Superior detection and rejection of 1 versus another class of items during recognition is called the mirror effect. Some mirror effects may involve strategic criterion adjustments based on item distinctiveness and its relation to memorability. Three experiments demonstrated mirror effects for known versus unknown scenes and 1 suggested a similar pattern for faces. In opposition to preexperimental familiarity, lures from known and frequently encountered locations were confidently rejected more often than unknown lures. Forgetting and speeding recognition reversed this lure response pattern, suggesting abandonment of strategic adjustment in favor of a single fixed criterion. With sufficient response time and recent encoding, observers demand more evidence for conceptually distinctive items, perhaps because such items typically foster vivid recollection during retrieval. The patterns in nitrate and phosphorus sources, loads and concentrations in a groundwater-dominated lowland catchment, the Hampshire Avon, are examined and water quality signatures are used to identify a typology of headwater stream types. The major separations in water quality are linked to geology and groundwater chemistry as modified by the impacts of point source sewage effluents. The water quality of the major tributaries and the main stem of the River Avon are linked to the relative contributions of these source types, the impact of further direct effluent inputs to the main channel and in-stream processing. The tributaries and main stem of the Avon act as net sinks for total reactive phosphorus (TRP). Low concentrations of TRP were found in the Chalk groundwater and the groundwater system acts as an efficient buffer, removing and retaining TRP from water draining from the catchment surface into the aquifer. Thermodynamic analysis of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) solubility controls indicates that this natural 'self-cleansing mechanism' system within the groundwater may be directly linked to CaCO3-P co-precipitation within the aquifer matrix.  相似文献

The process lethality model was used to predict the thermal kill of Salmonella and Listeria innocua in fully cooked and vacuum-packaged chicken breast meat during hot-water postprocess pasteurization. Time-temperature profiles of the meat samples during treatment and D-values (decimal reduction times) and z-values (change in temperature required to change the D-value) for Salmonella and L. innocua in the same meat product were used in the prediction of lethality. The results of the model prediction were compared with those of the inoculation study for the same meat product at a 95% confidence level of up to 10(7) CFU/g for Salmonella and L. innocua. The thermal lethality predictions obtained with the process lethality model for Salmonella and L. innocua were within the 95% confidence level for the experimental data from the inoculation study, suggesting that the process lethality model was a useful tool for the determination of the kill of Salmonella or L. innocua at up to 10(7) CFU/g in fully cooked chicken breast meat products during postprocess pasteurization with hot water.  相似文献

Bone cement is subjected to multi-axial cyclic loading when used to fixate orthopedic prostheses for joint arthroplasty. In this study, tubular specimens of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement are subjected to internal pressure and cyclic axial loading to ascertain the influence of multi-axial loading on fatigue life. As expected, it was found that the probability of survival of specimens under multi-axial loading was very much reduced relative to specimens loaded uniaxially. Furthermore, the variability of the fatigue life was increased by multi-axial loading. In conclusion, the results point to the importance of characterizing the behavior of bone cements under the multi-axial fatigue experienced in vivo, and of the importance of accounting for the multi-axial stress state when predicting implant longevity.  相似文献

A quantitative LC-APCI-MS/MS method for simultaneous determination of multiple illicit drugs, methadone, and their metabolites in oral fluid was developed and validated. Sample pretreatment was limited to acetonitrile protein precipitation. LC separation was performed in 25.5 min, with a total analysis time of 35 min. Identification and quantitation were based on selected reaction monitoring. Calibration by linear regression analysis utilized deuterated internal standards and a weighing factor 1/x. Limits of detection and lower limits of quantitation (LOQ) were established between 0.25 and 5 ng/ mL and 0.5-10 ng/mL, respectively. linearity was obtained with an average correlation coefficient (R2) of >0.99, over a dynamic range from the LOQ up to maximum 500 ng/mL The method demonstrated good accuracy, intra- and interbatch precision, recovery, and stability for all compounds. No oral fluid matrix effect was observed throughout the chromatographic run. Protein precipitation provided a fast and simple sample pretreatment, while LC-APCI-MS/MS proved to be a sensitive and rugged quantitative method for multiple illicit and legal drugs in oral fluid. The method proved to be suitable for the evaluation of oral fluid as an alternative matrix to urine for monitoring illicit drug use and for determining oral fluid methadone concentrations in pregnant opiate and/or cocaine addicts.  相似文献

