ZrO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by the chemical precipitation method and coated with silica through seeded polymerization technique to form core–shell type ZrO2@SiO2 nanostructures. The structural, morphological and silica coating formation of the bare and silica coated particles were studied using Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis and Zeta potential measurements were performed to check the thermal and dispersion stability of the nanostructures. The optical limiting performance of these nanostructures was studied using open-aperture Z-scan technique in which nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm have been used for optical excitation. Both bare and silica coated ZrO2 nanoparticles exhibited good optical limiting behavior due to excited state absorption, arising from effective three photon absorption. It is observed that the optical nonlinearity is enhanced in core shell structures as compared with the bare particles.  相似文献

The ability to manufacture a product using different metal combinations greatly increases flexibility in design and production. Joining of dissimilar metal combinations like Copper-to-Stainless Steel (Cu-to-SS) is, however, a challenging task owing to the large differences in physical and chemical properties. The application of electromagnetic (EM) impact technique is demonstrated for welding copper (Cu) to stainless steel (SS) sheets. The welding Cu-to-SS is accomplished by using Al drivers to accelerate Cu and SS work sheets. The tensile shear strength test and the metallographic studies are carried out for Cu-to-SS EM welds.  相似文献

In the article ‘Supervisory control for fault-tolerant scheduling of real-time multiprocessor systems with aperiodic tasks’, Park and Cho presented a systematic way of computing a largest fault-tolerant and schedulable language that provides information on whether the scheduler (i.e., supervisor) should accept or reject a newly arrived aperiodic task. The computation of such a language is mainly dependent on the task execution model presented in their paper. However, the task execution model is unable to capture the situation when the fault of a processor occurs even before the task has arrived. Consequently, a task execution model that does not capture this fact may possibly be assigned for execution on a faulty processor. This problem has been illustrated with an appropriate example. Then, the task execution model of Park and Cho has been modified to strengthen the requirement that none of the tasks are assigned for execution on a faulty processor.  相似文献

This study represents a continuation of our efforts to identify a cost-effective, doable, practical intervention that, when added to the curriculum of future health professionals, results in the reduction of stigmatizing attitudes toward people living with mental illness. The authors reasoned that a personal presentation from a recovering person would, unlike previous educational efforts described, encompass the elements of personal relevance and inspiration and thus be effective. With the increased consumer interest in fibre‐enriched functional foods, industrial‐scale methods for functional fibre production are demanded. The development of a food‐grade fibre preparation method at lab scale that is feasible for industrial scale‐up is a pre‐requisite. This paper describes two lab‐scale fibre preparation methods that have potential to be scaled up to industrial setting for the production of fruit fibres containing desired bioactives and functionality. The two methods, one aqueous and the other ethanolic, were used to isolate fibres from Granny Smith apples (Malus domestica Borkh cv. ‘Granny Smith’). In the aqueous method, ground apple tissues were suspended in HEPES buffer (20 mM, pH 6.5), and then mechanically ruptured using an Ultra‐Turrax and ring grinder. Between steps, the cell‐wall materials were washed with the HEPES buffer. In the ethanolic method, ground apple tissues were stirred in 72% ethanol at 4 °C, filtered, re‐suspended in 72% ethanol and then washed. Microscopic examination and chemical analysis were performed on the resultant fibres. The aqueous method produced natural and uniform dietary fibres in the form of plant cell walls containing 0.282 g uronic acid per g dried fibre. By comparisons, the ethanolic method produced crude fibres containing only 0.182 g uronic acid per g dried fibre, the lower uronic acid content indicating the presence of impurities. Thus, the aqueous method appeared to be advantageous in terms of the retained pectic polysaccharide content and cost‐effectness for industrial scale‐up. Further characterisation using Folin‐Ciocalteu assay and high performance liquid chromatography indicates that the fibres obtained by the aqueous method contained significant amounts of phenolic compounds (2.6 mg catechin equivalent per g dried fibre). These results suggest that fibres obtained by the aqueous method may be more suitable for functional food applications where fibres with high pectic polysaccharide and beneficial phenolic antioxidants are preferred.  相似文献

