Pore diameter control of anodic aluminum oxide with ordered array of nanopores

Highly uniform, self-ordered anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) with an ordered nanoporous array can be effectively formed from industrially pure (99.5%) aluminum sheets through an anodizing program in a mixture solution of sulfuric and oxalic acids. The influences of anodizing variables, such as applied voltage, solution temperature, oxalic acid concentration, agitation rate, and sulfuric acid concentration, on the average pore diameter of AAO were systematically investigated using fractional factorial design (FFD). The applied voltage, and sulfuric acid concentration were found to be the key factors affecting the pore diameter of AAO films in the FFD study. The pore diameter of AAO is regularly increased from ca. 50 to 150 nm when the applied voltage and the concentration of sulfuric acid are gradually increased from 53 to 80 V and from 3.5 to 8 M, respectively. Fine tuning of the pore diameter for AAO films with an ordered, nanoporous, arrayed structure from industrially pure aluminum sheets can be achieved.

Optimum simple step-stress accelerated life tests with censoring

The authors present the optimum simple time-step and failure-step stress accelerated life tests for the case where a prespecified censoring time is involved. An exponential life distribution with a mean that is a log-linear function of stress, and a cumulative exposure model are assumed. The authors obtain the optimum test plans to minimize the asymptotic variance of the maximum-likelihood estimator of the mean life at a design stress. Nomographs for the optimum time-step stress test are also given. Simple step stress test plans with censoring were studied. The optimum failure-step stress test plans are obtained in a closed form, whereas, for the time-step stress test, nomographs are given for finding the optimum plans on the basis of parameters. The parameters must be approximated from experience, similar data, or a preliminary test. For some selected values of the parameters, the effect of incorrect preestimates was studied in terms of the percentage of variance increase. The effect was found to be small     

Regulation of bovine adipose tissue metabolism during lactation. 3. Adaptations of hormone-sensitive and lipoprotein lipases

Activity of lipases in adipose tissue during pregnancy and lactation was investigated in Holstein cows producing 5950 to 10,000 kg milk per 305 d. Activity of cytoplasmic lipoprotein lipase per gram of tissue was 97, 78, 140, 162, 179, and 235% of 30 d prepartum at -15, 15, 30, 60, 180, and 349 d about calving in yr 1. In yr 2, lipoprotein lipase per gram was 100, 259, 838, 791, and 430% of -30 d at -15, 30, 60, 120, and 180 d. Adaptations in activity per milligram cytoplasm protein were similar to those per gram tissue. Hormone-sensitive lipase per milligram protein was 161, 251, 114, 126, and 252% of -30 d when measured at 30, 60, 120, 180, and 240 d postpartum. Activity per gram of tissue responded similarly to the lactation state. Lipoprotein lipase is thus not a large contributor to the peripartum bovine adipose adaptation but is important in reattainment of body composition in mid and late lactation. Hormone-sensitive lipase is also increased during peak and midlactation. The pattern of elevated activity of these oppositely directed lipases reflects the dichotomous forces of milk fat production and body fat recovery acting on adipose tissue of lactating heifers.
