One of the main goals in radiobiology research is to enhance radiotherapy effectiveness without provoking any increase in toxicity. In this context, it has been proposed that electromagnetic fields (EMFs), known to be modulators of proliferation rate, enhancers of apoptosis and inductors of genotoxicity, might control tumor recruitment and, thus, provide therapeutic benefits. Scientific evidence shows that the effects of ionizing radiation on cellular compartments and functions are strengthened by EMF. Although little is known about the potential role of EMFs in radiotherapy (RT), the radiosensitizing effect of EMFs described in the literature could support their use to improve radiation effectiveness. Thus, we hypothesized that EMF exposure might enhance the ionizing radiation effect on tumor cells, improving the effects of RT. The aim of this paper is to review reports of the effects of EMFs in biological systems and their potential therapeutic benefits in radiotherapy.  相似文献

A Bayesian optimal screening method (BOSc) is proposed to classify an individual into one of two groups, based on the observation of pairs of covariates, namely the expression level of pairs of genes (previously selected by a specific method, among the thousands of genes present in the microarray) measured using DNA microarrays technology. The method is general and can be applied to any correlated pair of screening variables, either with a bivariate normal distribution or which can be transformed into a bivariate normal.1 Results on microarray data sets (Leukemia, Prostate and Breast) show that BOSc performance is competitive with, and in some cases significantly better than, quadratic and linear discriminant analyses and support vector machines classifiers. BOSc provides flexible parametric decision rules. Finally, the screening classifier allows the calculation of operating characteristics while addressing information about the prevalence of the disease or type of disease, which is an advantage over other classification methods.  相似文献

Optoacoustic (OA, photoacoustic) imaging synergistically combines rich optical contrast with the resolution of ultrasound within light-scattering biological tissues. Contrast agents have become essential to boost deep-tissue OA sensitivity and fully exploit the capabilities of state-of-the-art OA imaging systems, thus facilitating the clinical translation of this modality. Inorganic particles with sizes of several microns can also be individually localized and tracked, thus enabling new applications in drug delivery, microrobotics, or super-resolution imaging. However, significant concerns have been raised regarding the low bio-degradability and potential toxic effects of inorganic particles. Bio-based, biodegradable nano- and microcapsules consisting of an aqueous core with clinically-approved indocyanine green (ICG) and a cross-linked casein shell obtained in an inverse emulsion approach are introduced. The feasibility to provide contrast-enhanced in vivo OA imaging with nanocapsules as well as localizing and tracking individual larger microcapsules of 4–5 µm is demonstrated. All components of the developed capsules are safe for human use and the inverse emulsion approach is known to be compatible with a variety of shell materials and payloads. Hence, the enhanced OA imaging performance can be exploited in multiple biomedical studies and can open a route to clinical approval of agents detectable at a single-particle level.  相似文献

The effect of oxidation, oxy-chlorination and reduction treatments at elevated temperatures on the dispersion of palladium (Pd) and rhodium (Rh) for commercially aged three-way automotive exhaust gas catalysts (TWC) has been investigated. The catalytic activity of treated samples was compared with a reference sample, which was taken from the corresponding aged TWC and tested using a mini-cuts reactor simulating real driving conditions. In the case of oxygen, the improvement of the noble metal dispersion on the catalysts was dependent on the noble metal loading and the degree of metal sintering. Adding chlorine to the oxygen atmosphere facilitates the restructuring of the metals with an improved increase in the noble metal dispersion. The temperature and the composition of the gas used during these thermal treatments proved to be of importance not only to increase the metal dispersion, but also to prevent possible losses of noble metals, in the form of volatile MO x Cl y compounds. TEM-EDS techniques indicated changes in the size of the largest noble metal agglomerates of up to 100 nm in size after thermal gas treatment. BET porosity and XRD analyses were employed to investigate restructuring of the washcoat and showed a decrease in pore size distribution and an increase in surface area.  相似文献

The global carbon cycle is significantly influenced by changes in the use and management of forests and agriculture. Humans have the potential through changes in land use and management to alter the magnitude of forest-carbon stocks and the direction of forest-carbon fluxes. However, controversy over the use of biological means to absorb or reduce emissions of CO(2) (often referred to as carbon 'sinks') has arisen in the context of the Kyoto Protocol. The controversy is based primarily on two arguments: sinks may allow developed nations to delay or avoid actions to reduce fossil fuel emissions, and the technical and operational difficulties are too threatening to the successful implementation of land use and forestry projects for providing carbon offsets. Here we discuss the importance of including carbon sinks in efforts to address global warming and the consequent additional social, environmental and economic benefits to host countries. Activities in tropical forest lands provide the lowest cost methods both of reducing emissions and reducing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases. We conclude that the various objections raised as to the inclusion of carbon sinks to ameliorate climate change can be addressed by existing techniques and technology. Carbon sinks provide a practical available method of achieving meaningful reductions in atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide while at the same time contribute to national sustainable development goals.  相似文献

