Removal of hexavalent chromium by xanthated chitosan was investigated in a packed bed up-flow column. The experiments were conducted to study the effect of important design parameters such as bed height and flow rate. At a bed height of 20 cm and flow rate of 5 mL min(-1), the metal-uptake capacity of xanthated chitosan and plain chitosan flakes for hexavalent chromium was found to be 202.5 and 130.12 mg g(-1) respectively. The bed depth service time (BDST) model was used to analyze the experimental data. The computed sorption capacity per unit bed volume (N(0)) was 4.6 ± 0.3 and 78.3 ± 2.9 g L(-1) for plain and xanthated flakes respectively at 10% breakthrough concentration. The rate constant (K(a)) was recorded as 0.0507 and 0.0194 L mg(-1)h(-1) for plain and xanthated chitosan respectively. In flow rate experiments, the results confirmed that the metal uptake capacity and the metal removal efficiency of plain and xanthated chitosan decreased with increasing flow rate. The Thomas model was used to fit the column sorption data at different flow rates and model constants were evaluated. The column was successfully applied for the removal of hexavalent chromium from electroplating wastewater. Five hundred bed volumes of electroplating wastewater were treated in column experiments using this adsorbent, reducing the concentrations of hexavalent chromium from 10 mg L(-1) to 0.1 mg L(-1).  相似文献

Radioactive emissions into the atmosphere from the damaged reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (NPP) started on March 12th, 2011. Among the various radionuclides released, iodine-131 ((131)I) and cesium isotopes ((137)Cs and (134)Cs) were transported across the Pacific toward the North American continent and reached Europe despite dispersion and washout along the route of the contaminated air masses. In Europe, the first signs of the releases were detected 7 days later while the first peak of activity level was observed between March 28th and March 30th. Time variations over a 20-day period and spatial variations across more than 150 sampling locations in Europe made it possible to characterize the contaminated air masses. After the Chernobyl accident, only a few measurements of the gaseous (131)I fraction were conducted compared to the number of measurements for the particulate fraction. Several studies had already pointed out the importance of the gaseous (131)I and the large underestimation of the total (131)I airborne activity level, and subsequent calculations of inhalation dose, if neglected. The measurements made across Europe following the releases from the Fukushima NPP reactors have provided a significant amount of new data on the ratio of the gaseous (131)I fraction to total (131)I, both on a spatial scale and its temporal variation. It can be pointed out that during the Fukushima event, the (134)Cs to (137)Cs ratio proved to be different from that observed after the Chernobyl accident. The data set provided in this paper is the most comprehensive survey of the main relevant airborne radionuclides from the Fukushima reactors, measured across Europe. A rough estimate of the total (131)I inventory that has passed over Europe during this period was <1% of the released amount. According to the measurements, airborne activity levels remain of no concern for public health in Europe.  相似文献

High frequency performance limits of graphene field-effect transistors (FETs) down to a channel length of 20 nm have been examined by using self-consistent quantum simulations. The results indicate that although Klein band-to-band tunneling is significant for sub-100 nm graphene FETs, it is possible to achieve a good transconductance and ballistic on-off ratio larger than 3 even at a channel length of 20 nm. At a channel length of 20 nm, the intrinsic cut-off frequency remains at a few THz for various gate insulator thickness values, but a thin gate insulator is necessary for a good transconductance and smaller degradation of cut-off frequency in the presence of parasitic capacitance. The intrinsic cut-off frequency is close to the LC characteristic frequency set by graphene kinetic inductance (L) and quantum capacitance (C), which is about 100 GHz·μm divided by the gate length.   相似文献

The enantioselective organocatalytic nucleophilic addition of thiols to isatin‐derived ketimines has been developed utilizing only 1 mol% of an enantiopure BINOL‐derived phosphoric acid. The new protocol provides a series of isatin‐derived N,S‐acetals in high yields (up to 98%) and high enantioselectivities (up to 93% ee).

A follow-up study of malnutrition and its determinants among children 6 to 24 months of age was carried out in rural areas of Punjab State in India 30 years after the original study, and following a period of rapid economic growth. The original 1971 study had found a high prevalence of mortality and malnutrition and the worst gender difference in nutritional status ever recorded in an Indian study. The 2001 follow-up study found dramatic reductions in child mortality, child malnutrition, gender-based imbalances in child well-being and care, and family size, the result of participatory economic growth coupled with broad-based educational, health, and family-planning services. Despite overall improvements in caloric intake, however, 40% of lower-class children in 2001 were still consuming less than 50% of their caloric allowance. With minimal gender-based abortion and significantly reduced neglect and mortality offemale children, gender balance among children in this area of rural Punjab improved markedly over the 30-year period.  相似文献

The population which is below the poverty line is devoid of nutritious diet. Egg and milk are categorized as complete foods. The defensive organizations are situated in such remote places where fresh food material is not available. Keeping in view these problems, the study of organoleptic variables, viz., color, appearance, aroma, texture and taste in the food products of cake, omelet doughnut, coconut macaroon and mayonnaise from fresh egg and egg powder, was conducted. Principal component analysis was carried out. Organoleptic properties of doughnut prepared from egg powder were superior compared to fresh egg which had better sensory traits for coconut macaroon. The sensory traits like taste, texture and aroma were the most influential traits studied to pronouncing as a panel decision. It is proposed that fresh egg and egg powder should be preferred in the process of preparation of coconut macaroon and doughnut, respectively.  相似文献

Preirradiated isotactic polypropylene (IPP) powder has been modified by grafting 2-vinyl pyridine (2-VP) and styrene (Sty) in an aqueous medium. The graft copolymerization reaction was studied under different experimental conditions such as total dose, monomer concentration, amount of the solvent, time of reaction and temperature to determine the optimum conditions for affording maximum percentage of grafting (Pg). Maximum grafting percent of 2-VP (180%) and styrene (117%) was obtained under optimum conditions. The rate of grafting (Rg) of 2-VP and styrene has also been determined as a function of total dose, initial monomer concentration and the reaction temperature. From maximum Pg and different Rg values of 2-VP and Sty, 2-VP is more reactive towards grafting as compared to styrene under optimum conditions. Characterization of the graft copolymers is based on differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis. Isolation of the grafted poly(2-VP) and poly(styrene) chains from the grafted samples provides an additional evidence of formation of the graft copolymer.  相似文献

The diffusion coefficient and solubility of water molecules were measured in polyglycolide (PGA), poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA), poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate] (PHB), poly(ϵ‐caprolactone) (PCL), and SkygreenR (SG). The diffusion coefficient and equilibrium solubility decreased in the order SG > PCL > PLLA > PHB > PGA and PGA > SG > PLLA > PHB > PCL, respectively. The diffusion coefficient and solubility of water at low sorption temperature in PHB varied according to the initial crystallinity of the matrix polymer even though crystallization of PHB molecules took place during the sorption experiment. In contrast, the amorphous PLLA and the crystalline PLLA showed an almost identical diffusion coefficient and solubility of water, in spite of the fact that the amorphous PLLA remained practically amorphous during the whole sorption procedure. A strong correlation existed between the water solubility and the surface tension or contact angle of the polymer matrix. The water diffusivity in PGA was almost 2 orders of magnitude lower while water was more soluble in PGA with a lower heat of sorption than that corresponding to the other more hydrophobic polymers, indicating that the transport of water molecules in PGA followed the solution–diffusion model. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
