Animation by Deformation of Space-Time Objects

This article presents the properties of animation with space-time objects. A space-time object means here a geometrical object embedded in R⁴ with a volumic topology. Resulting animations are obtained by deforming space-time objects with a free-form deformation model. In this way topological modifications, such as disconnecting or hole making, as well as classical geometrical modifications, can be created in an animated object.     

Compressive and Tensile Behaviours of PLLA Matrix Composites Reinforced with Randomly Dispersed Flax Fibres

Nowadays, the ecological footprint of a material is becoming tremendously important. The Poly l-Lactide Acid (PLLA) matrix composites reinforced by randomly scattered flax fibres have mechanical properties similar to polyester/glass composites [1], lower environmental impacts and can be compost at the end of their lives. In this study, the mechanical characterization of biocomposites has been pushed further with the determination of the compressive and tensile properties. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of single flax fibres have been measured and implemented in a micro-mechanical estimation of the composite elastic modulus. Tensile and compressive stiffness determined by the mechanical analyses show very good correlations with the mathematical estimation.

Iridium complexes incorporating coumarin moiety as catalyst photoinitiators: Towards household green LED bulb and halogen lamp irradiation

Household LED bulbs and halogen lamps are used to promote the ring-opening photopolymerization of epoxides in the presence of a new series of iridium(III) complexes (IrCs) exhibiting enhanced visible light absorption properties through the introduction of a coumarin moiety. These latter complexes are used as catalyst photoinitiators in an oxidative cycle in combination with a silane and an iodonium salt. Remarkably, even under the selected very soft irradiations (e.g. light intensity lower than 2 mW/cm²), excellent polymerization profiles are obtained (conversions > 80%). The mechanisms are investigated by ESR and luminescence experiments.

Drag Power Loss Investigation in Cylindrical Roller Bearings Using CFD Approach

In high-speed rolling element bearings, the drag forces can be prominent and it is demonstrated in this investigation that the classical models may not be appropriate for correctly estimating this power loss contribution. A modification of the models is thus proposed, including the usual drag forces formulation relying upon the drag coefficient to be evaluated from a numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. A three-dimensional approach that considers both the rings and the cylinder ends seems the only adequate approach to be used because a two-dimensional approach predicts a drag coefficient value that is too low. When using the former computed drag coefficient for the evaluation of the total power losses, high values of oil volume fraction must be employed to recover the measured power losses.
