The covariance matrices associated with each state of health or disease from a previous study are used as the basis of an image staining display technique for aid in quantitative differential diagnosis. A state of health or disease is chosen by the clinician: this selects the covariance matrix from the data base. A region of interest (ROI) is then scrolled through an abdominal B-scan. For each position of the ROI a point in the four-dimensional feature space is calculated. A natural measure of the distance of this point from the center of mass (multivariate mean) of the disease class is calculated in terms of the covariance matrix of this class; this measure is the Mahalanobis distance. The confidence level for acceptance or rejection of the hypothesized disease class is obtained from the probability distribution of this distance, the T(2) probability law. This confidence level is color coded and used as a color stain that overlays the original scan at that position. The variability of the calculated features is studied as a function of ROI size, or the spatial resolution of the color coded image, and it is found that for an ROI in the neighborhood of 4 cm(2) most of the variability due to the finite number of independent samples (speckles) is averaged out, leaving the "noise floor" associated with inter- and intra-patient variability. ROIs on the order of 1 cm(2) may result with technical advances in B-scan resolution. A small number of points on organ boundaries are entered by the user, to fit with arcs of ellipses to be used to switch between organ (liver and kidney) data bases as the ROI encounters the boundary. By selecting in turn various state-of-health or state-of-disease databases, such images of confidence levels may be used for quantitative differential diagnosis. The method is not limited to ultrasound, being applicable in principle to features obtained from any modality or multimodality combination.  相似文献

Optimization criteria are addressed for lossless and real systems, and their basic characteristics are compared with other topologies. The ability of ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy (UVRRS) to determine structural, environmental, and analytical information concerning low-concentration aqueous biomolecules makes it a powerful bioanalytical and biophysical technique. Unfortunately, its utility has been limited by experimental requirements that preclude in situ or in vivo studies in most cases. We have developed the first high-performance fiber-optic probes suitable for long-term use in pulsed UVRRS applications in the deep- UV (DUV, 205-250 nm). The probes incorporate recently developed improved ultraviolet (IUV) fibers that do not exhibit the rapid solarization and throughput decay that previously hampered the use of optical fibers for delivering pulsed, DUV light. A novel 90 degrees mirrored collection geometry is used to overcome the inner-filtering effects that plague flush-probe geometries. The IUV fibers are characterized with respect to their efficacy at transmitting pulsed, DUV laser light, and prototype probes are used to obtain pulsed UVRRS data of aromatic amino acids, proteins, and hormones at low concentrations with 205-240-nm pulsed excitation. Efficient probe geometries and fabrication methods are presented. The performance of the probes in examining resonance-enhanced Raman signals from absorbing chromophores is investigated, and the optimal excitation wavelength is shown to be significantly red-shifted from the maximum of the resonance Raman enhancement profile. Generally applicable procedures for determining optimal experimental conditions are also introduced.  相似文献

We calculate the time-resolved flux of photons transmitted across an optically turbid slab containing a partially absorbing inclusion. An analytical expression is obtained for the flux at a detector positioned opposite a point source (at a distance equal to the thickness of the slab) when the center of the inclusion lies on the line connecting those points. The calculation employs a discrete-time lattice random-walk model of photon transport. The resulting expression is used to assess the affects of time resolution on the detectability of the inclusion.  相似文献

A study on combined manual materials-handling tasks performed on floors under three friction levels was conducted. Eight male subjects participated in the study. The maximum acceptable weight of handling, including lifting, carrying for 3m, lowering, and walking 3m back at twice per minute was determined. The subject then performed the same tasks for 10 min. Heart rate, Vo2, energy efficiency, perceived sense of slip, and rating of perceived exertion for whole body strain were measured. The results showed that the effects of friction level on the maximum acceptable weights of handling, perceived sense of slip, Vo2, and energy efficiency were statistically significant (p相似文献

The problem of estimation of mean scatterer spacing in an object containing regularly spaced structures is addressed. An autoregressive (AR) spectral estimation method is compared with a conventional fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based approach for this task. Regularly spaced structures produce a periodicity in the power spectrum of ultrasonic backscatter. This periodicity is manifested as a peak in the cepstrum. A phantom was constructed for comparison of the two methods. It contained regularly spaced nylon filaments. It also contained randomly positioned glass spheres that produced incoherent backscatter. In an experiment in which this target was interrogated using broadband ultrasound, the AR spectral estimate offered considerable improvement over the FFT when the analysis gate length was on the order of the structural dimension. Advantages included improved resolution, reduction in bias and variance of scatterer spacing estimates, and greater resistance to ringing artifacts. Data were also acquired from human liver in vivo. AR spectral estimates on human data exhibited a decreased dependence on gate length. These results offer promise for enhanced spatial resolution and accuracy in ultrasonic tissue characterization and nondestructive evaluation of materials.  相似文献
