Integration of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with a magnetically ordered material provides an additional degree of freedom through which the resulting exotic quantum states can be controlled. Here, an experimental observation is reported of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in a magnetically-doped topological insulator grown on the antiferromagnetic insulator Cr2O3. The exchange coupling between the two materials is investigated using field-cooling-dependent magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry. Both techniques reveal strong interfacial interaction between the antiferromagnetic order of the Cr2O3 and the magnetic topological insulator, manifested as an exchange bias when the sample is field-cooled under an out-of-plane magnetic field, and an exchange spring-like magnetic depth profile when the system is magnetized within the film plane. These results identify antiferromagnetic insulators as suitable candidates for the manipulation of magnetic and topological order in topological insulator films.  相似文献

Process intensification (PI) of distillation using a microchannel distillation (MCD) device successfully reduced the height of a theoretical plate (HETP) in separating propane and propylene to 1.2 cm, representing 10 theoretical stages. Mass transfer is enhanced using thin wicking structures that are 0.17 mm thick in counterflow with vapor. Liquid is segregated in the wicks by applying a siphon relative to the vapor phase, which also enables the device to operate horizontally. A scalable device containing 11 wicks was operated cryogenically in total reflux. The HETP varied between 1.2 and 4.5 cm, representing a dramatic reduction over commercial structured packings and comparable to other PI approaches. Significant improvements are expected with further development. Potential application for intensified distillation processes include distributed manufacturing and difficult separations involving close boiling compounds and meeting high purity specifications. We report the design and validation of new TaqMan((R)) assays for microbial source tracking based on the amplification of fecal 16S rRNA marker sequences from uncultured cells of the order Bacteroidales. The assays were developed for the detection and enumeration of non-point source input of fecal pollution to watersheds. The quantitative "universal"Bacteroidales assay BacUni-UCD detected all tested stool samples from human volunteers (18 out of 18), cat (7 out of 7), dog (8 out of 8), seagull (10/10), cow (8/8), horse (8/8), and wastewater effluent (14/14). The human assay BacHum-UCD discriminated fully between human and cow stool samples but did not detect all stool samples from human volunteers (12/18). In addition, there was 12.5% detection of dog stool (1/8), but no cross-reactivity with cat, horse, or seagull fecal samples. In contrast, all wastewater samples were positive for the BacHum-UCD marker, supporting its designation as 100% sensitive for mixed-human source identification. The cow-specific assay BacCow-UCD fully discriminated between cow and human stool samples. There was 38% detection of horse stool (3/8), but no cross-specificity with any of the other animal stool samples tested. The dog assay BacCan-UCD discriminated fully between dog and cow stool or seagull guano samples and detected 62.5% stool samples from dogs (5/8). There was some cross-reactivity with 22.2% detection of human stool (4/18), 14.3% detection of cat stool (1/7), and 28.6% detection of wastewater samples (4/14). After validation using stool samples, single-blind tests were used to further demonstrate the efficacy of the developed markers; all assays were sensitive, reproducible, and accurate in the quantification of mixed fecal sources present in aqueous samples. Finally, the new assays were compared with previously published sequences, which showed the new methodologies to be more specific and sensitive. Using Bayes' Theorem, we calculated the conditional probability that the four assays would correctly identify general and host-specific fecal pollution in a specific watershed in California for which 73 water samples had been analyzed. Such an approach allows for a direct comparison of the efficacy of different MST methods, including those based on library-dependent methodologies. For the universal marker BacUni-UCD, the probability that fecal pollution is present when the marker is detected was 1.00; the probability that host-specific pollution is present was 0.98, 0.84, and 0.89 for the human assay HF160F, the cow assay BacCow-UCD, and the dog assay BacCan-UCD, respectively. The application of these markers should provide meaningful information to assist with efforts to identify and control sources of fecal pollution to impaired watersheds.  相似文献

Recent laser upgrades on the Hot Helicon Experiment at West Virginia University have enabled multiplexed simultaneous measurements of the ion velocity distribution function at a single location, expanding our capabilities in laser-induced fluorescence diagnostics. The laser output is split into two beams, each modulated with an optical chopper and injected perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field. Light from the crossing point of the beams is transported to a narrow-band photomultiplier tube filtered at the fluorescence wavelength and monitored by two lock-in amplifiers, each referenced to one of the two chopper frequencies.  相似文献

