In another paper in this volume, it is demonstrated that the electrochemical interface in MEAs, and thus the polarization performance of the resulting fuel cells, can be improved by optimising the hot‐pressing procedure in the MEA preparation. In particular, the extent of drying of the membrane during MEA preparation was shown to be critical. In the present investigation, the effect of the drying process, and thus water content, on the hydrophilicity, wetting, and surface energies of some fuel cell membranes is examined. Wetting and surface energies are well known to influence the bonding behaviour of materials. Conclusions about how membrane drying and changes in water content influence membrane bonding and the relative importance of these surface effects are drawn.  相似文献

The use of reformed fuels in polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) exhibits distinctive advantages over pure hydrogen in terms of fuel supply infrastructure and on‐board fuel storage in a vehicle. Yet small residual CO in the reformate in the order of 10–100 ppm cause severe degradation of fuel cell performance. The CO tolerance of the fuel cell is therefore an important characteristic calling for adequate quantitative evaluation. In this study, we assessed a range of methods to quantify the CO tolerance based on cell polarization data. Generally, no method has the claim to be ideal, but the appropriate choice of CO tolerance quantity rather depends on the design target of the fuel cell system. Analysis of literature data revealed, however, that comparison of fuel cell performance using pure and CO‐contaminated hydrogen, respectively, at constant current density seems to be a popular method, because it yields immediate evidence of anode performance. It was also recognized that CO tolerance manifests on different levels: on the electrocatalyst, the electrode, and the fuel cell level. In order to investigate the CO tolerance on the electrode level, a fuel cell of one‐dimensional construction, like the one used in our experiments, needs to be employed.  相似文献

Comparable quantitative data of Campylobacter spp. on chicken products are a major data lack for quantitative risk assessment approaches. The objective of this study was to compare two different sampling techniques for the isolation and enumeration of Campylobacter spp. in chicken and to evaluate a suitable enumeration method comparing the most probable number (MPN) technique to the direct plating method. For this, 90 packages containing at least two raw chicken legs were examined for the comparison of sampling techniques, rinsing one leg and homogenizing 25 g of skin of the other leg of each package; both sample preparation types were examined by direct plating method and MPN technique in 40 out of 90 packages. Of the skin samples, 70% (63/90), and of the rinse samples, 77% (69/90), were Campylobacter-positive. Enumeration of Campylobacter spp. by direct plating revealed a median of log 4 cfu/leg surface in skin samples (S.D.=0.6) and a median of log 4.3 cfu/leg surface in rinse samples (S.D.=0.9) of the rinse samples; 73% (37/51) had higher numbers of Campylobacter spp. than the skin samples although the difference was not significant (p=0.08). The correlation coefficient of Campylobacter counts in skin and rinse samples was 0.43. The prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in rinse samples was 58% (23/40). In 5% (2/40) of the rinse samples, numbers of Campylobacter spp. could be detected only by the MPN technique due to the lower detection limit compared to the direct plating method. The MPN technique turned out to be unsuitable for the enumeration of Campylobacter spp. in skin samples because a layer formation on the top of the incubated MPN-tubes leads to irregular MPN results. Out of 80% (16/20) of the compared rinse samples, the direct plating detected higher numbers of Campylobacter spp., with a median count of log 4.2 cfu/leg surface (S.D.=1) compared the MPN technique where a median of log 4 cfu/leg surface (S.D.=1.1) was obtained. The difference was not significant (p=0.05). A highly positive correlation coefficient of 0.9 was observed between the direct plating and the MPN technique. Both sampling methods, rinsing the chicken leg and homogenizing the skin, are suitable for the detection and quantification of Campylobacter spp.; the direct plating method was superior to the MPN technique for enumerating Campylobacter spp. in raw chicken legs at retail level because enumeration is more rapid and less laborious.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and numbers of Campylobacter on the skin and in the muscle of chicken legs at retail to examine the external and internal contamination for an exposure assessment. Furthermore, the study assessed seasonal influence on Campylobacter contamination in chicken legs. Of the 140 examined skin samples, 66% were positive, and the internal contamination of 115 sampled chicken legs was 27%. The enumeration of Campylobacter on the surface of positive chicken legs revealed a median of 2.4 log CFU/g of skin, and the quantification of Campylobacter in the muscle gave results mainly under the detection limit of the most-probable-number method (<0.3 MPN Campylobacter per g). The external contamination was significantly higher than the internal. In both skin and muscle samples, Campylobacter jejuni had a much higher incidence than Campylobacter coli. However, with regard to the specification of Campylobacter on the surface of chicken legs, C. coli was isolated at higher colony counts than C. jejuni. During the 1-year study, two peaks of Campylobacter contamination occurred, one in the early springtime (February and March, 100 and 90%, respectively) and the second during the warmer months in the summer (July and August, both 90%). Furthermore, a positive correlation between prevalence and numbers of Campylobacter on chicken legs was observed.  相似文献

