Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest: 1986.

The awards for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology in the Public Interest recognize persons who, in the opinion of the Committee on Public Interest Awards, have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. These contributions might include the identification or solution of significant social problems; unusual initiative or dedication to activity in the public interest; or the integration of the science and/or profession of psychology with social action in a manner beneficial to all. The Committee is authorized to present two awards per year, each with a prize of $2,000. The second award, for which recipients may not have held a Ph.D. for more than 15 years, was established to recognize the large number of excellent psychologists who have made significant contributions to the public interest during the early stages of their careers. Irving B. Harris: A Legacy of Vision and Generosity.

David W. Johnson: Award for Distinguished Contributions of Applications of Psychology to Education and Training.

Provides the biography of David W. Johnson and announces that he has won the Award for Distinguished Contributions of Applications of Psychology to Education and Training for programmatic research, comprehensive research reviews, and revision of theory over four decades of persistence that have provided the knowledge foundation for cooperative learning, constructive controversy, conflict resolution, and peer mediation training. High density polyethylene-wood flour composite lumber: efficacy of two proprietary biocides in the control of fungal colonization and discoloration

Two proprietary biocides were compounded and extruded at three concentrations, respectively, into high density polyethylene-maple wood flour lumber (HDPE-MWL) and evaluated for their efficacy to control fungal colonization and discoloration using the ASTM Standard G 21-96. Although the silver biocide used in this study did not control fungal colonization and discoloration of HDPE-MWL, statistically significant difference was observed between the highest silver biocide concentration and those of the two lower silver biocide concentrations. The latter exhibited no significant difference with the controls. In contrast, the three levels of zinc biocides showed significant difference from each other with respect to their efficacy against fungal colonization and discoloration of HDPE-MWL. Overall, only the zinc biocide was efficacious against fungal colonization and discoloration. The biocide containing zinc as an active biocidal agent was most efficacious at 1% (by weight) concentration.

2003 Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Science of Psychology.

Presents the 2003 American Psychological Foundation's Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Science of Psychology, which was presented to Robert Rosenthal. A biography of Rosenthal is provided, along with a selected bibliography and the text of the award citation: "For outstanding scientific contributions that have had a profound influence on research methods, empirical investigations, theory, and applications. Robert Rosenthal's seminal research on interpersonal expectancy inspired hundreds of studies with applications within and beyond psychology. His amplification of experimenter- and subject-related artifacts and his insights about ethical issues have improved the way that research is conducted.
