The ACM Code of Ethics asserts that computing professionals have an ethical responsibility to minimize the negative consequences of information and communication technologies (ICT). Negative consequences are rarely intended, but they can often be foreseen with careful sociotechnical analysis in advance of system building. Motivated by an interest in extremely complex sociotechnical contexts (e.g., mortgage lending and automated trading) where ICT appears to be having negative consequences in addition to many benefits, this paper identifies and evaluates future-oriented problem analysis and solution design tools in three potentially relevant literatures: 1) ICT ethics, 2) environmental sustainability, and 3) technology hazards. Several promising future-oriented technology analysis techniques (e.g., anticipatory technology ethics, technology roadmapping, morphological analysis, and control structure analysis) were found and are discussed in this paper, but much work remains to be done to customize them, integrate them, and codify them for use in education and high-quality IS research on very complex sociotechnical contexts like the global financial network.  相似文献

Virtualization is the cornerstone of the developing third-party compute industry, allowing cloud providers to instantiate multiple virtual machines (VMs) on a single set of physical resources. Customers utilize cloud resources alongside unknown and untrusted parties, creating the co-resident threat—unless perfect isolation is provided by the virtual hypervisor, there exists the possibility for unauthorized access to sensitive customer information through the exploitation of covert side channels. This paper presents co-resident watermarking, a traffic analysis attack that allows a malicious co-resident VM to inject a watermark signature into the network flow of a target instance. This watermark can be used to exfiltrate and broadcast co-residency data from the physical machine, compromising isolation without reliance on internal side channels. As a result, our approach is difficult to defend against without costly underutilization of the physical machine. We evaluate co-resident watermarkingunder a large variety of conditions, system loads and hardware configurations, from a local laboratory environment to production cloud environments (Futuregrid and the University of Oregon’s ACISS). We demonstrate the ability to initiate a covert channel of 4 bits per second, and we can confirm co-residency with a target VM instance in $<$ 10 s. We also show that passive load measurement of the target and subsequent behavior profiling is possible with this attack. We go on to consider the detectability of co-resident watermarking, extending our scheme to create a subtler watermarking attack by imitating legitimate cloud customer behavior. Our investigation demonstrates the need for the careful design of hardware to be used in the cloud.  相似文献

The viewing of video increasingly occurs in a wide range of public and private environments via a range of static and mobile devices. The proliferation of content on demand and the diversity of the viewing situations means that delivery systems can play a key role in introducing audiences to contextually relevant content of interest whilst maximising the viewing experience for individual viewers. However, for video delivery systems to do this, they need to take into account the diversity of the situations where video is consumed, and the differing viewing experiences that users desire to create within them. This requires an ability to identify different contextual viewing situations as perceived by users. This paper presents the results from a detailed, multi-method, user-centred field study with 11 UK-based users of video-based content. Following a review of the literature (to identify viewing situations of interest on which to focus), data collection was conducted comprising observation, diaries, interviews and self-captured video. Insights were gained into whether and how users choose to engage with content in different public and private spaces. The results identified and validated a set of contextual cues that characterise distinctive viewing situations. Four archetypical viewing situations were identified: ‘quality time’, ‘opportunistic planning’, ‘sharing space but not content’ and ‘opportunistic self-indulgence’. These can be differentiated in terms of key contextual factors: solitary/shared experiences, public/private spaces and temporal characteristics. The presence of clear contextual cues provides the opportunity for video delivery systems to better tailor content and format to the viewing situation or additionally augment video services through social media in order to provide specific experiences sensitive to both temporal and physical contexts.  相似文献

