An investigation into the possible occurrence of peptide-bound lanthionine in locust muscle

The amino acid composition of the protein of the wing muscle of the African migratory locust (Locusta migratoria migratorioides) was examined by qualitative and quantitative methods. the possible presence of lanthionine was investigated. Lanthionine could not be detected by two-dimensional paper chromatography nor by ion-exchange chromatography operated under three different conditions of temperature and pH. the analysis of hydrolysates prepared after a preliminary oxidation revealed no changes in composition that would arise had lanthionine been present together with other acids.     

Transient containment response and inherent retention capability

For safety assessments of early sodium cooled fast breeder reactors, hypothetical events such as loss of flow or transient overpower sequences combined with the failure of the reactor protective systems have been evaluated. The intent of these evaluations was to demonstrate that even extremely unlikely combinations of failures which could lead to meltdown of a portion of the reactor core would not propagate into events harmful to the public.This paper investigates the consequences of a meltdown event. In general, reactor vessels and the primary sodium systems have an adequate inherent retention capability to retain dispersed or molten core debris and remove decay heat. For certain vessel designs, large core debris masses may penetrate through the vessel wall and drain into the reactor cell. Although significant uncertainties exist in the evaluations of debris retention and heat removal capabilities of the containment, there is indication that criteria for radiological limits can well be met. If the accident progression can be controlled in-vessel, consequences would be minimized.     

Effects of suggestion on d' and Cx for pain detection and pain tolerance.

Results of a study with 20 male and 20 female college students demonstrated that suggestion directed toward eliciting fewer reports of detection of minimal pain and suggestion directed toward greater pain tolerance (fewer withdrawals) altered the response probabilities in the expected direction and in addition raised both the pain detection and pain tolerance thresholds to thermal stimulation. However, sensory decision theory analysis of the same response data revealed that the sole effect of the suggestions was to raise the detection criterion for very faint pain and the withdrawal criterion for pain tolerance. Suggestion was absolutely without effect on the S's ability to discriminate noxious stimulation (d'), indicating that suggestion had failed to produce an analgesic effect. Males set a higher criterion than females, but d' did not differ. It is concluded that many of the pain threshold changes produced by "cognitive control," hypnosis, counter-irritant stimulation, etc, are not due to decreased pain sensitivity but merely reflect changes in the criterion for reporting pain. Counselor reactions to female clients: Generalizing from analogue research to a counseling setting.

Proposed and applied a research procedure for extending the external validity of analog research. An analog investigation of counselor reactions to female clients conducted by C. Hill et al (1977) was partially replicated using parallel measures obtained in a naturalistic counseling setting. 32 female university counseling center clients in 2 age groups (above or below 25 yrs) served as Ss. The effects of counselor sex and client age on the counselor's perceived importance of client problems and estimates of the number of client contacts needed for problem resolution were investigated. Results show that, in general, counselors from both settings tended to evaluate problem importance similarly. Other similarities and dissimilarities between the 2 studies are discussed. Internal-external locus of control and perception of disability.

Collected ratings of the seriousness of various disabilities from 211 male and 268 female undergraduates. Ss rated the disabilities as they would affect "self" and "other" in their feelings about themselves and in their social relationships. As predicted, externally controlled Ss (as measured by the Rotter Internal-External Control Scale) rated physical disabilities as more debilitating than did the internally controlled. In contrast to externals, internals rated emotional disorders as being more debilitating relative to physical disabilities. Data are interpreted as adding to the construct validity of internal-external locus of control. Implications pertaining to reaction to disability are discussed.