Air pollution control (APC) residues produced from cleaning gas emissions at energy from waste (EfW) plants processing municipal solid waste are a problematic hazardous waste. In this research they have been treated using DC plasma technology and this produces an inert glass. Glass-ceramic tiles were prepared by powder pressing and sintering fritted APC residue-derived glass. Tile samples prepared with high levels of plasma treated APC residue glass had comparable physical properties to commercially available ceramics such as porcelain and monoporosa, with high bulk density (2.4 g/cm3), low water absorption (<6%) and high flexural strength (∼60 MPa).  相似文献

Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) types A and B are Zn2+-requiring endoproteases which potently block neurotransmitter release by cleavage of a 25-kDa synaptosomal-associated protein (SNAP-25) and synaptobrevin, respectively. Synaptobrevin is important for the exocystosis of catecholamines from dense-core granules and evidence is presented here for the involvement of SNAP-25 in this process in neuroendocrine cells. The effects of BoNT/A and BoNT/B on regulated secretion were compared in intact bovine chromaffin cells to investigate the consequences of cleavage of the different targets. Catecholamine secretion elicited by Ba2+, by elevated K+ concentrations or by nicotine was prevented by each toxin. A very good correlation was observed between the extents of SNAP-25 cleavage or synaptobrevin cleavage and inhibition of secretion by BoNT/A or BoNT/B, respectively, which indicates the importance of SNAP-25 and synaptobrevin in regulated exocytosis. Despite truncation of almost the entire SNAP-25 pool by exposure of the cells to BoNT/A, a residual fraction of secretion persisted that was induced by 20microM Ca2+ (and to a lesser extent by 1 mM Ba2+) following permeabilisation. Addition of more BoNT/A failed to reduce this level of secretion. Inclusion of Mg.ATP, which greatly enhanced secretion from permeabilised cells, was required for Ca2+-stimulated or Ba2+-stimulated BoNT/A-resistant secretion. Furthermore, synaptobrevin is essential for this response because the response was not observed in BoNT/B treated cells. In view of the ability of BoNT/E to abolish secretion from permeabilised cells and to delete 26 amino acids from the C-terminus of SNAP-25, it can be deduced that cleavage of only nine residues by BoNT/A does not prevent the resultant truncated form exhibiting attenuated activity under the conditions created by permeabilisation. This identification of a novel component of secretion from permeabilised cells should facilitate investigation of the functional interaction of SNAP-25 with other proteins involved in regulated exocytosis.  相似文献

We proposed and developed a novel transillumination laser CT imaging system, using optical fibers, based on the optical heterodyne detection method for biomedical use. The use of optical fibers enables portability and robustness against environmental changes such as varying temperature, air-flow shifts, and unexpected vibrations. In addition, motion-artifact-free images can be obtained with the present system as measurements can be performed with the object fixed. We experimentally investigate in detail the fundamental imaging properties of the system, that has a spatial resolution of 500 /spl mu/m, a dynamic range of approximately 110 dB, and a minimum-detectable-optical power of 10/sup -14/ W as a result of the excellent properties of the heterodyne detection. Based on experimental observations, the proposed system can reconstruct tomographic images of highly scattering objects in the transillumination mode, similar to X-ray CT, at sub-millimeter spatial resolution and can derive quantitative information from the images. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the first in-situ tomographic images of plants using the fiber-optic-based laser CT system.  相似文献

A method commonly used to induce compatibility between polyamides and polyolefins is by chemical modification of the polyolefins. This concept has been employed to produce compatibilized blend of nylon 6 (N6) and polypropylene copolymer (PPCP) by adding maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) as a third component. The blends of N6, PPCP and PP-g-MAH were prepared using a twin screw extruder. TEM of the blends revealed better dispersion and reduction in the size of the dispersed phase. In case of N6 rich blends, about 25% increase in tensile strength was observed with just three phb of PP-g-MAH. The maximum impact strength and flexural modulus were observed at around 30% PPCP. The incorporation of PP-g-MAH increased the flexural modulus of N6/PPCP blends significantly.  相似文献