Measurements have been carried out in the developing and fully developed regions of a free, axisymmetric, isothermal, air-water, bubbly jet. Three experiments have been conducted at a fixed jet-exit Reynolds number and gas superficial velocity using three different bubble injector assemblies producing bubbles of moderately different average sizes and size distributions. The volume fraction of the bubbly jet flow examined in this study is low and the resulting dispersed flow is dilute. A one-component Phase-Doppler Velocimetry system has been employed to measure bubble size and velocity non-intrusively. Visual data collected simultaneously with the light-scattering measurements were analyzed with the aid of image processing and used to verify the trends portrayed by the light-scattering measurements and to determine average bubble size. Our measurements show that, even in the dilute flow examined here, differences in initial bubble-size and size distribution can influence the RMS velocity fluctuations of the bubbles, particularly in the jet development region. The average bubble velocities are less sensitive. Evidence that the development pattern of the jet near the exit is affected by the presence of the bubbles is also presented. Near the exit of the jet, bubbles are shown to be ejected laterally outside the jet due to the significant lift force caused by the high velocity gradient in the axisymmetric shear layer. The observed sensitivity of the bubble flow to size-related parameters and initial conditions in this dilute case, indicates that discrepancies in previous measurements of dispersed, bubbly flows could be attributed to different size characteristics and/or initial conditions.  相似文献

Microsomal membrane preparations from the developing seeds of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius, var. Gila) and turnip-rape (Brassica campestris, var. Bele) catalyzed the assembly of triacylglycerols (triglycerides) from sn-glycerol 3-phosphate and acyl-CoA. The membrane preparations were used to assess the acyl specificity properties of the initial acylating enzymes—glycerol 3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) and 1-acylglycerol 3-phosphate acyltransferase (lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase, LPAAT)—that are responsible for the fatty acids at positions sn-1 and sn-2 of the sn-triacylglycerol, respectively. In spectrophotometric assays it was possible to evaluate, to some extent, how these enzymes will utilize unusual and foreign fatty acids that are not normally found in these particular plant species. The acylating enzymes from both plants used, to varying extents, a comprehensive range of acyl-CoA donor species and some kinetic properties of the substrates involved are presented. The enzymes from safflower, however, were generally the more selective, whereas the turnip-rape was less particular and could utilize a range of acyl substrates. The enzymes from both plants hardly utilized erucate (C22∶1), and the significance of this is discussed in terms of mechanisms which have evolved in order to exclude certain, perhaps detrimental, fatty acids from structural membrane lipids and dedicate them to storage lipid assembly. The ability of the microsomal preparations, from the developing seeds of both plants, to synthesize cocoabutter type fats was investigated. Microsomal membranes were incubated with glycerol 3-phosphate and equimolar amounts of palmitate, oleate and stearate. Safflower preparations catalyzed the construction of sn-triacylglycerol with largely palmitate, oleate and stearate in positions sn-1, 2 and 3, respectively. The selectivity for acyl species in rape was less pronounced, however, substantial saturated-unsaturated-saturated oils were still produced. The results are discussed in terms of the acyl selectivity properties of the glycerol acylating enzymes. It is evident that given the correct composition of fatty acids, the plant can produce cocoabutter or other exotic fats.  相似文献

Analysis of the Insect OS-D-Like Gene Family   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
Insect OS-D-like proteins, also known as chemosensory (CSP) or sensory appendage proteins (SAP), are broadly expressed in various insect tissues, where they are thought to bind short to medium chain length fatty acids and their derivatives. Although their specific function remains uncertain, OS-D-like members have been isolated from sensory organs (including the sensillum lymph in some cases), and a role in olfaction similar to that of the insect odorant binding proteins (OBP) has been suggested for some. We have identified 15 new OS-D-like sequences: four from cDNA clones described herein and 11 from sequence databases. The os-d-like genes from the Anopheles gambiae, Apis mellifera, Drosophila melanogaster, and Drosophila pseudoobscura genomes typically have single, small introns with a conserved splice site. Together with all family members entered on GenBank, a total of 70 OS-D-like proteins, representing the insect orders Diptera, Dictyoptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, and Phasmatodea, were analyzed. A neighbor joining distance phenogram identified several protein similarity classes that were characterized by highly conserved sequence motifs, including (A) N-terminal YTTKYDN(V/I)(N/D)(L/V)DEIL, (B) central DGKELKXX(I/L)PDAL, and (C) C-terminal KYDP. In contrast, three similarity classes were characterized by their diversion from these conserved motifs. The functional importance of conserved amino acid residues is discussed in relation to the crystal and NMR structures of MbraCSPA6.  相似文献