This review places into context the role that forest ecosystems play in the global carbon cycle, and their potential interactions with climate change. We first examine the natural, preindustrial carbon cycle. Every year forest gross photosynthesis cycles approximately one-twelfth of the atmospheric stock of carbon dioxide, accounting for 50% of terrestrial photosynthesis. This cycling has remained almost constant since the end of the last ice age, but since the Industrial Revolution it has undergone substantial disruption as a result of the injection of 480 PgC into the atmosphere through fossil-fuel combustion and land-use change, including forest clearance. In the second part of this paper we review this 'carbon disruption', and its impact on the oceans, atmosphere and biosphere. Tropical deforestation is resulting in a release of 1.7 PgC yr(-1) into the atmosphere. However, there is also strong evidence for a 'sink' for carbon in natural vegetation (carbon absorption), which can be explained partly by the regrowth of forests on abandoned lands, and partly by a global change factor, the most likely cause being 'fertilization' resulting from the increase in atmospheric CO(2). In the 1990s this biosphere sink was estimated to be sequestering 3.2 PgC yr(-1) and is likely to have substantial effects on the dynamics, structure and biodiversity of all forests. Finally, we examine the potential for forest protection and afforestation to mitigate climate change. An extensive global carbon sequestration programme has the potential to make a particularly significant contribution to controlling the rise in CO2 emissions in the next few decades. In the course of the whole century, however, even the maximum amount of carbon that could be sequestered will be dwarfed by the magnitude of (projected) fossil-fuel emissions. Forest carbon sequestration should only be viewed as a component of a mitigation strategy, not as a substitute for the changes in energy supply, use and technology that will be required if atmospheric CO(2) concentrations are to be stabilized.  相似文献

Objective: The aims of this study were to formulate simvastatin (SV)-loaded self-microemulsifying drug delivery systems (SMEDDS), and explore the potential of these drug delivery systems to improve SV solubility, and also to identify the optimal place in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract for the release of SV using coupled in vitro/in silico approach.

Significance: In comparison to other published results, this study considered the extensive pre-systemic clearance of SV, which could significantly decrease its systemic and hepatic bioavailability if SV is delivered into the small intestine.

Methods: SV-loaded SMEDDS were formulated using various proportions of oils (PEG 300 oleic glycerides, propylene glycol monocaprylate, propylene glycol monolaurate), surfactant (PEG 400 caprylic/capric glycerides) and cosurfactant (polysorbate 80) and subjected to characterization, and physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling.

Results: According to the in vitro results, the selected SMEDDS consisted of 10.0% PEG 300 oleic glycerides, 67.5% PEG 400 caprylic/capric glycerides, and 22.5% polysorbate 80. The use of acid-resistant capsules filled with SV-loaded SMEDDS was found helpful in protecting the drug against early degradation in proximal parts of the GI tract, however, in silico simulations indicated that pH-controlled drug release system that dissolve in the distal parts of the intestine might further improve SV bioavailability (up to 7.20%).

Conclusion: The obtained results suggested that combined strategy for the improvement of SV bioavailability should comprise solubility enhancement and delayed drug release. The developed SV-specific PBPK model could potentially be used to assess the influence of formulation factors on drug absorption and disposition when developing SV oral dosage forms.  相似文献

It is the nature of problems in quality management to contain elements of uncertainty. The uncertainty of input data is the result of a subjective approach to the interpretation of imprecise information. The aim of this article is to present the application of an effective fuzzification instrument in dealing with different kinds of uncertainty and also the application of natural language to model decision making in quality management. The article shows how the integration of fuzzy logic can assist with the planning of a particular product. First, the traditional Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method was used for the purpose of achieving quality improvement in a boiler (house electric water heater). Second, the QFD method combined with fuzzy logic was used for the same purpose. The preferred quality characteristics were defined using both traditional and fuzzy QFD methods, and results obtained were compared and discussed. The implications of the research for practice and future research are outlined.  相似文献
