Collagen and collagen-based scaffolds offer distinct advantages when selected as biomaterials for use across a broad spectrum
of regenerative medicine applications. However, relatively poor mechanical properties are often perceived to limit their usefulness
for orthopedic applications. These problems can be overcome through enhanced crosslinking mechanisms or through the addition
of a second, stiffer phase such as hydroxyapatite, thus allowing tailored composite scaffolds to meet specific tissue requirements.
This overview will highlight the current state of the art of these scaffolds, and consider the exciting prospects and future

This paper details a case study application of model predictive control for a wastewater treatment process in Lancaster, North England. The control system was implemented in real time, together with a plant monitoring system for the purposes of process supervision. Following implementation, the model predictive control system provided significant benefits compared with the previously applied control system. These benefits included a reduction of over 25% in power usage and a similar increase in plant efficiency. A direct comparison was made between the air kerma primary standards used for the measurements of low-energy x rays at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The comparison was conducted at the NPL using NPL reference radiation qualities between 10 kV and 80 kV. Eye tracking has been used successfully as a technique for measuring cognitive load in reading, psycholinguistics, writing,
language acquisition etc. for some time now. Its application as a technique for measuring the reading ease of MT output has
not yet, to our knowledge, been tested. We report here on a preliminary study testing the use and validity of an eye tracking
methodology as a means of semi-automatically evaluating machine translation output. 50 French machine translated sentences,
25 rated as excellent and 25 rated as poor in an earlier human evaluation, were selected. Ten native speakers of French were
instructed to read the MT sentences for comprehensibility. Their eye gaze data were recorded non-invasively using a Tobii
1750 eye tracker. The average gaze time and fixation count were found to be higher for the “bad” sentences, while average
fixation duration and pupil dilations were not found to be substantially different for output rated as good and output rated
as bad. Comparisons between HTER scores and eye gaze data were also found to correlate well with gaze time and fixation count,
but not with pupil dilation and fixation duration. We conclude that the eye tracking data, in particular gaze time and fixation
count, correlate reasonably well with human evaluation of MT output but fixation duration and pupil dilation may be less reliable
indicators of reading difficulty for MT output. We also conclude that eye tracking has promise as a semi-automatic MT evaluation
technique, which does not require bi-lingual knowledge, and which can potentially tap into the end users’ experience of machine

A dense, micron-tall layer of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was grown above a layer of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during the same synthesis using a thick cobalt catalyst (15 nm). The CNFs had large diameters (100 nm) and were amorphous while the CNTs had small diameter (10–20 nm) and were crystalline. Base growth mechanism was at play for both the nanofibers and the nanotubes. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterization suggested that the main mechanisms leading to the growth of the two structures were based on the dewetting of the catalyst layer and its subsequent alloying with the Ta underlayer. We can extend these principles to grow diverse carbon nanostructures during the same synthesis using appropriate multilayer thin films for different applications, especially for electrochemical cells and supercapacitors. 相似文献
