An empirical statistical model is described for the use of indoor radon monitoring data as an indicator of the areal radon risk from soil and bedrock. The percentages of future homes expected to have radon concentrations exceeding the design level of 200 Bq/m3 unless constructed to provide protection against the entry of radon were assessed. The radon prognosis was made for different subareas, soil types and foundation types. This kind of report is used by the health and building authorities. In this study, 2689 indoor radon measurements were made in one of Finland's most radon-prone areas, consisting of eleven municipalities with a total area of 4600 km2 and a population of 186,000. Radon concentrations were seasonally adjusted. Data on the location, geology and construction of buildings were determined from maps and questionnaires. The measurements covered different kinds of geological units in the area. The radon risk is highest in the gravel-dominated subarea in an ice-marginal formation and lowest in the northern half of the area in buildings constructed on bedrock. In these two areas, the design level of 200 Bq/m3 would be exceeded in 99% and 39% of new houses with slab-on-grade. 相似文献

Examined speech addressed to different categories of listeners in a study in which 80 undergraduate women taught a block design task to either a 5–7 yr old girl (n?=?6), a retarded adult (4 women, aged 20–33 yrs), a peer who spoke English as a 2nd language (4 adult women [foreigners]), or a peer who was an unimpaired native speaker of English (2 women undergraduates). Speech addressed to children differed from the speech addressed to native adults along every major dimension. It was clearer, simpler, more attention maintaining, and included longer pauses. Speech addressed to retarded adults was similar to speech addressed to 6-yr-olds. Speech to the retarded adults did differ in timing from the other styles of speaking in that it included fewer and somewhat shorter pauses. Speech addressed to foreigners was more repetitive than speech addressed to native speakers, but in all other ways it was similar. Results show that speakers fine-tuned their communications to the level of cognitive and linguistic sophistication of their listener. The hypothesis that baby talk (the speech addressed to children) is a prototypical special speech register from which other special registers are derived is discussed. Inhibition of the biosynthesis of complex N‐glycans in the Golgi apparatus influences progress of tumor growth and metastasis. Golgi α‐mannosidase II (GMII) has become a therapeutic target for drugs with anticancer activities. One critical task for successful application of GMII drugs in medical treatments is to decrease their unwanted co‐inhibition of lysosomal α‐mannosidase (LMan), a weakness of all known potent GMII inhibitors. A series of novel N‐substituted polyhydroxypyrrolidines was synthesized and tested with modeled GH38 α‐mannosidases from Drosophila melanogaster (GMIIb and LManII). The most potent structures inhibited GMIIb (Ki=50–76 μm , as determined by enzyme assays) with a significant selectivity index of IC50(LManII)/IC50(GMIIb) >100. These compounds also showed inhibitory activities in in vitro assays with cancer cell lines (leukemia, IC50=92–200 μm ) and low cytotoxic activities in normal fibroblast cell lines (IC50>200 μm ). In addition, they did not show any significant inhibitory activity toward GH47 Aspergillus saitoiα1,2‐mannosidase. An appropriate stereo configuration of hydroxymethyl and benzyl functional groups on the pyrrolidine ring of the inhibitor may lead to an inhibitor with the required selectivity for the active site of a target α‐mannosidase. 相似文献

Recent architectural and technological advances have led to the feasibility of a new class of massively parallel processing systems based on a fine-grain, message-passing computational model. These machines provide a new alternative for the development of fast, cost-efficient Maximum Likelihood-Expectation Maximization (ML-EM) algorithmic formulations. As an important first step in determining the potential performance benefits to be gathered from such formulations, we have developed an ML-EM algorithm suitable for the high-communications, low-memory (HCLM) execution model supported by this new class of machines. Evaluation of this algorithm indicates a normalized least-square error comparable to, or better than, that obtained via a sequential ray-driven ML-EM formulation and an effective speedup in execution time (as determined via discrete-event simulation of the Pica multiprocessor system currently under development at the Georgia Institute of Technology) of well over two orders of magnitude compared to current ray-driven sequential ML-EM formulations on high-end workstations. Thus, the HCLM algorithmic formulation may provide ML-EM reconstructions within clinical time-frames. 相似文献

