In this study the corrosion resistances of AISI 1018 and AISI 304 borided and non-borided steels were estimated using polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Boriding of the steel samples was conducted using the powder-pack method at 1223 K with 6 h of exposure. Structural examinations of the surfaces of the borided steels showed the presence of a Fe2B layer with isolated FeB teeth on the AISI 1018 steel, whereas a compact layer of FeB/Fe2B was formed on the AISI 304 steel. Polarization resistance and EIS of the borided and non-borided steels surfaces were performed in a corrosive solution of 1 M HCl. The EIS data were analyzed during 43 days of exposure to the acid solution. Impedance curves obtained during this period for the borided and non-borided steels were modeled using equivalent electrical circuits. The results of both electrochemical techniques indicated that boride layers formed at the steel surfaces effectively protect the samples from the corrosive effects of HCl. The main corrosion processes observed on the boride layers were pitting and crevice corrosion.  相似文献

The amount of money spent in a store is positively correlated with the amount of time spent inside. We argue this is an opportunity for multimedia installations that can entertain shoppers and promote interaction with the shop??s products. This was the main principle behind our design idea for two interactive installations specifically conceived for shoe shops. We present two applications of interactive multimedia to shoe shopping: an interactive semantic mirror and an interactive window logo. We also describe the results of ethnographic studies, before and after the design process. Our contribution is two-fold: (i) we develop and apply a new multimedia architecture that combines RFID in-store technology with high-end motion detection algorithms, and (ii) we describe one of the first few studies about multimedia installations for improving the shoe shopping experience, in what we call ??foot-turistic?? interactions.  相似文献

This article exploits the influence of rubber particle size (RPS) and rubber crosslinking on environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR) of high impact polystyrene (HIPS), with special interest on the influence of small rubber particles fraction. Three commercial HIPS of high ESCR were selected and four batches of HIPS were prepared in‐house, including samples based on high cis and very high viscosity polybutadiene (PB). Their morphologies were analyzed by low angle laser light scattering, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, and the samples were submitted to flexural ESCR tests with fatty agents. The ESCR to sunflower oil was found to increase with the reduction of the rubber particles fraction smaller than 1–2 micron. Results have also confirmed that an increase in RPS is the key parameter to promote ESCR, although there is limit for RPS to be effective on ESCR improvement. The reduction of small rubber particles fraction in HIPS was achieved by using a high cis PB, that promotes low grafting efficiency of polystyrene onto PB backbone because of the low content of 1,2 vinyl isomer. Besides the ESCR improvements, HIPS with high cis PB showed higher elastic modulus and impact resistance than HIPS containing medium cis PB, which is desired for thickness reduction in food packaging and refrigeration cabinets. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is widely used in diesel engines to control engine out NOx (oxides of nitrogen) emissions. A portion of the exhaust gases is recirculated into the intake manifold of the engine after cooling it through a heat exchanger. EGR cooler heat exchangers, however, tend to lose efficiency and have increased pressure drop as deposit forms on the heat exchanger surface. This adversely affects the combustion process, engine durability, and emissions. In this study, a 1-D model was developed to simulate soot deposition, soot removal, and condensation of several hydrocarbon (HC) species in a circular tube with turbulent gas flow at constant wall temperature. The circular tube, which makes up the computational domain in the model, represents a single channel from any EGR cooler geometry. The model takes into account soot particle deposition due to thermophoresis, diffusion, turbulent impaction, and gravitational drift. However, thermophoresis was found to be the most dominant deposition mechanism for boundary conditions at which EGR coolers typically operate. Soot removal was modeled by considering a force balance between the drag and van der Waals forces. A lognormal distribution of particles was assumed at the tube inlet. The evolution of the particle distribution in the bulk flow along the tube as well as the mass distribution in the deposit layer on the tube walls is predicted by the model. Condensation of six HC species between C15-C24 alkanes was also modeled. Predictions made by the model are in reasonably good agreement with experimental data obtained from a laboratory reactor under the same boundary conditions. There are several assumptions and simplifications built into the model, which can be refined further to improve it.

