Optimizing Disparity for Motion in Depth

Beyond the careful design of stereo acquisition equipment and rendering algorithms, disparity post‐processing has recently received much attention, where one of the key tasks is to compress the originally large disparity range to avoid viewing discomfort. The perception of dynamic stereo content however, relies on reproducing the full disparity‐time volume that a scene point undergoes in motion. This volume can be strongly distorted in manipulation, which is only concerned with changing disparity at one instant in time, even if the temporal coherence of that change is maintained. We propose an optimization to preserve stereo motion of content that was subject to an arbitrary disparity manipulation, based on a perceptual model of temporal disparity changes. Furthermore, we introduce a novel 3D warping technique to create stereo image pairs that conform to this optimized disparity map. The paper concludes with perceptual studies of motion reproduction quality and task performance in a simple game, showing how our optimization can achieve both viewing comfort and faithful stereo motion.     

Predictors of solvent effectiveness for dissolution of coal preasphaltenes

The dissolvabilities of coal preasphaltenes in several solvents with various solvent parameters were correlated. Generally dissolvability increased with increasing net hydrogen-bonding index, increasing donor number (DN) and increasing value of donor number minus acceptor number (AN) of the solvent. However, these trends show significant scatter and are not satisfactory as predictors of individual solvent behaviour. Plots of preasphaltene dissolvability against Hildebrand solubility parameter produce curves with broad maxima and several off-line points. Best results are obtained with DN/AN ratios, which yield smooth curves with narrow maxima and little scatter. These ratios are also shown to be useful predictors of the effectiveness of solvents for the extraction and swelling of coal.     

Hydrogen permeation in Fe-40 at.% Al alloy at different temperatures

The electrochemical permeation technique for studying transport and trapping of hydrogen in Fe-40 at.% Al alloy at temperatures of 5, 25, 45 and 65 °C was used in the paper. The influence of temperature on the effective hydrogen diffusion coefficient, hydrogen permeation rate and hydrogen solubility was determined. The activation energy of hydrogen diffusion in iron aluminide in the studied temperature range was also determined.     

Coralyne Radiosensitizes A549 Cells by Upregulation of CDKN1A Expression to Attenuate Radiation Induced G2/M Block of the Cell Cycle

Coralyne is a synthetic analog of berberine related to protoberberine-isoquinoline alkaloids. Isoquinoline derivatives and analogs are renowned as potent radiosensitizers with potential medical application. In the present study, we investigated the effect of coralyne on the cell death, cytoskeletal changes and cell cycle progression of irradiated A549 cells. A clonogenic assay revealed that coralyne pretreatment decreased the viability of A549 cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Moreover, exposure to coralyne and ionizing radiation (IR) markedly altered the filamentous actin cytoskeletal architecture and integrin-β binding sites of A549 cells. Treatment with 1–25 µM coralyne in combination with 2 Gy of IR significantly reduced the percentage of cells in G2/M phase compared with 2 Gy IR alone. These results indicate that coralyne is a potent radiosensitizing agent that may find an application in medicine.     

Information technology investment announcements and market value in transition economies: Evidence from Warsaw Stock Exchange

This study examines stock market reactions to announcements of information technology investments in Poland, an emerging market and transition economy. Based on 66 announcements by companies traded at the Warsaw Stock Exchange in the period 2002–2009, our study confirms some previously published results from studies conducted primarily in highly developed markets, but also shows that specific characteristics of announcements play a more important role than has been commonly assumed. Our results indicate that investors in Poland react more positively if systems are acquired from global rather than local vendors. Announcements about completed projects are more positively received than announcements about planned or in-progress projects. Furthermore, announcements in Polish, targeted at existing shareholders, are more likely to be received positively than similar announcements released in English, targeting global investors.     

Assessment of the Superheater Ash Fouling Using a Numerical Model of the Superheater

ABSTRACT

Superheaters are high-temperature cross-flow heat exchangers. Steam flows inside the tubes, and the flue gas outside in a direction perpendicular to the axes of the tubes. However, they differ very substantially from the other heat exchangers operating at low temperatures. Superheaters are characterized by complex flow system and high tube walls temperature. Superheaters are among the most exposed to damaging pressure elements of steam boilers. Damage to the superheater causes about 40% of emergency shutdowns of boilers. The paper presents the boiler superheater model with distributed parameters, which is used to determine on-line the degree of superheater fouling by ash.     

The Reluctant President.

Coaching CEO successor candidates is challenging and deeply nuanced in the best of circumstances. The stakes rise exponentially when the sitting CEO owns the company, resents having "anointed" an eventual successor, and has been phenomenally successful despite the bruising effects of his narcissism and toxic micromanagement. This case study describes how a data-driven, insight-oriented coaching methodology helped the CEO candidate accelerate his effectiveness, instill hope in the organization, and forge a more stable relationship with the CEO--a sufficiently functional relationship for the future CEO to decide to remain with the company. Furthermore, this work highlights the importance of clinical skills and 3 coaching meta principles (traction, trust, and truth-telling). Finally, this longer term coaching engagement illustrates the dynamic role shift from coach to trusted advisor. Through this deepened relationship, coaching gains were consolidated and an objective sounding board was retained for both the CEO and his eventual successor.
