SiC whiskers have been incorporated into Zn4Sb3 compound as reinforcements to overcome its extremely brittle nature. The bulk samples were prepared by either hot-extrusion or hot-pressing techniques. The obtained products containing 1 vol.% to 5 vol.% SiC whiskers were confirmed to exhibit sound appearance, high density, and fine-grained microstructure. Mechanical properties such as the hardness and fracture resistance were improved by the addition of SiC whiskers, as a result of dispersion strengthening and microstructural refinement induced by a pinning effect. Furthermore, crack deflection and/or bridging/pullout mechanisms are invoked by the whiskers. Regarding the thermoelectric properties, the Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity values comparable to those of the pure compound are retained over the entire range of added whisker amount. However, the thermal conductivity becomes large with increasing amount of SiC whiskers because of the much higher conductivity of SiC relative to the Zn4Sb3 matrix. This results in a remarkable degradation of the dimensionless figure of merit in the samples with addition of SiC whiskers. Therefore, the optimum amount of SiC whiskers in the Zn4Sb3 matrix should be determined by balancing the mechanical properties and thermoelectric performance.  相似文献

Large-scale uniform graphene growth was achieved by suppressing inhomogeneous carbon segregation using a single domain Ru film epitaxially grown on a sapphire substrate. An investigation of how the metal thickness affected growth and a comparative study on metals with different crystal structures have revealed that locally enhanced carbon segregation at stacking domain boundaries of metal is the origin of inhomogeneous graphene growth. Single domain Ru film has no stacking domain boundary, and the graphene growth on it is mainly caused not by segregation but by a surface catalytic reaction. Suppression of local segregation is essential for uniform graphene growth on epitaxial metal films.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Sea algae cellulose has been little utilized because the cellulose content in sea algae is low. For the effective utilization of sea algae cellulose, cellulose must be converted without drying into valuable material with a high rate and yield. From this viewpoint, effects of hydrothermal pretreatments of sea algae to enhance the glucose production by enzymatic hydrolysis of sea algae cellulose were investigated. RESULTS: Using hydrothermal pretreatment performed at 423 K for Monostroma nitidum Wittrock (green alga) and at 473 K for Solieria pacifica (red alga) for 30 min, yields of extracted water‐soluble components containing monosaccharides were 0.51 g g?1 for the green alga and 0.62 g g?1 for the red alga. The apparent rate of glucose production from hydrothermally pretreated green alga by enzymatic hydrolysis was > 10 times faster than that of the non‐pretreated sample. Yields of glucose from cellulose by enzymatic hydrolysis were 79.9% for the green alga and 87.8% for the red alga. CONCLUSION: Cellulose of sea algae was successfully fractionated by hydrothermal pretreatments, which resulted in high susceptibility of sea algae cellulose to enzyme attack. BACKGROUND: Saphenous vein harvested with a traditional longitudinal technique often results in leg wound complications. An alternative endoscopic harvest technique may decrease these complications. METHODS: One hundred twelve patients scheduled for elective coronary artery bypass grafting were prospectively randomized to have vein harvested using either an endoscopic (group A, n = 54) or traditional technique (group B, n = 58). Groups A and B, respectively, were similar with regard to length of vein harvested (41 +/- 8 cm versus 40 +/- 14 cm), bypasses done (4.1 +/- 1.1 versus 4.2 +/- 1.4), age, preoperative risk stratification, and risks for wound complication (diabetes, sex, obesity, preoperative anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and peripheral vascular disease). RESULTS: Leg wound complications were significantly (p < or = 0.02) reduced in group A (4% [2 of 51] versus 19% [11 of 58]). Univariate analysis identified traditional incision (p < or = 0.02) and diabetes (p < or = 0.05) as wound complication risk factors. Multiple logistic regression analysis identified only the traditional harvest technique as a risk factor for leg wound complications with no significant interaction between harvest technique and any preoperative risk factor (p < or = 0.03). Harvest rate (0.9 +/- 0.4 cm/min versus 1.2 +/- 0.5 cm/min) was slower for group A (p < or = 0.02) and conversion from endoscopic to a traditional harvest occurred in 5.6% (3 of 54) of patients. CONCLUSIONS: In a prospective, randomized trial, saphenous vein harvested endoscopically was associated with fewer wound complications than the traditional longitudinal method.  相似文献

