In the scheme of land-groove recording in magneto-optic disk data-storage systems, it has been shown that an optimum groove depth exists at which the cross talk from adjacent tracks diminishes. Crosstalk cancellation, however, is very sensitive to various parameters of the system, and, in particular, the presence of substrate birefringence can have devastating effects on system performance. We analyze the origin of the observed effects by using scalar diffraction theory, and we show the reasons behind cross-talk cancellation. We also explain the relation between substrate birefringence and cross talk in simple analytical terms. Extensive computer simulations have been performed to verify and extend the theoretical results of this paper; the results of some of these simulations are also presented. 相似文献

A formalism is given in which the optical field generated by a near-field optical aperture is described as an analytic expansion over a complete set of optical modes. This vectoral solution preserves the divergent behavior of the near field and the dipolar nature of the far field. Numerical calculation of the fields requires only evaluation of a well behaved, one-dimensional integral. While many of the developments made in high-throughput proteomics were originally applied to procaryotic and simple eucaryotic organisms, the analysis of biofluids became increasingly important as the prospect of using proteomics to discover novel biomarkers became realized. Biofluids have represented a unique challenge to proteomics as they are often present only in small amounts and, particularly in the cases of serum and plasma, can have protein concentration ranges that differ by ten orders of magnitude. While the discovery of authentic, clinically useful biomarkers in the proteomics era has been lacking, there have been a number of significant developments in the ability to more comprehensively characterize biofluid proteomes. The rapid pace of these developments suggest that the eventual discovery of clinically validate biomarkers using proteomic technologies still has a bright future. 相似文献

Wegener's Granulomatosis (WG) is an idiopathic granulomatosis autoimmune vasculitis that primarily affects small vessels and is associated with glomerulonephritis and pulmonary granulomatous vasculitis. Anti‐neutrophil cytoplasmic auto‐antibodies (cANCA) against proteinase‐3 are used to identify WG, but ANCA titers are not present in some patients with the localized disease. The objective of this study was to develop an antibody array to help identify protein expression patterns in serum from patients with WG as compared to normals. The arrays were tested for limits of detection, background, and cross reactivity using standard proteins. The arrays were hybridized with either normal patient serum (n = 30) or with serum samples from a population of WG patients (n = 26) that were age and sex matched. Data analysis and curve fitting of the standard dilution series calculated r2 values and determined a sensitivity of <50 pg/mL for the majority of proteins. A total of 24 proteins were assessed. Several statistically significant increases (p<0.05) were seen in the expression of: angiotensin converting enzyme‐I, IFN‐γ, IL‐8, s‐ICAM‐1 and s‐VCAM in WG patients as compared to controls. Utilizing the antibody microarray technology has led to the identification of potential biomarkers of vascular injury in the serum of WG patients. 相似文献

An analytical method of matching the mode of an input laser to the lowest-order mode of a passive resonant ring laser gyro is described, as are the steps in determining the location and focal length of cylindrical mode matching lenses. Results were obtained with no mode matching, with a compromise spherical lens, with horizontal mode matching only, and with the proper cylindrical mode matching lenses. Compared with no mode matching, the latter case shows that the amplitude of the lowest-order mode is increased approximately 2.5 times. In addition, the number and intensity of higher-order modes are reduced to near zero, and the relative intensity of the lowest-order mode to the higher-order mode increased from approximately 5 to approximately 60 times greater. 相似文献

Reducing noise in medical images has been an important issue of research and development for medical diagnosis, patient treatment, and validation of biomedical hypotheses. Noise inherently exists in medical and biological images due to the acquisition and transmission in any imaging devices. Being different from image enhancement, the purpose of image restoration is the process of removing noise from a degraded image in order to recover as much as possible its original version. This paper presents a statistically supervised approach for medical image restoration using the concept of multiple-point geostatistics. Neurodegenerative diseases induce morphological and chemical alterations in well-characterized regions of the brain. Understanding their pathological processes requires the use of methods that assess both morphological and chemical alterations in the tissues. In the past, microprobe approaches such as scanning electron microscopy combined with an X-ray spectrometer, Proton induced X-ray emission, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and laser microprobe mass analysis have been used for the study of pathological human brain with limited success. At the present, new SIMS instruments have been developed, such as the NanoSIMS-50 ion microprobe, that allow the simultaneous identification of five elements with high sensitivity, at subcellular spatial resolution (about 50-100 nm with the Cs(+) source and about 150-200 nm with O(-) source). Working in scanning mode, 2D distribution of five elements (elemental maps) can be obtained, thus providing their exact colocalization. The analysis can be performed on semithin or ultrathin embedded sections. The possibility of using transmission electron microscopy and SIMS on the same ultrathin sections allows the correlation between structural and analytical observations at subcellular and ultrastructural level to be established. Our observations on pathological brain areas allow us to establish that the NanoSIMS-50 ion microprobe is a highly useful instrument for the imaging of the morphological and chemical alterations that take place in these brain areas. In the human brain our results put forward the subcellular distribution of iron-ferritin-hemosiderin in the hippocampus of Alzheimer disease patients. In the thalamus of transgenic mice, our results have shown the presence of Ca-Fe mineralized amyloid deposits. 相似文献
