ABSTRACT Epoxy-based systems serve as excellent adhesives to join a wide range of substrates such as metal, ceramics, plastics, etc. The mechanical properties of such systems can be improved considerably by the addition of filler to the epoxy matrix. Herein, polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMS) and poly(methyl/vinyl)silsesquioxane (PMVS) nanosphere were synthesised by hydrolytic condensation of oraganosilane as a precursor in aqueous phase. The epoxy nanocomposite adhesives were prepared by adding different weight percentages (1–4 wt%) of the PS nanospheres. Tensile and compressive strength of the adhesive formulations were studied using the universal testing machine (UTM) and it was observed that the mechanical properties of the composites showed an increasing trend on increasing the filler loading. Adhesive strength of the epoxy composites on mild steel substrate was studied by conducting the lap shear test and EPV-4 exhibited a 31% increase in adhesive strength on the mild steel compared to the neat epoxy. Surface morphology of the epoxy composites were visualised from the SEM images and the composites also showed enhanced thermal conductivity. Higher mechanical and adhesive strength indicates the potential of the prepared nanocomposites to be used as an effective formulation in adhesive-based systems. 相似文献

Understanding composition-structure-property relationships of high-alumina nuclear waste glasses are important for vitrification of nuclear waste at the Hanford Site. Two series of glasses were designed, one with varying Al:Si ratios and the other with (Al + Na):Si ratios based on the international simple glass (ISG, a simplified nuclear waste model glass), with Al2O3 ranging from 0 to 23 mol% (0 to 32 wt%). The glasses were synthesized and characterized using electron probe microanalysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, small angle X-ray scattering, high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry, and infrared spectroscopy. Glasses were crystal free, and the lowest Na2O and Al2O3 glass formed an immiscible glass phase. Evolution of various properties—glass-transition temperature, percentage of 4-coordinated B, enthalpy of glass formation—and infrared spectroscopy results indicate that structural effects differ based on the glass series. 相似文献

A conventional dehairing process with sodium sulfide and lime is a major source of the pollution from the tanning industry. In other words, conventional dehairing processes degrade the hair to the extent that it cannot be recovered; thus, these processes become a major contributor to wastewater pollution. In this study, an attempt has been made to develop a lime and sulfide-free dehairing process using a commercial enzyme formulation with the activation of a silicate salt. A dip and pile method of application has been standardized. The amount of enzyme and sodium metasilicate has also been optimized based on complete removal of hair. Enhancement of enzyme activity by the addition of silicate has been demonstrated through activity measurements. Hair removal is found to be complete using scanning electron microscope analysis. Strength and bulk properties of the experimental leathers are comparable to that of control leathers. The process enjoys a significant reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total solids (TS) by 53 and 26%, respectively. More importantly, the application of enzyme for dehairing results in an 8% area increase in the final leather. Also, the process is proven to be techno-economically feasible. 相似文献