Plastic boss and screw fasteners are an economical means of securing automotive components, such as instrument or body panels. However, new materials and/or suboptimal design present challenges to the boss/screw effectiveness. Failure of a boss/screw can result is loss of functional performance or increased squeak and rattle. Failure is often controlled by what occurs during the initial thread‐forming process. Thus, the goal of this paper is to develop an FEA model to elucidate the thread‐forming process so that we can facilitate subsequent design and/or process optimization, and understand potential failure modes. The FEA must accommodate nonlinear couplings, such as large strain and heat transfer. Heat generation is present in the forms of interfacial shear heating and plastic work associated with the large deformation of the interface between the boss and screw. Strain rate‐dependent materials are included using the Eyring theory for plastic flow of polymeric materials. 5-Enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase, the productof the Escherichia coli aroA gene, has been overproduced inE.coli BL21(DE3) under the control of the T7 gene 10 promoterand ribosome binding site, to a level of {small tilde}50% oftotal cell protein. EPSP synthase is the primary target of thepost-emergence herbicide, glyphosate, commonly known as RoundupTM.A simple two step purification is described, which results in99% pure homogeneous protein (as determined by PAGE). The integrityof the protein has been compared with previously characterizedprotein from .E.coli AB2829(pKD501) by determination of itskinetic parameters, N-terminal protein and DNA sequences, aminoacid analysis and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. This new overproducingstrain readily provides the gram quantities of highly pure proteinrequired for NMR studies of the active site and the developmentof novel time-resolved solid-state NMR techniques currentlyunderway in this laboratory.  相似文献

Biodiesel, defined as the mono-alkyl esters of vegetable oils and animal fats is, has undergone rapid development and acceptance as an alternative diesel fuel. Kinematic viscosity is one of the fuel properties specified in biodiesel standards, with 40 °C being the temperature at which this property is to be determined and ranges of acceptable kinematic viscosity given. While data on kinematic viscosity of biodiesel and related materials at higher temperatures are available in the literature, this work reports on the kinematic viscosity of biodiesel and a variety of fatty acid alkyl esters at temperatures from 40 °C down to −10 °C in increments of 5 °C using the appropriately modified standard reference method ASTM D445. Investigating the low-temperature properties of biodiesel, including viscosity, of biodiesel and its components is important because of the problems associated with the use of biodiesel under these conditions. Such data may aid in developing biodiesel fuels optimized for fatty ester composition. An index termed here the low-temperature viscosity ratio (LTVR) using data at 0 °C and 40 °C (divide viscosity value at 0 °C by viscosity value at 40 °C) was used to evaluate individual compounds but also mixtures by their low-temperature viscosity behavior. Compounds tested included a variety of saturated, monounsaturated, diunsaturated and triunsaturated fatty esters, methyl ricinoleate, in which the OH group leads to a significant increase in viscosity as well as triolein, as well as some fatty alcohols and alkanes. Esters of oleic acid have the highest viscosity of all biodiesel components that are liquids at low temperatures. The behavior of blends of biodiesel and some fatty esters with a low-sulfur diesel fuel was also investigated.  相似文献

The effects of the styrene–butadiene (SB) diblock copolymer on the viscoelastic properties of styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) triblock copolymers were examined in both in the the neat state and within specific product applications. The addition of the SB diblock copolymer into a pure SBS triblock copolymer resulted in a significant decrease in the plateau storage modulus and a quantitative linear rise in tan delta. In a pure triblock, in which all endblocks are anchored in polystyrene domains, all entanglements are physically trapped. The SB diblock embodies untrapped polybutadiene endblocks that are able to relax stress by chain reptation through the rubbery polybutadiene matrix. The SB diblock copolymer quantitatively lowered the microphase separation temperature (MST) of the SBS triblock copolymer. These changes in linear viscoelastic behavior manifest themselves into a reduction in the efficiency and performance of the SBS triblock copolymer in asphalt pavement binders and hot-melt adhesive blends. Specifically, the SB diblock diminished the complex shear modulus and elasticity of a polymer-modified asphalt, which translated into lower predicted rutting specification values. The increase in diblock content altered the viscoelastic response of the hot-melt adhesive blend, translating into a reduction in the shear holding power and shear adhesion failure temperature. The lack of network participation, coupled with the relaxation of the polybutadiene endblocks, accounts for the lower strength and greater temperature susceptibility of the diblock-containing systems. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