Terahertz all-optical modulation in a silicon-polymer hybrid system   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Although gigahertz-scale free-carrier modulators have been demonstrated in silicon, intensity modulators operating at terahertz speeds have not been reported because of silicon's weak ultrafast nonlinearity. We have demonstrated intensity modulation of light with light in a silicon-polymer waveguide device, based on the all-optical Kerr effect-the ultrafast effect used in four-wave mixing. Direct measurements of time-domain intensity modulation are made at speeds of 10 GHz. We showed experimentally that the mechanism of this modulation is ultrafast through spectral measurements, and that intensity modulation at frequencies in excess of 1 THz can be obtained. By integrating optical polymers through evanescent coupling to silicon waveguides, we greatly increase the effective nonlinearity of the waveguide, allowing operation at continuous-wave power levels compatible with telecommunication systems. These devices are a first step in the development of large-scale integrated ultrafast optical logic in silicon, and are two orders of magnitude faster than previously reported silicon devices.  相似文献

This paper investigates whether diagenetic alterations in sandstones and resulting changes in reservoir quality are influenced by depositional environments and sequence stratigraphy. The study focusses on the Cretaceous U and T sandstone members of the Napo Formation in the Oriente Basin of Ecuador. The sandstones were deposited in fluvial, transitional and marine environments, and comprise Lowstand (LST), Transgressive (TST) and Highstand Systems Tract (HST) deposits. The data were obtained by detailed petrographic observations supported by microprobe, stable isotope, and fluid inclusion analyses. The sandstones consist of fine- to medium-grained quartzarenites and subarkoses. Diagenetic events include cementation by chlorite, early and late kaolinite/dickite, early and late carbonates (siderite, Fe-dolomite/ankerite), and quartz. Early (eogenetic) processes included formation of chlorite grain coatings, kaolinite pore filling, and siderite (SI) cementation. Chlorite is absent in TST sandstones but was found frequently in LST-HST sandstones. Early kaolinite is not present in LST sandstones but occurred frequently in LST-HST sandstones. The distribution of mesogenetic cements relative to sequence stratigraphy is different in the U and T units. In the U sandstones, calcite is frequent in LST deposits and absent in the LST-HST. Fe-dolomite/ankerite is abundant only in the TST. S2 siderite is present in the TST and LST, but absent in the LST-HST. Quartz cement and kaolinite/dickite are equally distributed in all systems tracts. In the T sandstones Fe-dolomite/ankerite is only abundant in the TST, whilst calcite, quartz and dickite have similar distributions in all the systems tracts. The distribution of kaolinite cement is interpreted to be the result of relatively more intense meteoric-water flux occurring during sea-level fall, whereas chlorite cement may have formed through burial diagenetic transformation of precursor clays e.g. berthierine which was precipitated in mixed marine-meteoric waters in tidal channel and estuarine environments. Chlorite cement in the T and U sandstones appears to have retarded development of quartz overgrowths, and 12–13% primary porosity is retained. The T sandstones (LST-HST) contain up to 4% chlorite cement. Little evidence for chemical compaction was found with the exception of occasional concave-convex grain contacts. Eogenetic siderite appears to have helped to preserve reservoir quality through supporting the sandstone framework against further compaction, but mesogenetic calcite has considerably reduced primary porosity. Eogenetic siderite (SI) was partly replaced by later carbonate cements such as late siderite (S2) and Fe-dolomite. Although there appears to be a relationship in the Napo Formation between the occurrence of siderite SI and sequence stratigraphy, the relationship may change when original volumes of siderite are considered. There is likewise partial replacement of early kaolinite and recrystalization to dickite which masks the amount of original early kaolinite. Since the amount of early kaolinite could not be confirmed, the relationship to sequence stratigraphy is tentative. Only chlorite seems to have a clear relationship to sequence stratigraphic framework in the Napo Formation. The high intergranular volume (IGV) of the sandstones indicates that cementation played a more important role than mechanical and chemical compaction in both Napo Formation sandstone members. Later dissolution of feldspar grains and siderite cements was the main process of secondary porosity development (up to 11% in the U sandstones).  相似文献

Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is a mature and very established technique, frequently used in many fields of applications ranging from natural product analysis to chemical or pharmaceutical applications. The introduction of a commercially available TLC-MS interface was a major step complementing the ease of use of TLC with structural elucidation power of mass spectrometry (MS). The TLC-MS interface simplifies the workflow dramatically to gain structural information directly from TLC separations. This article describes the potential of TLC-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) utilizing the TLC-MS interface to straightforwardly characterize zones of interest by NMR spectroscopy with a focus on quantification of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) in formulations and identification of active principles in plant extracts.  相似文献
