This paper deals with the scheduling problem of minimizing the makespan in a permutational flowshop environment with the possibility of outsourcing certain jobs. It addresses this problem by means of the development of an ant colony optimization-based algorithm. This new algorithm, here named as flowshop ant colony optimization is composed of two combined ACO heuristics. Web-based learning environments are becoming increasingly popular in higher education. One of the most important web-learning resources is the virtual laboratory (VL), which gives students an easy way for training and learning through the Internet. Moreover, on-line collaborative communication represents a practical method to transmit the knowledge and experience from the teacher to students overcoming physical distance and isolation. Considering these facts, the authors of this document have developed a new dynamic collaborative e-learning system which combines the main advantages of virtual laboratories and collaborative learning practices. In this system, the virtual laboratories are based on Java applets which have embedded simulations developed in Easy Java Simulations (EJS), an open-source tool for teachers who do not need complex programming skills. The collaborative e-learning is based on a real-time synchronized communication among these Java applets. Therefore, this original approach provides a new tool which integrates virtual laboratories inside a synchronous collaborative e-learning framework. Photographic supra-projection is a forensic process that aims to identify a missing person from a photograph and a skull found. One of the crucial tasks throughout all this process is the craniofacial superimposition which tries to find a good fit between a 3D model of the skull and the 2D photo of the face. This photographic supra-projection stage is usually carried out manually by forensic anthropologists. It is thus very time consuming and presents several difficulties. In this paper, we aim to demonstrate that real-coded evolutionary algorithms are suitable approaches to tackle craniofacial superimposition. To do so, we first formulate this complex task in forensic identification as a numerical optimization problem. Then, we adapt three different evolutionary algorithms to solve it: two variants of a real-coded genetic algorithm and the state of the art evolution strategy CMA-ES. We also consider an existing binary-coded genetic algorithm as a baseline. Results on several superimposition problems of real-world identification cases solved by the Physical Anthropology lab at the University of Granada (Spain) are considered to test our proposals. 相似文献

In the present work, a constructive learning algorithm was employed to design a near-optimal one-hidden layer neural network structure that best approximates the dynamic behavior of a bioprocess. The method determines not only a proper number of hidden neurons but also the particular shape of the activation function for each node. Here, the projection pursuit technique was applied in association with the optimization of the solvability condition, giving rise to a more efficient and accurate computational learning algorithm. As each activation function of a hidden neuron is defined according to the peculiarities of each approximation problem, better rates of convergence are achieved, guiding to parsimonious neural network architectures. The proposed constructive learning algorithm was successfully applied to identify a MIMO bioprocess, providing a multivariable model that was able to describe the complex process dynamics, even in long-range horizon predictions. The resulting identification model was considered as part of a model-based predictive control strategy, producing high-quality performance in closed-loop experiments. 相似文献

Agricultural production is highly dependent on climate variability in many parts of the world. In particular, drought may severely reduce crop yields, potentially affecting food availability at local, regional, and global scales. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) operates the Global Early Warning System (GIEWS), which monitors global food supply and demand. One of the key challenges is to obtain synoptic information on a recurrent and timely basis about drought-affected agricultural zones. This is needed to quickly identify areas requiring immediate attention. The Agricultural Stress Index System (ASIS), based on imagery from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensors on board the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Meteorological Operational Satellite (METOP) satellites, was specifically developed to meet this need. The system is based on a methodology developed by Rojas, Vrieling, and Rembold over the African continent. This approach has been modified and adapted to the global scale to produce an agricultural stress index (ASI) representing, per administrative unit, the percentage of cropland (or pasture) areas affected by drought over the growing season. The vegetation health index (VHI), based on normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and temperature anomalies, is used as a drought indicator. A fused time series of AVHRR data from METOP and NOAA was used to produce a consistent time series of VHI at 1 km resolution. Global phenology maps, indicating the number of growing seasons and their start and end dates, were derived from a multi-annual image set of SPOT-Vegetation (1999–2011). The VHI time series and phenology maps were then combined to produce the ASI for the years 1984 to the present. This allowed evaluation of the suitability of the ASIS to identify drought using historical reports and ancillary data. We study the barrier coverage problem using relocatable sensor nodes. We assume each sensor can sense an intruder or event inside its sensing range. Sensors are initially located at arbitrary positions on the barrier and can move along the barrier. The goal is to find final positions for sensors so that the entire barrier is covered. In recent years, the problem has been studied extensively in the centralized setting. In this paper, we study a barrier coverage problem in the distributed and discrete setting. We assume that we have n identical sensors located at grid positions on the barrier, and that each sensor repeatedly executes a Look-Compute-Move cycle: based on what it sees in its vicinity, it makes a decision on where to move, and moves to its next position. We make two strong but realistic restrictions on the capabilities of sensors: they have a constant visibility range and can move only a constant distance in every cycle. In this model, we give the first two distributed algorithms that achieve barrier coverage for a line segment barrier when there are enough nodes in the network to cover the entire barrier. Our algorithms are synchronous, and local in the sense that sensors make their decisions independently based only on what they see within their constant visibility range. One of our algorithms is oblivious whereas the other uses two bits of memory at each sensor to store the type of move made in the previous step. We show that our oblivious algorithm terminates within \(\varTheta (n^2)\) steps with the barrier fully covered, while the constant-memory algorithm is shown to take \(\varTheta (n)\) steps to terminate in the worst case. Since any algorithm in which a sensor can only move a constant distance in one step requires \(\varOmega (n)\) steps on some inputs, our second algorithm is asymptotically optimal. 相似文献

