Particular immunopathological features and their effects on the vascular permeability of different ocular structures were analysed in two dogs naturally infected by Leishmania infantum. The existence of specific anti-Leishmania immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the aqueous humour was confirmed by the ELISA technique. There was no correlation between antibody levels in the aqueous humour and the related serum. The histopathological study of the eyes showed the existence of lesions in various ocular structures. The ciliary processes, ciliary body, sclerocorneal limbus, iris and lacrimal duct showed intense inflammatory zones with lymphocyte infiltrates, plasmatic cells and macrophages with amastigote forms of Leishmania. In addition vasculitis with dilation and thrombi were also detected in both cases, with consequent oedema and hyalinization. The immunohistochemistry analysis revealed the presence of granular and diffuse IgG deposits in the ciliary body, ciliary processes, sclerocorneal limbus and iris. Furthermore, numerous thrombosed vessels were observed in the sclerocorneal zone and iris. Complement 3 (C3) fraction deposits were not present in the ocular structures. The present data suggest that the ocular lesions may have an immunopathological origin.  相似文献

A short review of the prevalence of ischaemic heart disease in South African Whites is given, and primary prevention, which entails an alteration in life style, is emphasised. The role of increased physical activity in primary prevention is discussed. Any programme to increase the fitness status of a population based on activities that must be performed outside the daily routine, willhave limited impact. The possible role of cycling is discussed and it is shown that ordinary cycling to work probably causes sufficient stimulation of the cardiovascular system to produce an acceptable standard of physical fitness.  相似文献

Antibody prepared against troponin-C, the calcium binding component of the troponin complex, was reacted with I band segments, and the distribution of antibody binding was assessed by immuno-electron microscopy. The I segments were isolated from glycerinated pectoral muscle which was prepared from normal adult chickens and from dystrophic chickens of strain 308. The antibody was deposited at 384 A +/- 7 A intervals along the thin filaments of the normal muscle. In contrast to the normal controls the dystrophic muscle did not exhibit a distinct periodicity when reacted with anti-troponin-C. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate revealed that although protein bands corresponding to troponin-C could be observed in the gels of the dystrophic preparations, the troponin-C band had migrated slower than that from normal thin filaments. It is concluded that avian muscular dystrophy produces an alteration of the structure of troponin-C resulting in (1) an inability of the protein to combine with its specific antibody and (2) a change in its electrophoretic behavior.  相似文献

We have investigated whether increased tumor uptake of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) detected with positron emission tomography (PET) early after initiating tamoxifen therapy ("metabolic flare") predicts a hormonally responsive breast cancer. Eleven postmenopausal women with biopsy-proved estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) metastatic breast cancer were studied by PET with FDG and 16alpha[18F]fluoro-17beta-estradiol (FES) before and 7-10 days after initiation of tamoxifen therapy. FDG and FES uptake was evaluated semiquantitatively in 21 lesions. The PET results were correlated with follow-up evaluation, continued until the patient became unresponsive to hormone therapy (3-24 months). There were seven responders and four nonresponders based on clinical follow-up. None of the responders had a clinical flare reaction, but all demonstrated metabolic flare, with a mean +/- standard deviation increase in tumor standardized uptake value (SUV) for FDG of 1.4+/-0. 7. No evidence for flare was noted in the nonresponders (change in SUV for FDG -0.1+/-0.4; P = 0.008 vs. responders). The degree of ER blockade by tamoxifen was greater in responders (mean decrease in SUV 2.7+/-1.7) than in nonresponders (mean decrease 0.8+/-0.5) (P = 0.04).
