The increasing energy challenges faced, in particular, by isolated communities, such as insular communities, call for an integrated, flexible and easy-to-apply methodology aiming at providing a list of renewable energy sources) (RES) projects capable to reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions, satisfy future energy forecasts and reach the objectives of international/national energy directives and obligations, as, for example, the ones set by the Kyoto Protocol by 2010. The EU project EMERGENCE 2010 developed such a methodology that is implemented here in the case study of wind parks in the Dodecanese islands in Greece. The results obtained consist of a final list of financially viable RES wind projects, for which various barriers have been previously identified and assessed. The additional advantages of the proposed methodology is that besides providing as an end result a comprehensive list of RES projects adopted to specific criteria and regional priorities, it also allows space for involving – from early stages – the local community and stakeholders in the decision-making process (participatory planning); in this way, the EMERGENCE 2010 methodology may assist towards the RES promotion and public acceptance, the profitability of RES investments and the regional sustainable development.  相似文献

The present work connects transport properties of simple fluids flowing in nanochannels: the diffusion coefficient, the shear viscosity and the thermal conductivity. We used non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations of liquid argon flowing in a nanochannel formed by krypton walls, macroscopically equivalent to the planar Poiseuille flow, at constant temperature. All properties approach bulk values as the channel width increases. As the channel width decreases, the transport properties change dramatically: the diffusion coefficient decreases with the channel width, the shear viscosity increases with the channel width and the thermal conductivity increases with the channel width. The novel result of this work is that, if the size effect of one of the transport properties (say the diffusion coefficient) is known, then all the others can be estimated from results that apply to classic fluid mechanics.  相似文献

A new systematic framework for nonlinear observer design that allows the concurrent estimation of the process state variables together with key unknown process or sensor disturbances is proposed. The nonlinear observer design problem is addressed within a similar methodological framework as the one introduced in [N. Kazantzis, C. Kravaris, Nonlinear observer design using Lyapunov's auxiliary theorem, Systems Control Lett. 34 (1998) 241; A.J. Krener, M. Xiao, Nonlinear observer design in the Siegel domain, SIAM J. Control Optim. 41 (2002) 932.] for state estimation purposes only. From a mathematical standpoint, the problem under consideration is addressed through a system of first-order singular PDEs for which a rather general set of solvability conditions is derived. A nonlinear observer is then designed with a state-dependent gain that is computed from the solution of the system of singular PDEs. Under the aforementioned conditions, both state and disturbance estimation errors converge to zero with assignable rates. The convergence properties of the proposed nonlinear observer are tested through simulation studies in an illustrative example involving a biological reactor.  相似文献

The porting of a speech recognition system to a new language is usually a time-consuming and expensive process since it requires collecting, transcribing, and processing a large amount of language-specific training sentences. This work presents techniques for improved cross-language transfer of speech recognition systems to new target languages. Such techniques are particularly useful for target languages where minimal amounts of training data are available. We describe a novel method to produce a language-independent system by combining acoustic models from a number of source languages. This intermediate language-independent acoustic model is used to bootstrap a target-language system by applying language adaptation. For our experiments, we use acoustic models of seven source languages to develop a target Greek acoustic model. We show that our technique significantly outperforms a system trained from scratch when less than 8 h of read speech is available  相似文献

In the present work, thirteen algae from the Aegean Sea were examined for radical-scavenging activity (RSA) using the DPPH and chemiluminescence (CL) tests. Extracts of the brown alga Taonia atomaria exhibited the best RSA in comparison to the extracts of the other investigated species and approached the activity of powerful antioxidant standards. Column chromatography separation of T. atomaria extract, followed by preparative HPLC, resulted in the isolation of six metabolites, which were identified by spectral analyses (1H NMR, 13C NMR and MS). The isolated metabolites taondiol, isoepitaondiol, stypodiol, stypoldione, sargaquinone and sargaol were found to possess marked RSA.  相似文献

The differentiated services (DiffServ) framework is widely proposed as an efficient method for providing advanced IP services to large‐scale networks, with QoS requirements. However, the provisioning of such services in production networks has proved to be more difficult than initially expected, in defining, setting and verifying appropriate Service Level Agreements (SLAs). GEANT, the Gigabit core pan‐European research network, on a pilot basis introduced ‘Premium IP’ service, offering bounded delay and negligible packet loss to the European National Research & Education Networks (NRENs) that it interconnects. However, large scale provisioning of this new service requires the definition of efficient interaction procedures between administrative domains involved and methods for SLA monitoring. This paper focuses on these issues and presents the experience acquired from the early experiments in GEANT, as an example of hierarchical Gigabit multi‐domain environment, enabled with QoS provisioning to its constituent NRENs. This model scales more efficiently than the common peering Internet Service provider (ISP) commercial paradigm. Finally, we outline other options that promise QoS, such as Layer 2 VPNs in MPLS backbones, with non‐standard (yet) mechanisms. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

As people become increasingly acquainted with information technology, they demand continuous availability of services related to their work or leisure. The era of ubiquitous computing announced long ago is currently turning into an everyday reality at an ever-increasing pace. Alongside the evolution of ubiquitous and nomadic computing, the need of people to access vast amounts of information in a comprehensive and efficient way gives rise to the areas of information visualization and augmented-reality. Such technologies allow for the comprehensive presentation of visual information equally addressing the needs of different categories of people.

In the past 5 years, we have been active in a set of European Research Projects addressing the above-mentioned research directions, with the long-term goal to develop a software platform that will enable context-aware services deploying advanced visualization technology in a series of application domains, such as cultural heritage dissemination, interactive television and retail industry. The multitude of the application domains addressed, as well as the multidisciplinary expertise necessary to create a generic platform was successfully addressed in complementary research activities. In this paper, we present the idea of a platform for context-aware services by exploiting advanced visualization technology and subsequently we briefly review the research projects that delivered valuable pieces in the overall puzzle. Emphasis is put on the practical issues of the implementation and deployment in different application scenarios.  相似文献

GEANT is the pan-European 10 Gbs network interconnecting European national research and educational networks (NRENs). A Premium IP service based on the DiffServ EF PHB has been specified and implemented for this environment to provide quality of service to selected user groups on a Europe-wide scale. Basic features of Premium IP are described, and results from early experiments in the production networks of GEANT and the NRENs are presented. Next steps are proposed for achieving a fast and wide availability of Premium IP in the European research networks.  相似文献

Understanding how lithographic material and processing, affect linewidth roughness (LWR), and finally device operation is of immense importance in future scaled MOS transistors. The goal of this work is to determine the impact of LWR on device operation and to connect material and process parameters with it. To this end, we examine the effects of photoresist polymer length and acid diffusion length on LWR and transistor performance. Through the application of a homemade simulator of the lithographic process, it is shown that photoresists with small polymer chains and small acid diffusion lengths form lines with low LWR and thus lead to transistors with more reliable electrical performance.  相似文献