Existing empirical studies on test-driven development (TDD) report different conclusions about its effects on quality and productivity. Very few of those studies are experiments conducted with software professionals in industry. We aim to analyse the effects of TDD on the external quality of the work done and the productivity of developers in an industrial setting. We conducted an experiment with 24 professionals from three different sites of a software organization. We chose a repeated-measures design, and asked subjects to implement TDD and incremental test last development (ITLD) in two simple tasks and a realistic application close to real-life complexity. To analyse our findings, we applied a repeated-measures general linear model procedure and a linear mixed effects procedure. We did not observe a statistical difference between the quality of the work done by subjects in both treatments. We observed that the subjects are more productive when they implement TDD on a simple task compared to ITLD, but the productivity drops significantly when applying TDD to a complex brownfield task. So, the task complexity significantly obscured the effect of TDD. Further evidence is necessary to conclude whether TDD is better or worse than ITLD in terms of external quality and productivity in an industrial setting. A framework for stability analysis of local on‐ramp metering control strategies based on the cell transmission model is presented. Within this framework, it is possible to formulate Lyapunov and input‐state stability results for on‐ramp metering control strategies in an open section of highway with on‐ramps. Using this analysis, recommendations for the design of on‐ramp metering control laws set points are derived. Two examples on the use of such analysis are presented. One deals with the stability analysis of a local on‐ramp metering control law and the other with the design of a disturbance observer that, used in combination with the local on‐ramp metering control law, provides a more robust response to traffic regulation. Simulation results are included that confirm the possibility of using this framework to test the impact of local on‐ramp metering control strategies. 相似文献

to harness the potential of GPUs to perform the level-of-detail extraction on graphics hardware. The aim of this work is to
present a new level-of-detail scheme based on triangles which is both simple and efficient. In this approach, the extraction
process updates vertices instead of indices, thus providing a perfect framework for adapting the algorithms to work completely
on GPU shaders. One of the key aspects of our proposal is the need for just a single rendering pass in order to obtain the
desired geometry. Moreover, coherence among the different approximations is maximized by means of a symmetric extraction algorithm,
which performs the same process when refining and coarsening the mesh. Lastly, we also introduce different uses of the scheme

Software engineering strives to enable the economic construction of software systems that behave reliably, predictably, and safely. In other engineering disciplines, safety is assured in part by detailed monitoring of processes. In software, we may achieve some level of confidence in the operation of programs by monitoring their execution. DynaMICs is a software tool that facilitates the collection and use of constraints for software systems. In addition, it supports traceability by mapping constraints to system artifacts. Constraint specifications are stored separately from code; constraint-monitoring code is automatically generated from the specifications and inserted into the program at appropriate places; and constraints are verified at execution time. These constraint checks are triggered by changes made to variable values. We describe the architecture of DynaMICs, discuss alternative verification techniques, and outline research directions for the DynaMICs project. 相似文献
