Speech Sounds Perception Test: A rational response strategy can invalidate the test results.

The Speech Sounds Perception Test (a component of both the Adult and Midrange versions of Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery) is structured such that correct responses can be determined rationally. If a patient identifies and responds according to that structure, the validity of the test is compromised. Posttest interview is suggested as a simple and immediately applicable solution. Diffusion controlled stress rupture of polycrystalline materials

The high temperature stress rupture process in polycrystalline solids is examined in terms of grain boundary parting by vacancy condensation at the tip of a crack within the boundary. The gradient for diffusion of these defects is considered in the model to arise from the stress gradient in advance of the flaw tip. A rupture stress function is derived which is shown to closely describe the stress rupture behavior of a number of metals and high temperature alloys.     

Marketing the MIS

The promise of management information systems has not yet been realized; low utilization rates by line decision-makers may be one cause. This paper suggests that the effort of marketing the MIS is as important as the work of both the MIS design and implementation phases combined. Various MIS “markets” are segmented, and marketing mix strategies which could encourage greater MIS usage are developed. An application of these marketing strategies for an advanced MIS is provided as an illustration.     

From switched-capacitors to digital filters

Digital filters have been realized with inexpensive reverse switched capacitors and expensive special purpose digital computers. Analysis shows that the semi-null inherent in any switched capacitor can be eliminated with an analog-to-digital converter realization which is intermediate in cost. The main emphasis is on band-pass filter realization by means of the overlapping spectra method and a preferred ordering of the cascaded filter sections. Band-rejection filter realization is considered for completeness.     

Time and false electromyographic feedback: Effect on tension headache.

Measured frontalis EMG amplitude in 20 19–38 yr old Ss with tension headaches. Of these, 10 were given auditory feedback that accurately reflected EMG levels, and the other 10 received false feedback. Ss receiving relevant feedback significantly decreased both EMG and number of headaches as compared to controls. Controls did, however, show decreasing trends in the 2 variables. Fundamental frequency analysis of laminated rectangular plates by differential quadrature method

In this paper a differential quadrature method is presented for computation of the fundamental frequency of a thin laminated rectangular plate. The partial differential equations of motion for free vibration are solved for the boundary conditions by approximating them by substituting weighted polynomials functions for the differential operator. By doing this, the coupled partial differential equations of motion are reduced to sets of homogeneous algebraic equations. These sets of homogeneous algebraic equations are combined to give a set of general eigenvalue equations for the problem. Three types of laminated plate problems, which include symmetric, antisymmetric cross-ply, and symmetric, balanced angle-ply laminates, are analysed by the method and the results obtained are compared with solutions reported in the literature for other numerical methods. The effects of the level of discretization on the accuracy and rate of convergence of the results are also discussed. The method presented gives accurate results and is found to use not much computer time.