Poly(aryl ether ketone)s (PAEKs) are promising materials for harsh environments, such as in high-temperature steam applications. Here, the effect of high-temperature steam on the crystallinity and mechanical properties of existing poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and PEKK(T/I) polymers is investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray scattering or diffraction (WAXD), and dynamic mechanical analysis experiments show these materials undergo significant crystallization and reorganization after prolonged exposure to steam and suffer from embrittlement. In addition, we show that xanthydrol-based crosslinks can provide the dimensional stability and stabilize the PEKK crystal structure. Mechanical tests demonstrate that the ductility is preserved for longer exposures to steam compared to neat PEKK, whereas DSC and WAXD data indicate xanthydrol crosslinks effectively stabilize the crystal structure against steam-assisted crystallization. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Problem, research strategy, and findings: We examine the post-plan impacts of the Sacramento region's 2004 Blueprint, a widely celebrated regional process, to better understand the impact of regional planning on local development patterns. We assess whether residential development after the plan was adopted (2004-2011) occurred in neighborhoods that better met Blueprint principles. We also assess whether the locations of post-plan residential development better met the priorities of Blueprint than pre-plan development (2001-2003), comparing these results by jurisdictions. The focus on residential developments limits our assessment; our use of census tract data as a proxy for neighborhood may also be problematic. We find that neighborhoods that best met Blueprint principles did not receive most new residential development. Moreover, highly rated neighborhoods received less residential development after the regional plan was adopted than before. However, some residential development did locate in neighborhoods that better met some plan principles: transportation choice, housing choice and diversity, and use of existing assets. In addition, development in some jurisdictions did follow Blueprint more than others. We conclude that some principles are easier to implement in some regions and in some local jurisdictions because of place-specific needs or the parochial interests of local jurisdictions.

Takeaway for practice: Planners should continually promote and advocate for regional principles while encouraging plan adoption at the local level by giving priority to principles with the most local support or support in specific jurisdictions as they negotiate interests in conflict. Planners should evaluate plan impacts to improve their own effectiveness regionally and to improve regional planning processes in general.  相似文献

Electrophoretic motion of a charged droplet in a dielectric fluid under an electric field has been investigated experimentally for use as a microdroplet actuation method. The effects of the droplet size, electric field strength, and electrolyte concentration and ion species on the charging of an aqueous droplet have been examined. The amount of electrical charging has been measured by two different methods: indirect measurement using the image analysis of droplet motion and direct measurement using the electrometer. Quantitative comparison of the droplet charge measured experimentally and the theoretical value of a perfectly conductive sphere shows that an aqueous droplet is less charged than the corresponding perfectly conductive sphere. The limiting effect on electrical charging is more significant for an electrolyte droplet, and the effect is positively correlated to the electrolyte concentration rather than the ion species. This implies that the low electrical conductivity of water is not a major cause of the limiting effect. The scaling law of the charging amount for a deionized water droplet nearly follows that of the perfect conductor, whereas for an electrolyte droplet, the scaling law exponent is slightly higher. Some advantages and potentials of the current droplet actuation method are also discussed in comparison with the conventional ones.  相似文献

As the applications of ultrasonic thermal therapies expand, the design of the high-intensity array must address both the energy delivery of the main beam and the character and relevance of off-target beam energy. We simulate the acoustic field performance of a selected set of circular arrays organized by array format, including flat versus curved arrays, periodic versus random arrays, and center void diameter variations. Performance metrics are based on the -3-dB focal main lobe (FML) positioning range, axial grating lobe (AGL) temperatures, and side lobe levels. Using finite-element analysis, we evaluate the relative heating of the FML and the AGLs. All arrays have a maximum diameter of 100λ, with element count ranging from 64 to 1024 and continuous wave frequency of 1.5 MHz. First, we show that a 50% spherical annulus produces focus beam side lobes which decay as a function of lateral distance at nearly 87% of the exponential rate of a full aperture. Second, for the arrays studied, the efficiency of power delivery over the -3-dB focus positioning range for spherical arrays is at least 2-fold greater than for flat arrays; the 256-element case shows a 5-fold advantage for the spherical array. Third, AGL heating can be significant as the focal target is moved to its distal half-intensity depth from the natural focus. Increasing the element count of a randomized array to 256 elements decreases the AGL-to-FML heating ratio to 0.12 at the distal half-intensity depth. Further increases in element count yield modest improvements. A 49% improvement in the AGL-to-peak heating ratio is predicted by using the Sumanaweera spiral element pattern with randomization.  相似文献