Measles causes a profound immune suppression which is responsible for the high morbidity and mortality induced by secondary infections. Dendritic cells (DC) are professional antigen-presenting cells required for initiation of primary immune responses. To determine whether infection of DC by measles virus (MV) may play a role in virus-induced suppression of cell-mediated immunity, we examined the ability of CD1a+ DC derived from cord blood CD34+ progenitors and Langerhans cells isolated from human epidermis to support MV replication. Here we show that both cultured CD1a+ DC and epidermal Langerhans cells can be infected in vitro by both vaccine and wild type strains of MV. DC infection with MV resulted within 24-48 h in cell-cell fusion, cell surface expression of hemagglutinin, and virus budding associated with production of infectious virus. MV infection of DC completely abrogated the ability of the cells to stimulate the proliferation of naive allogeneic CD4+ T cell as early as day 2 of mixed leukocyte reaction (MLR) (i.e., on day 4 of DC infection). Mannose receptor-mediated endocytosis and viability studies indicated that the loss of DC stimulatory function could not be attributed to the death or apoptosis of DC. This total loss of DC stimulatory function required viral replication in the DC since ultraviolet (UV)-inactivated MV or UV-treated supernatant from MV-infected DC did not alter the allostimulatory capacity of DC. As few as 10 MV- infected DC could block the stimulatory function of 10(4) uninfected DC. More importantly, MV-infected DC, in which production of infectious virus was blocked by UV treatment or paraformaldehyde fixation, actively suppressed allogeneic MLR upon transfer to uninfected DC-T-cultures. Thus, the mechanisms which contribute to the loss of the allostimulatory function of DC include both virus release and active suppression mediated by MV-infected DC, independent of virus production. These data suggest that carriage of MV by DC may facilitate virus spreading to secondary lymphoid organs and that MV replication in DC may play a central role in the general immune suppression observed during measles. 相似文献

Mathematical models of ordinary differential equations are used to describe and understand biological phenomena. These models are dynamical systems that often describe the time evolution of more than three variables, i.e., their dynamics take place in a multi‐dimensional space, called the phase space. Currently, mathematical domain scientists use plots of typical trajectories in the phase space to analyze the qualitative behavior of dynamical systems. These plots are called phase portraits and they perform well for 2D and 3D dynamical systems. However, for 4D, the visual exploration of trajectories becomes challenging, as simple subspace juxtaposition is not sufficient. We propose ManyLands to support mathematical domain scientists in analyzing 4D models of biological systems. By describing the subspaces as Lands, we accompany domain scientists along a continuous journey through 4D HyperLand, 3D SpaceLand, and 2D FlatLand, using seamless transitions. The Lands are also linked to 1D TimeLines. We offer an additional dissected view of trajectories that relies on small‐multiple compass‐alike pictograms for easy navigation across subspaces and trajectory segments of interest. We show three use cases of 4D dynamical systems from cell biology and biochemistry. An informal evaluation with mathematical experts confirmed that ManyLands helps them to visualize and analyze complex 4D dynamics, while facilitating mathematical experiments and simulations. 相似文献

An 85% reduction in the bacterial attachment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is achieved using a water‐stable metal–organic framework (MOF) blended with chitosan. These materials demonstrate this reduction in bacterial adhesion in the first 6 h and maintain it over the full 24 h exposure period, a remarkable impediment of biofilm formation to achieve, given the strength of this bacteria strain. The films elicit the same inhibitory effect after a second round of experiments, suggesting reusability of the materials. Characterization of the films by powder X‐ray diffraction, attenuated total reflectance‐IR, and scanning electron microscopy supports retention of the MOF structure within the chitosan matrix. The extensive control experiments employed in this study isolate the observed biological effects to the synthesized films, and not to possible leachates from the films. This presents the first account of using a water‐stable MOF within a polymer as a means to achieve an antibacterial surface by demonstrating an 85% reduction in bacterial attachment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 相似文献

This work was focused on the production and characterization of microcellular polyurethane (PU) composites reinforced with pine wood‐fibers or with hemp, which can be applied to the manufacture of car interior panels, or acoustic insulation panels for the construction industry. The polymers selected for the study were crosslinked PUs, synthesized from a castor oil‐based polyol, with the formulations adjusted to obtain different foaming levels. Microfoamed composites with preferential orientation were prepared from long hemp fibers. Also, samples with random arrangement of short hemp and wood fibers were obtained. The morphology of the composites was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. A novel broadband rat‐race coupler has been investigated. The coupler utilizes an artificial left‐handed transmission line section for broadband phase response realization. Moreover, a narrowband model of left‐handed section has been shown to prove the couplers equivalent circuit at the center frequency. To broaden the operational bandwidth multisection quarter‐wave transformers have been proposed.
