The study presented is an example of the assessment of the relative sustainability of either option for disposal of domestic sanitary waste, either via the toilet or via the solid waste route. This required an evaluation of the total (social, economic, environmental, and technical) benefit/cost of implementing and adopting the alternative routes and an assessment of public responsiveness to encouragement to change sanitary waste disposal practices. It illustrates how, even for an apparently straightforward either/or question, the assessment of relative sustainability is complex and the amount of data needed to quantify sustainability indicators is prodigious. The study also provides an appraisal of the effectiveness of public campaigns to reduce waterborne disposal. Important information regarding public attitude and behavior in relation to wastewater systems has been acquired and lessons for ways of encouraging behavioral change to more sustainable ways of living have been gleaned.  相似文献

The molecular beam epitaxy of AlGaN/GaN epilayers on silicon (1 1 1) using an aluminum nitride buffer layer, and subsequent fabrication of free standing III-nitride cantilevers on Si(1 1 1) has been investigated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of cross-section samples reveals a columnar structure consisting of the hexagonal gallium nitride polytype. Selected area diffraction indicates an epitaxial relationship between the gallium nitride and silicon substrate which is described by GaN[0 0 0 1]//Si[1 1 1] and GaN(1 1 0 0)//Si(1 1 1). Imaging of the electronic structure of an AlGaN/GaN interface has been investigated by mapping the variation in the plasmon frequency using an electron energy loss spectrometer on a dedicated scanning transmission electron microscope. Cantilevers were fabricated using a combination of etching processes. Nitride etch rates during inductively coupled plasma dry etch processing using a Cl2/Ar plasma etchant were obtained by monitoring the optical reflectivity of the nitride films in situ. A peak GaN etch rate of 250 nm/min was measured, the etch rate was found to be strongly dependent on the d.c. self-bias. Thin beams of GaN having a length of 7 μm and 0.7 μm thickness, were fabricated and mechanically released from Si(1 1 1) substrates using a combination of two dry ICP etch processes, using Cl2/Ar and CF4/Ar/O2 chemistries, and a potassium hydroxide (KOH) aqueous wet etch.  相似文献

Low-Reynolds-number flows in cavities, characterized by separating and recirculating flows are increasingly used in microfluidic applications such as mixing and sorting of fluids, cells, or particles. However, there is still a lack of guidelines available for selecting the appropriate or optimized microcavity configuration according to the specific task at hand. In an effort to provide accurate design guidelines, we investigate quantitatively low-Reynolds-number cavity flow phenomena using a microfluidic screening platform featuring rectangular channels lined with cylindrical cavities. Using particle image velocimetry (PIV), supported by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, we map the entire spectrum of flows that exist in microcavities over a wide range of low-Reynolds numbers (Re = 0.1, 1, and 10) and dimensionless geometric parameters. Comprehensive phase diagrams of the corresponding microcavity flow regimes are summarized, capturing the gradual transition from attached flow to a single vortex and crossing through two- and three-vortex recirculating systems featuring saddle-points. Finally, we provide design insights into maximizing the rotational frequencies of recirculating single-vortex microcavity systems. Overall, our results provide a complete and quantitative framework for selecting cavities in microfluidic-based microcentrifuges and vortex mixers.  相似文献

Patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3), commonly known as adiponutrin, is part of a novel subfamily of triglyceride lipase enzymes with potential effects on triglyceride metabolism in adipose and hepatic tissues. The predicted bovine PNPLA3 sequence has been identified, but expression of the gene had not been examined. The objectives of this study were to confirm the predicted bovine PNPLA3 gene sequence, determine expression of the bovine PNPLA3 gene in response to whole-animal energy balance, identify single nucleotide polymorphisms present in dairy cows, and verify the presence of the protein in the liver. Using liver biopsy samples collected from cows at +28 d relative to calving (DRTC), RNA was isolated and used to generate a cDNA template for amplification of the entire predicted coding sequence of PNPLA3 via PCR. To determine if energy balance alters the expression of PNPLA3, RNA was isolated and mRNA expression quantified in liver samples from mid-lactation cows after a 5-d ad libitum period (n = 5) and after a subsequent 5-d 50% feed restriction period (n = 5), and in samples collected from cows at −14, +1, +14, and +28 DRTC (n = 16). The presence of PNPLA3 protein was detected by Western blot in liver protein samples collected at +28 DRTC. Expression of hepatic PNPLA3 was decreased after a period of feed restriction (8.14 vs. 1.08 ± 2.17 arbitrary units, ad libitum vs. fasted). Expression of PNPLA3 mRNA was decreased at +1 and +14 DRTC compared with −14 DRTC (23.35, 7.28, 10.17, and 14.5 ± 4.9 arbitrary units, −14, +1, +14, and +28 DRTC, respectively). The presence of PNPLA3 protein was detected as a 55-kDa band in hepatic protein isolations from liver tissue collected at +28 DRTC. These data confirm the presence and sequence of the bovine hepatic PNPLA3 gene and single nucleotide polymorphisms. Furthermore, these data indicate responsiveness of bovine hepatic PNPLA3 to energy balance.  相似文献

In the present paper the environmental impact of biocomposites and bio-sandwich materials production are evaluated, using simplified Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) following the procedure recommended in the ISO 14044 standard. The materials are dimensioned and evaluated by comparing with reference materials, glass mat reinforced unsatured polyester and glass mat/unsatured polyester/balsa sandwich. The results indicate that bio-sandwich materials are very attractive in terms environmental impact. However further improvements in biocomposite and bio-sandwich mechanical strength are necessary if they are to be used in transport application compared to glass/polyester and glass/polyester/balsa sandwich.  相似文献
