Blister formation in He+-implanted glasses is correlated with the measured helium gas diffusivity. A scries of glasses with diffusivities from ~3 × 10?7 to ~5 × 10?12cm2sec?1 was implanted under nearly identical conditions with 150 keV He+ ions at a flux of 15 μA cm?2 and a nominal sample temperature of 110°C. Glasses with D less than ~1 × 10?9cm2sec?1 were fully blistered, whereas those with D greater than ~3 × 10?8cm2sec?1 showed no surface deformation. Glasses with diffusivities between ~3 × 10?8 and ~1 × 10?9cm2sec?1 had local regions with low density coverage of relatively large blisters. The critical concentration of implanted helium, estimated by comparing experimental data with results from a simple theoretical model, is ~1 × 1019 cm?3, consistent with high pressure solubility measurements. Reemission data at low fluence are qualitatively in agreement with analytical calculations. Implications for CTR technology are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes a method, which combines optical trapping and microfluidic-based droplet generation, for selectively and controllably encapsulating a single target cell or subcellular structure, such as a mitochondrion, into a picoliter- or femtoliter-volume aqueous droplet that is surrounded by an immiscible phase. Once the selected cell or organelle is encased within the droplet, it is stably confined in the droplet and cannot be removed. We demonstrate in droplet the rapid laser photolysis of the single cell, which essentially "freezes" the state that the cell was in at the moment of photolysis and confines the lysate within the small volume of the droplet. Using fluorescein di-beta-d-galactopyranoside, which is a fluorogenic substrate for the intracellular enzyme beta-galactosidase, we also assayed the activity of this enzyme from a single cell following the laser-induced lysis of the cell. This ability to entrap individual selected cells or subcellular organelles should open new possibilities for carrying out single-cell studies and single-organelle measurements.  相似文献

Microcomputers have in recent years become economical for any small business and/or individuals. With their ease of operation, high speed, flexibility, and low cost these units provide the engineer with an extremely valuable tool that enables him to perform the most complex engineering calculation and enhances his ability to make optimization studies of all types with ease. Typical computer systems highlighting the state of the art with recommended features for maximum utilization by engineers are described. Also discussed are programs for calculations such as short circuit, load flow, motor acceleration, voltage drop, sag and tension for overhead distribution, and others. Program development for the small computer is limited only by the resourcefulness and imagination of the user. It is expected that in time these units will become as common in the industry as the slide rule or the programmable calculator.  相似文献

The rates of gestational cannabis use have increased despite limited evidence for its safety in fetal life. Recent animal studies demonstrate that prenatal exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis) promotes intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), culminating in postnatal metabolic deficits. Given IUGR is associated with impaired hepatic function, we hypothesized that Δ9-THC offspring would exhibit hepatic dyslipidemia. Pregnant Wistar rat dams received daily injections of vehicular control or 3 mg/kg Δ9-THC i.p. from embryonic day (E) 6.5 through E22. Exposure to Δ9-THC decreased the liver to body weight ratio at birth, followed by catch-up growth by three weeks of age. At six months, Δ9-THC-exposed male offspring exhibited increased visceral adiposity and higher hepatic triglycerides. This was instigated by augmented expression of enzymes involved in triglyceride synthesis (ACCα, SCD, FABP1, and DGAT2) at three weeks. Furthermore, the expression of hepatic DGAT1/DGAT2 was sustained at six months, concomitant with mitochondrial dysfunction (i.e., elevated p66shc) and oxidative stress. Interestingly, decreases in miR-203a-3p and miR-29a/b/c, both implicated in dyslipidemia, were also observed in these Δ9-THC-exposed offspring. Collectively, these findings indicate that prenatal Δ9-THC exposure results in long-term dyslipidemia associated with enhanced hepatic lipogenesis. We investigate the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) eye-trackers to automatically detect mind wandering—a phenomenon involving a shift in attention from task-related to task-unrelated thoughts—during computerized learning. Study 1 (N?=?135 high-school students) tested the feasibility of COTS eye tracking while students learn biology with an intelligent tutoring system called GuruTutor in their classroom. We could successfully track eye gaze in 75% (both eyes tracked) and 95% (one eye tracked) of the cases for 85% of the sessions where gaze was successfully recorded. In Study 2, we used this data to build automated student-independent detectors of mind wandering, obtaining accuracies (mind wandering F1?=?0.59) substantially better than chance (F1?=?0.24). Study 3 investigated context-generalizability of mind wandering detectors, finding that models trained on data collected in a controlled laboratory more successfully generalized to the classroom than the reverse. Study 4 investigated gaze- and video- based mind wandering detection, finding that gaze-based detection was superior and multimodal detection yielded an improvement in limited circumstances. We tested live mind wandering detection on a new sample of 39 students in Study 5 and found that detection accuracy (mind wandering F1?=?0.40) was considerably above chance (F1?=?0.24), albeit lower than offline detection accuracy from Study 1 (F1?=?0.59), a finding attributable to handling of missing data. We discuss our next steps towards developing gaze-based attention-aware learning technologies to increase engagement and learning by combating mind wandering in classroom contexts.