Cell proliferation and sexual reproduction require the faithful segregation of chromosomes. Chromosome segregation is driven by the interaction of chromosomes with the spindle, and the attachment of chromosomes to the proper spindle poles is essential. Initial attachments are frequently erroneous due to the random nature of the attachment process; however, erroneous attachments are selectively eliminated. Proper attachment generates greater tension at the kinetochore than erroneous attachments, and it is thought that attachment selection is dependent on this tension. However, studies of meiotic chromosome segregation suggest that attachment elimination cannot be solely attributed to tension, and the precise mechanism of selective elimination of erroneous attachments remains unclear. During attachment elimination, chromosomes oscillate between the spindle poles. A recent study on meiotic chromosome segregation in fission yeast has suggested that attachment elimination is coupled to chromosome oscillation. In this review, the possible contribution of chromosome oscillation in the elimination of erroneous attachment is discussed in light of the recent finding.  相似文献

Frequent allelic losses on chromosome 9 are seen in a wide variety of human tumors; moreover, two genes (P16 and PTC) whose mutant alleles confer predispositions to some inherited cancer syndromes have been identified on this chromosome. Using 15 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers distributed on both arms of chromosome 9, we tested 96 primary breast carcinomas for allelic loss in order to define the locations of genes that might be involved in this type of tumor. Allelic loss was observed in 37 of the tumors (39%) and detailed deletion mapping identified target regions at 9p21, 9q22.3 and 9q33. Losses at 9q22.3 and 9q33 were correlated with the presence of lymph node metastasis, and allelic loss at 9q22.3 was observed more frequently in scirrhous tumors than in less aggressive histologic types. Therefore, inactivation of tumor suppressor genes in 9q22.3 and 9q33 regions might play a role in progression of breast cancers, especially in metastasis to lymph nodes and in development of scirrhous tumors.  相似文献

We have successfully fabricated a new type of InAlAs/InGaAs heterojunction FET (HJFET) with modulated indium composition channels, called channel composition modulated transistors (CCMTs) in which an InAs channel is sandwiched by In0.53Ga0.47As/In 0.8Ga0.2As sub-channels. The fabricated devices also employ an AlAs/InAs superlattice as a barrier layer against impurity contamination to provide high thermal stability. A 0.2-μm T-shaped gate device exhibits a gm of 1370 mS/mm, Ft of 180 GHz and Fmax of 210 GHz at a low drain bias of 1.0 V. In high-temperature DC life tests conducted at more than 230°C, the devices exhibited less than a 3% degradation in Idss and gm after 1000 h. This demonstrates that these newly-developed CCMTs incorporating AlAs/InAs superlattice insertion technology can offer high-performance and highly-reliable InP-based HJFET's for various microwave and millimeter-wave applications  相似文献

We report two cases of fully intruded tooth after facial fracture in adults. In the first case, the lateral incisor was intruded into the nasal cavity and slipped into the pyriform sinus during operation. The second case involved full intrusion of a molar into the maxillary sinus, resulting in infection. The importance of a thorough intraoral examination for patients with facial trauma is emphasized. All missing teeth should be accounted for to ensure that they have not dislodged inside the body. When full intrusion of a tooth is suspected, facial computed tomography scan may provide assistance with definite diagnosis. If an incisor is completely intruded into the nasal cavity, removal through the floor of the nostril should be considered.  相似文献

Holstein bull calves (n = 51) weaned at 6 wk of age were used in four N balance trials for 4 wk (Trials 1 to 3) or for 2 wk (Trial 4) from 8 wk of age to identify limiting amino acids for a corn and soybean meal diet. The calves were trained to maintain reflex closure of the reticular groove throughout the trials. In Trial 1, administration of .111 g of DL-methionine plus .333 g of L-lysine monohydrochloride/kg BW through the reticular groove increased N retention compared with the control that received isonitrogenous L-glutamine, but administration of .333 g L-lysine monohydrochloride/kg BW alone did not increase N retention in Trial 2. In Trial 3, administration of .111 g of DL-methionine/kg BW improved N balance compared with the control, although the improvement was not detected when DL-methionine was restricted to .022 g/kg BW. In Trial 4, administration of the mixture of .111 g of DL-methionine, .333 g of L-lysine monohydrochloride, and .055 g of L-tryptophan/kg BW increased N retention in calves compared with calves that received an isonitrogenous mixture of .111 g of DL-methionine and .274 g of L-glutamine/kg BW, or .111 g of DL-methionine, .055 g of L-tryptophan, and .234 g of L-glutamine/kg BW. The present results suggest that methionine was the first-limiting and that lysine was probably the second-limiting amino acid for the corn and soybean meal diet in weaned calves less than 11 wk of age, although tryptophan may be either co-limiting with lysine or third-limiting.  相似文献