This paper presents the development and characterization of a highly selective magnesium fluorescent optical nanosensor, made possible by PEBBLE (probe encapsulated by biologically localized embedding) technology. A ratiometric sensor has been developed by co-immobilizing a dye that is sensitive to and highly selective for magnesium, with a reference dye in a matrix. The sensors are prepared via a microemulsion polymerization process, which entraps the sensing components inside a polymer matrix. The resultant spherical sensors are approximately 40 nm in diameter. The Coumarin 343 (C343) dye, which by itself does not enter the cell, when immobilized in a PEBBLE is used as the magnesium-selective agent that provides the high and necessary selectivity over other intracellular ions, such as Ca2+, Na+, and K+. The dynamic range of these sensors was 1-30 mM, with a linear range from 1 to 10 mM, with a response time of <4 s. In contrast to free dye, these nano-optodes are not perturbed by proteins. They are fully reversible and exhibit minimal leaching and photobleaching over extended periods of time. In vitro intracellular changes in Mg2+ concentration were monitored in C6 glioma cells, which remained viable after PEBBLE delivery via gene gun injection. The selectivity for Mg2+ along with the biocompatibility of the matrix provides a new and reliable tool for intracellular magnesium measurements.  相似文献

Near-infrared hyperspectral imaging is finding utility in remote sensing applications such as detection and quantification of chemical vapor effluents in stack plumes. Optimizing the sensing system or quantification algorithms is difficult because reference images are rarely well characterized. The present work uses a radiance model for a down-looking scene and a detailed noise model for dispersive and Fourier transform spectrometers to generate well-characterized synthetic data. These data were used with a classical least-squares-based estimator in an error analysis to obtain estimates of different sources of concentration-pathlength quantification error in the remote sensing problem. Contributions to the overall quantification error were the sum of individual error terms related to estimating the background, atmospheric corrections, plume temperature, and instrument signal-to-noise ratio. It was found that the quantification error depended strongly on errors in the background estimate and second-most on instrument signal-to-noise ratio. Decreases in net analyte signal (e.g., due to low analyte absorbance or increasing the number of analytes in the plume) led to increases in the quantification error as expected. These observations have implications on instrument design and strategies for quantification. The outlined approach could be used to estimate detection limits or perform variable selection for given sensing problems.  相似文献

Speer carbon composition resistors, in particular the 470 and 220 1/2 W grade 1002 resistors, have been used as secondary thermometers at temperatures below 4 K for many years. Their zero field resistances have been measured between 300 K and 4 K using a dip probe. Above 10 K, the resistance behavior can be explained using a simple temperature power law, R(T) R0/T0.16. The resistance measurements have been extended to 0.02 K using dilution refrigerators. Between 4 K and 0.3 K, the resistances exhibited activated laws having hopping exponents y 0.5. Below 0.3 K, the 470 resistors exhibit a crossover to a weaker activated law. Crossover resistance expressions suggest that the resistances follow a Mott variable-range hopping (VRH) law below 0.05 K. The low temperature magnetoresistance (MR) data showed changes of less than ±12 % of the zero field resistance values in fields up to 10 T. Fits using the wave function shrinkage and the forward interference models gave only fair agreement with the MR data.  相似文献

The effects of treatment with an undefined commercial Nurmi-type culture (NTC), cultured cecal contents, and a dual-strain probiotic, containing Enterococcus faecalis and Pediococcus pentosaceus, on Salmonella Typhimurium colonization were evaluated in a specific-pathogen-free bird model. Two sets of trials were performed, and each study was arranged as a randomized complete block design with three treatments. Treatments consisted of (i) control, (ii) commercial NTC, and (iii) cultured cecal contents in the first set of trials and (i) control, (ii) defined probiotic, and (iii) cultured cecal contents in the second set. On day 1, birds were administered 1.2 x 10(7) CFU of the appropriate treatment by oral gavage. On day 3, all birds were challenged with 1 x 10(6) CFU of Salmonella Typhimurium 29E (nalidixic acid resistant). Chicks were asphyxiated with argon gas on day 10, and ceca were aseptically removed. Salmonella Typhimurium counts (CFU per milliliter of cecal contents) were determined on brilliant green agar containing 30 mg of nalidixic acid per liter, and CFU counts were log transformed prior to analysis. Cecal pH and volatile fatty acid concentrations were also determined. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance, and means were compared by Tukey's pairwise analysis. Commercial NTC and cultured cecal contents treatments resulted in a significant decrease (P < or = 0.05) in Salmonella Typhimurium 29E colonization, with the NTC offering a higher level of protection. In the second set of trials, the defined probiotic tended to reduce colonization by Salmonella Typhimurium (P = 0.07), while chicks treated with cultured cecal contents displayed a significant decrease (P = 0.03) when compared to the negative control. No significant change was observed in cecal pH or in acetate and propionate concentrations; however, a significant increase in butyrate concentrations in both the cultured cecal contents and defined probiotic treatment groups was observed when compared to the control birds. These observations suggest that defined cultures are less effective Salmonella control agents than are preparations generated from the complete cecal microflora.  相似文献
