed with organic solvents, but were significantly affected when organic solvent extraction was followed by water extraction. The total discoloration rate had the same pattern, and chromaticity coordinates were less affected by wood extractives. These results confirm the hypothesis that some extractives contained in wood act as antioxidants and are able to provide some protection to wood surfaces against weathering degradation. However, more work is needed to understand the chemistry and mechanism of action of these extractives so as to develop any practical use for this property. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new color scale was developed from a broad data set of 1700 virgin olive oil samples over four crop seasons, which can be
considered highly representative of the whole color range of virgin olive oils available in Spain. This color scale provides
a new set of 60 color standards, improving the results achieved by the old 60-color standards proposed by the bromthymol blue
method. Seeking the greatest possibility of including a near match between colors of virgin olive oils and proposed standards,
we developed our new color scale using a recent uniform color space, with standards placed in a regular rhombohedral lattice
like the one employed by the Uniform Color Scales of the Optical Society of America. The average color difference between
each of the 1700 virgin olive oils and its nearest standard is reduced from 8.17 CIELAB units, using the bromthymol blue standards,
to 3.99 CIELAB units using the new standards. Within a color tolerance of 7.0 CIELAB units, 93.2% of our virgin olive oils
can be classified with the new standards, but only 59.1% with the bromthymol blue ones. In the interest of future adoption,
the performance of the new color standards should be tested by industry and researchers. 相似文献

The effect of pH on colour and iron content (Fe) of peptide fractions obtained from bovine haemoglobin concentrate (BHC) hydrolysates was studied. Four hydrolysates were obtained using three enzymes: Protex‐6‐L (P), Fungal–Protease–Concetrate (FC) and Flavourzyme (F). BHC and its hydrolysates (P, FC, P + F, FC + F) were fractioned at pH 4.5, 7.0 and 9.5. Solubility and Fe from different fractions were measured. Correlations between CIELAB colour parameters and Fe from different fractions were analysed. The colour from different fractions varied from red to yellow (a* and b* positives). Lightness values (L*) ranged from twenty‐four to seventy. FC4.5 and FC + F4.5 fractions were the clearest and yellow (higher L*, b*, h), while BHC9.5 and P + F9.5 fractions had the lowest values of L*, b* and h. There was an inverse linear relationship between b* and L* parameters and Fe from fractions. This relationship could be associated with the pH of extraction. As pH increases Fe significantly increases and lower b* and L* values were obtained. 相似文献

The roselle extract, using acidified water-95% ethanol (1:1) as a solvent, was subjected to freeze-drying. Maltodextrin and trehalose, 2 and 3 g/100 ml extract, were used as stabilisers. Addition of the stabiliser retarded anthocyanin degradation. Colour changes of the freeze-dried roselle powder during storage were monitored using the CIELAB system. It was found that pigment concentration markedly changed with a minor change in lightness and hue. However, the changes in chroma mainly came from anthocyanin degradation. The freeze-dried roselle powder with maltodextrin (3 g/100 ml) proved to have superior colour stability. A model system of a drink adding this powder was carried out and the colour evaluation was compared to drinks containing commercial colorants: SAN RED RC® and carmoesin. During a 12-week storage period at 30 °C, the change in hue of all three groups was within the same shade suggesting any change in pigment concentration had insignificant effect on hue shift. By contrast, the degradation of pigments highly correlated to changes in lightness and chroma. Even though a drink with roselle anthocyanin powder was the least stable in colour, the overall appearance of the drink was rated close to ‘like slightly’ throughout 56 days. 相似文献

A colour‐naming model was developed to categorize volumes for each of the 11 basic names in CIELAB colour space. This was tested with three different sets of data for two languages (English and Mandarin), derived from extensive colour categorization experiments. Cap color was characterized on a wide range of Agaricus bisporus strains. L, a and b tristimulus coordinates were tested by linear model analysis to determine color information related to each parameter. One model was retained: log(L/(100-L)) =α* H +β. Visual cap color variation was continuous and well described by log(L/(100-L)) or H parameters. In the wild, the range of color varied from white to dark brown which would enable mushroom breeding for cap color adapted to the market. 相似文献

Ninety‐six nylon pairs were prepared, including red, yellow, green, and blue standards, each at two lightness levels with CIE94 ΔE units ranging from 0.15 to 4.01. Visual assessments of acceptability were carried out by 21 females. Logistic regression compared visual results to four color‐difference equations, CIELAB, CMC, CIE94, and CIEDE2000. One of the major environmental problems in the textile dyeing industry is the removal of color from effluents. The present study deals with color removal from effluents using microemulsions. The wastewater used in this study was the reactive exhausted dye liquor from a dyeing house containing Procion Yellow H‐E4R (CI Reactive Yellow 84), Procion Blue H‐ERD (CI Reactive Blue 160) and Procion Red H‐E3B (CI Reactive Red 120). Color removal was determined by CIE L*a*b* (CIELAB) color space, CIE L*a*b* color difference, ΔE*ab, and absorbance. Color removal greater than 95% was achieved, attaining values lower than the consent requirements established by the Environmental Agency. It was observed that pH is an important parameter in color removal and effluent pH correction from 10.44 to 9 before extraction improved results. The results obtained were modeled using the Scheffé net method and evaluated through the construction of isoresponse diagrams by correlation graphics between experimental values and those obtained through use of model equations, providing an experimental error of less than 2%. The optimized method very efficiently removed all dyes contained in the effluent. The same microemulsion phase recovered after the extraction process can be used at least a further 14 times and all the extractions gave good color removal.
