This report provides an overview of physical ergonomic exposures in highway construction work across trades and major operations. For each operation, the observational method “PATH” (Posture, Activity, Tools and Handling) was used to estimate the percentage of time that workers spent in specific tasks and with exposure to awkward postures and load handling. The observations were carried out on 73 different days, typically for about 4 h per day, covering 120 construction workers in 5 different trades: laborers, carpenters, ironworkers, plasterers, and tilers. Non-neutral trunk postures (forward or sideways flexion or twisting) were frequently observed, representing over 40% of observations for all trades except laborers (28%). Kneeling and squatting were common in all operations, especially tiling and underground utility relocation work. Handling loads was frequent, especially for plasterers and tilers, with a range of load weights but most often under 15 pounds. The results of this study provide quantitative evidence that workers in highway tunnel construction operations are exposed to ergonomic factors known to present significant health hazards. Numerous opportunities exist for the development and implementation of ergonomic interventions to protect the health and safety of construction workers. 相似文献

A typical desktop LCD projector was characterised. Having determined the optimum settings of the brightness and contrast controls, measurements were made with a spectroradiometer to establish the additivity of the primaries, inter-channel dependence, colour gamut, tone scale, contrast, spatial non-uniformity, temporal stability and viewing angle variation. Four mathematical models were compared for their accuracy in predicting the colours generated by the display for arbitrary signal inputs. A new model was developed for the S-shaped electro-optical transfer function of the LCD device, and was extended to predict the anomalous colour tracking of the primaries. 相似文献

Two piezoresistive (n-polysilicon) strain sensors on a thin Si3N4/SiO2 membrane with improved sensitivity were successfully fabricated by using MEMS technology. The primary difference between the two designs was the number of strips of the polysilicon patterns. For each design, a doped n-polysilicon sensing element was patterned over a thin 3 μm Si3N4/SiO2 membrane. A 1000×1000 μm2 window in the silicon wafer was etched to free the thin membrane from the silicon wafer. The intent of this design was to fabricate a flexible MEMS strain sensor similar in function to a commercial metal foil strain gage. A finite element model of this geometry indicates that strains in the membrane will be higher than strains in the surrounding silicon. The values of nominal resistance of the single strip sensor and the multi-strip sensor were 4.6 and 8.6 kΩ, respectively. To evaluate thermal stability and sensing characteristics, the temperature coefficient of resistance [TCR=(ΔR/R0)/ΔT] and the gage factor [GF=(ΔR/R0)/] for each design were evaluated. The sensors were heated on a hot plate to measure the TCR. The sensors were embedded in a vinyl ester epoxy plate to determine the sensor sensitivity. The TCR was 7.5×10−4 and 9.5×10−4/°C for the single strip and the multi-strip pattern sensors. The gage factor was as high as 15 (bending) and 13 (tension) for the single strip sensor, and 4 (bending) and 21 (tension) for the multi-strip sensor. A real-time database systemhas temporal consistency constraints in addition to timing constraints.The timing constraints require a transaction to be completedby a specified deadline, and the temporal consistency constraintsrequire that temporal data read by a transaction be up-to-date.If a transaction reads out-of-date data, it will become temporallyinconsistent. A real-time database system consists of differenttypes of temporal data objects, including derived objects. Thevalue of a derived object is computed from a set of other objects,known as the read-set of the derived object. The derived objectmay not always reflect the current state of its read-set; a derivedobject can become out-of-date even if its read-set is up-to-date.Any subsequent transaction reading the derived object will thenbecome temporally inconsistent. In this case, in order to readup-to-date objects, a transaction will have to wait until someother transaction updates the out-of-date object. However, indoing so, the waiting transaction may miss its deadline, particularlyif the update is not periodic but instead arrives randomly. Wepropose to update the outdated objects so that not only is thetemporal consistency improved, but also the number of misseddeadlines does not increase significantly, and as a result thereis an overall improvement in the performance of the system. Wepropose, implement and study a novel approach, to be known astriggered updates, to improve temporal consistency in firm real-timedatabase systems when updates are not periodic. We identify propertiesof triggered updates and explain how they work by giving bothan intuitive and a probabilistic analysis. We present strategiesfor generating triggered updates, discuss their suitability invarious contexts and perform a detailed simulation study to evaluatetheir performance. The ATP-binding cassette protein ABCG2 is a member of a broad family of ABC transporters with potential clinical importance as a mediator of multidrug resistance. We carried out a homology and knowledge-based, and mutationally improved molecular modeling study to establish a much needed structural framework for the protein, which could serve as guidance for further genetic, biochemical, and structural analyses. Based on homology with known structures of both full-length and nucleotide-binding domains (NBD) of ABC transporters and structural knowledge of integral membrane proteins, an initial model of ABCG2 was established. Subsequent refinement to conform to the lipophilic index distributions in the transmembrane domain (TMD) and to the results of site-directed mutagenesis experiments led to an improved model. The complete ABCG2 model consists of two identical subunits facing each other in a closed conformation. The dimeric interface in the nucleotide-binding domain (NBD) involves a characteristic nucleotide sandwich and the interface in the TMD consists of the TM helices 1–3 of one subunit and the helices 5 and 6 of the other. The interface between the NBD and the TMD is bridged by the conserved structural motif between TM2 and TM3, the intracellular domain 1 (ICD1), and the terminal β-strand (S6) of the central β-sheet in the NBD. The apparent flexibility of the ICD1 may play a role in transmitting conformational changes from the NBD to the TMD or from the TMD to the NBD. 相似文献