We present water column thermal structure for two climatically different years: 2012, which experienced abnormally warm spring and summer air temperatures preceded by a relatively low ice winter and 2013, which experienced cooler than average spring and average summer air temperatures and preceded by average ice conditions. Mean bottom water temperatures for the season and during cold water intrusions were significantly warmer in 2012 than 2013 leading to a significantly reduced stratified season in 2012. Cold water intrusions were driven into southern Green Bay by southerly winds while intrusions were terminated when winds switched to persistent northerly winds. 2012 observed a significant increase in northerly winds relative to 2013, decreasing cold water intrusion presence and duration but winds did not fully explain the difference in thermal conditions for southern Green Bay. These cold bottom waters drive stratification in polymictic southern Green Bay while dimictic waters were found to have significantly warmer bottom temperatures during 2012 and a deeper mixed layer. Our observations suggest that relatively shallow (<20?m), seasonally stratified systems may not increase in stratification strength and duration under a warming climate; rather, changing wind climatology and surface heat flux can inform the degree to which the mixing regime can be expected to change and impact stratification and thermal structure of coastal systems. We discuss the biogeochemical implications of different thermal regimes, particularly within the context of multiple drivers of physical water column structure in eutrophic, stratified coastal systems.  相似文献

Six years (2009–2015) of temperature and dissolved oxygen profile data show hypoxic conditions are common in the bottom waters of southern Green Bay, Lake Michigan during the summer. Depleted oxygen concentrations (<5?mg?L?1) affect nearly 70% of the 38 stations sampled representing an area of ~500–600?km2. Stratification typically lasts 2+?months, from late June to early September, and some stations exhibit bottom water hypoxia (<2?mg?L?1) at a frequency of nearly 25% when sampled during this period. A monitoring program initiated in 1986 by the Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District has provided a 23?year, recreational season record (May–September) of continuous (15?min interval) in situ bottom water oxygen and temperature measurements at the Entrance Light station of the Green Bay navigational channel. The duration of the hypoxic season ranges from 2?weeks to over 3?months at this shallow 7?m offshore site. This variability likely results from a combination of thermal stratification, oxygen consumption in deeper waters of the bay, and physical forcing mechanisms that drive cool, oxygen depleted, bottom waters on a southerly trajectory across this sensor. These data suggest the duration of hypoxic conditions may have increased during the stratified season in recent years. Hypoxia in the bay would also appear to be sensitive to relatively small changes in these forces, particularly changes in organic carbon loading and the duration of stratification.  相似文献

The Thames Research Group developed vegetable oil macromonomer (VOMM) technology to combine the advantages of oil-modified polyesters and waterborne systems, and reduce volatile organic compounds in waterborne coatings. VOMMs offer the advantage of temporary plasticization with the potential for crosslinking after film formation. However, incorporating VOMMs into emulsions is challenging because the highly hydrophobic nature of VOMMs restricts their diffusion through the water phase. Miniemulsion polymerization has been used to incorporate highly hydrophobic monomers in waterborne systems. Diffusion limitations are avoided by polymerizing inside the monomer droplets, and to ensure this, droplet stabilization is required. In our study, a soybean oil-based VOMM was used as a copolymerizable hydrophobe in miniemulsion polymerization. Monomer droplets were stabilized prior to polymerization via catastrophic phase inversion to form stable and small droplets (100 nm). Dynamic light scattering analysis was used to confirm miniemulsion stability. A coagulum-free latex was obtained after polymerization. Surface tension studies and light scattering techniques were used to confirm that monomer droplet nucleation was the dominant mechanism. Gel content studies indicated the formation of a highly branched or crosslinked network upon film application. The miniemulsion technique permitted VOMM incorporation as high as 35 wt% into the polymer backbone.  相似文献

In 4 experiments, the authors investigated whether race is perceived to be part of the business leader prototype and, if so, whether it could explain differences in evaluations of White and non-White leaders. The first 2 studies revealed that "being White" is perceived to be an attribute of the business leader prototype, where participants assumed that business leaders more than nonleaders were White, and this inference occurred regardless of base rates about the organization's racial composition (Study 1), the racial composition of organizational roles, the business industry, and the types of racial minority groups in the organization (Study 2). The final 2 studies revealed that a leader categorization explanation could best account for differences in White and non-White leader evaluations, where White targets were evaluated as more effective leaders (Study 3) and as having more leadership potential (Study 4), but only when the leader had recently been given credit for organizational success, consistent with the prediction that leader prototypes are more likely to be used when they confirm and reinforce individualized information about a leader's performance.
