柳沟庄—窟窿山油藏储集层裂缝类型及特征

根据岩心描述、薄片观察、X－CT扫描以及钻井、测井等资料，研究了酒西盆地青西坳陷柳沟庄－窟窿山油藏裂缝性储集层的类型及特征，分析了控制裂缝发育的地质因素及裂缝对油气的控制作用，认为储集层裂缝有3种基本类型，即构造裂缝、构造熔蚀缝和饼状破裂，主要受构造应力场及构造位置等因素的控制。根据裂缝形态、充填特征及其相互关系，裂缝的形成主要有3个期次，其中喜马拉雅运动晚期形成的第三期理解缝对油气运移和聚集最有效。研究结果表明，裂缝是柳沟庄－窟窿山油藏主要的储集空间和控制油气富集的因素。     

Mechanization techniques for poplar development in Turkey

Annual commercial poplar wood production in Turkey is about 3.6 million cubic meters, half of which comes from hybrid poplar I-214. The poplar plantation areas of Turkey are 70% of the poplar plantation areas of the Near and Middle Eastern countries, and nearly 5% of the world. In this study, unit times of standard operations were investigated in poplar nurseries and plantations in which new mechanical technology was applied and compared with traditional methods. Analyses of unit times were made on 11 treatments for poplar nurseries and nine treatments for poplar plantations; some new methods are also recommended. Mechanization methods based on new technologies give promising results in poplar nurseries and plantations.     

Terminally ill patients and volunteer support: Is it the right intervention?

Comments on the article by K. T. Herbst-Damm and J. A. Kulik (see record 2005-02260-012) entitled Volunteer support, marital status, and the survival times of terminally ill patients. Can a simple and low-cost intervention, such as a visit by a volunteer, extend the life of terminally ill patients? The answer, according to a study by Herbst-Damm and Kulik (2005), is yes. When it comes to quality of life, however, the effects of volunteer visits remain murky. Thus, it is critical that we look beyond effects on longevity and assess how such a program would influence quality of life. Extending the life of terminally ill patients might not always a blessing. Prolonging their life might even cause harm, as it can extend unwanted physical and mental suffering. It may also go against some patients' desire to hasten their death. Despite Herbst-Damm and Kulik's important findings, the current author remains unconvinced as to the merits of implementing volunteer visits as an intervention policy. Simon-Type Effects: Chronometric Evidence for Keypress Schemata in Typewriting.

In 4 experiments, chronometric evidence for keypress schemata in typing was sought by presenting stimuli to be typed in positions that were displaced from a central fixation point. Reaction times were shorter when stimulus positions corresponded to keyboard locations of the letters to be typed, suggesting that position was an important part of the internal representation of the response. Experiment 1 presented single letters left and right of fixation. Experiment 2 presented single letters above and below fixation. Experiment 3 presented words left and right of fixation and found evidence of parallel activation of keypress schemata. Experiment 4 found no effect of the eccentricity of the keyboard locations and responding fingers, suggesting that response-location codes are categorical, not metric. Hierarchical production control for a flow shop with dynamic setup changes and random machine breakdowns

In this paper, we study a manufacturing system consisting of two machines separated by two intermediate buffers, and capable of producing two different products. Each product requires a constant processing time on each of the machines. Each machine requires a constant non-negligible setup change time from one product to the other. The demand rate for each product is considered to be piecewise constant. Each machine undergoes failure and repair. The time-to-failure and time-to-repair are exponentially distributed random variables. The setup change and processing operations are resumable. We model our system as a continuous time, continuous flow process. An optimal control problem is formulated for the system to minimize the total expected discounted cost over an infinite horizon. To determine the optimal control policy structure, a discrete version of the problem is solved numerically using a dynamic programming formulation with a piecewise linear penalty function. A real-time control algorithm is then developed with the objective of maintaining low work-in-process inventory and keeping the production close to the demand. The algorithm uses a hierarchical control structure to generate the loading times for each product on each machine in real time and to respond to random disruptions in the system. The system is simulated using this algorithm to study its performance. The performance of the algorithm is also compared to alternative policies.