There is increasing interest in distinguishing the effects of physical and psychosocial workplace stressors on the aetiology of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). Modest associations have been found between psychosocial stressors and MSD, such as intensive load, monotonous work and low job control. Interpretation of these results has been limited by likely covariation between physical and psychosocial stressors. This investigation examined exposure covariation among blue- and white-collar workers employed in a mass production manufacturing environment (N = 410). Physical stressors were assessed from questionnaire and accelerometry. Psychosocial stressors were assessed from questionnaire. Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were computed. An exploratory factor analysis procedure identified possible common factors linking specific physical and psychosocial stressors. Moderate to high correlations between some physical and psychosocial stressors showed evidence of covariation both across and within groups. Covariation was strongest among blue-collar production and low-status office workers. Factor analysis results showed considerable shared variance between some physical and psychosocial stressors, such as repetition and job control, suggesting that these disparate stressors manifest from common work organization factors that govern the structure of work. While recognizing the conceptual differences between physical and psychosocial stressors, these results call attention to the strong empirical relationships that can exist between some stressors in the workplace setting. To guard against ambiguous study findings that can occur when exposures are mixed, it is critical that future epidemiologic studies include information about the degree of association between task-level stressors. Future research on work organization determinants of task-level stressors, and their coincident occurrence in jobs with greater specialization, may provide promising new insights into the nature of risk for MSD and effective prevention strategies. 相似文献

Along 25 km of the Lake Ontario shoreline near Toronto, Ontario, small coastal embayments (0.4–32 ha) have been constructed or modified by lake-infilling to restore warmwater fish habitat. The variation in thermal habitat quality for warmwater fishes among these embayments is very high; temperatures range from those found within a small pond to those of much cooler Lake Ontario. Since meteorological conditions and surface heat fluxes are almost identical, the temperature variation among embayments must be caused by differences in bathymetry or exchange with Lake Ontario. However, a previous study on these embayments found paradoxically that temperatures were not strongly associated with channel size or embayment bathymetry. This paper resolves the paradox by showing that flushing times for almost all of the constructed embayments were less than 1 day, and often less than 12 h. With so little time to warm within the embayments, water temperatures of almost all embayments remained very close to the temperatures of the adjacent lake waters. The coldest embayments connected directly to open Lake Ontario and warmer embayments connected to Lake Ontario through other embayments or protected harbors, where the inflowing water from Lake Ontario had already substantially warmed. To allow embayments along the exposed shoreline of Toronto to reach acceptable temperatures for warmwater fish, we use heat budgets to calculate that average summer flushing times must be increased from their current length of 1.5 to 5.5 h to approximately 30 h. Two techniques are described for the enhancement of the kinetics of reduction of iron oxide from slags by carbon in molten
iron. Laboratory experiments have shown that the rate of iron oxide reduction by carbon-saturated iron can be increased by
5 to 10 times when the reaction is carried out under a reduced-pressure atmosphere. This effect is thought to be the result
of the increased volumetric gas evolution through the slag layer and the associated increase in slag stirring. A model is
presented, which relates the mass-transfer coefficient for ferrous ions in the slag to its stirring that is controlled by
varying the ambient pressure. Additional laboratory experiments examined the electrochemical nature of iron oxide reduction
from slag by carbon in liquid iron. Results indicate that the reduction of iron oxide from slag is increased in the presence
of an applied electric field. The external circuit allows for the separation of the half-cell reactions associated with iron
oxide reduction and decarburization and increases the reaction area available for the individual reactions. These results
have significant implications for several important slag metal reactions, which occur during ironmaking and steelmaking operations. 相似文献