Recent accounts of accidents draw attention to “automation surprises” that arise in safety critical systems. An automation surprise can occur when a system behaves differently from the expectations of the operator. Interface mode changes are one class of such surprises that have significant impact on the safety of a dynamic interactive system. They may take place implicitly as a result of other system action. Formal specifications of interactive systems provide an opportunity to analyse problems that arise in such systems. In this paper we consider the role that an interactor based specification has as a partial model of an interactive system so that mode consequences can be checked early in the design process. We show how interactor specifications can be translated into the SMV model checker input language and how we can use such specifications in conjunction with the model checker to analyse potential for mode confusion in a realistic case. Our final aim is to develop a general purpose methodology for the automated analysis of interactive systems. This verification process can be useful in raising questions that have to be addressed in a broader context of analysis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the hygiene practices of food handlers in municipal schools of Natal, Brazil, where 27 public schools were evaluated, using a checklist and microbiological analysis of hands. It was found that 74.1% of the handlers did not receive periodic training, 51.9% did not undergo annual health examinations and 100% did not practice proper hand hygiene, a situation that reflected significantly (p < 0.05) in hand contamination, in which fecal coliforms were detected on 55.6% of the hands analyzed. It was concluded that the schools studied did not have appropriate hygienic conditions, suggesting the need for interventions that ensure the quality of school food served to the children.  相似文献

The advancement of speech coding technology has led to new and improved standards. The Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T) has been a leader in developing speech coding standards for telecommunications applications. To increase the efficiency of the coding standard selection process, a group called User's Group on Software Tools (UGST) was established in 1990 to produce a framework of speech coding-related software tools that would allow a common ground for activities across different organizations. Over the years, this group produced a high-quality software tool library (STL), which has been used in the definition of ITU and non-ITU standards, such as G.723.1, G.729, half-rate and enhanced full-rate GSM, among others. However, despite its usefulness, the ITU-T STL is largely unknown outside the telecommunications standards community. This paper introduces the ITU-T STL concepts and functionalities to the wider communications community.  相似文献

This work aims to evaluate the performance of glass/sisal hybrid composites focusing on mechanical (flexural and impact) and dynamic mechanical analyses (DMTA). Hybrid composites with different fiber loadings and different volume ratios between glass and sisal were studied. The effect of the fiber length has also been investigated. The densities of the composites were compared with the theoretical values, showing agreement with the rule of mixtures. The results obtained in the flexural and impact analysis revealed that, in general, the properties were always higher for higher overall reinforcement content. By DMTA, an increase in the storage and loss modulus was found, as well as a shift to higher values for higher glass loading and overall fiber volume. It was also noticed an increase in the efficiency of the filler and the calculated activation energy for the relaxation process in the glass transition region. The fiber length did not significantly change the results observed in all analyses carried out in this work. The calculated adhesion factor increased for higher glass loadings, meaning the equation may not be applied for the system studied and there are other factors, besides adhesion influencing energy dissipation of the composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Antimicrobial activity of edible coating solutions based on chitosan and blends of chitosan–tapioca starch with or without potassium sorbate (KS) addition was studied. The agar well diffusion assay showed an antagonist effect on the efficiency of chitosan against Lactobacillus spp. when KS and/or tapioca starch were present. A salmon slice coating assay showed that the chitosan solution was the best coating since aerobic mesophilic and psychrophilic cell counts were reduced, pH and weight loss remained acceptable throughout refrigerated storage, extending global quality to 6-days. Chitosan–tapioca starch based films reduced Zygosaccharomyces bailii external spoilage in a semisolid product but were not effective against Lactobacillus spp. The results suggest that antibacterial action depended on the application technique, due to the fact that chitosan is more available in a coating solution than in a film matrix. Interactions between chitosan–starch and/or KS could affect film physical properties and the antimicrobial activity of chitosan. The addition of chitosan reduced water vapor permeability and solubility of starch films.  相似文献
