This study investigated the probiotic characteristics of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from 14 Malaysian fermented food or milk products. In total, 22.3% (121 of 542) of the LAB isolated from the local fermented products exhibited antibacterial activity against Micrococcus luteus. Twelve LAB that demonstrated better antibacterial activity against M. luteus as compared to a commercial strain Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LABPC) were selected for further characterisation. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence, the LAB were identified as pediococci (seven) and lactobacilli (five). All 12 LAB showed bile tolerance, but only eight were acid tolerant at pH ≥ 3.0. The highest level of adhesion to HT‐29 cells was observed among the Lactobacillus sp. LAB 1 and 10. The LAB also showed antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus through the production of organic acids. LAB isolated from Malaysian fermented food and milk products, especially fermented tapioca, contains potential probiotic candidates.  相似文献

Temperature distribution, velocity and pressure profiles during high pressure compression (500 MPa) of liquid food (water) and solid–liquid food mixture (beef fat and water), within a three dimensional cylinder basket is simulated. The computations domain in both cases was performed for a cylinder with a diameter of 38 mm and height of 290 mm, which are the same dimensions of the high pressure unit “FOOD-LAB model S-FL-850-9-W” available at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The governing equations for continuity, momentum and energy conservation are solved using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package (PHOENICS), version 3.5, which is based on a finite volume method of solution. The simulation for liquid food only shows the effect of forced and free convection flow on the temperature distribution in the liquid at the early stages of compression. This is due to the difference between the velocity of the pumping fluid as it enters the cylinder inlet hole (10−2–10−3) m s−1 and the velocity in the treatment chamber (10−8–10−9) m s−1. The simulation for the solid–liquid mixture shows as well, the temperature distribution in the solid and liquid at different stages of compression. It shows that the solid pieces are more heated than the liquid, which is due to the difference in their compression heating coefficient. Validation of the computed temperature in both cases is found to be in an agreement with those measured experimentally and reported in the literature.  相似文献

The focus in Uzbekistan on cotton and its irrigation led to large increases in water use with significant downstream impacts, particularly on the Aral Sea. While agriculture is still heavily influenced by the state, Uzbekistan has become more integrated in the global economy since its independence. The major goal of this paper is to examine the interrelationship between agricultural policies and water use during the last 15 years and how moves towards freer markets, such as those which might occur under the World Trade Organization, may impact Uzbekistan's water resources in the future. The results show that partial or full market liberalization may result in an increase in water use. However, the greater message is that non-water policies can have a major impact on water outcomes and therefore should be considered in any discussions of water sector reform.  相似文献

A study on development of Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometric method combined with principle component analysis as well as real-time polymerase chain reaction for determination of pork–beef mixture in meatballs has been performed. A lipid component extracted from pork and beef in meatballs is analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, while DNA extracted from meatball was analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The correlation between actual and predicted concentration of lard using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was performed by aid of partial least squares, while grouping of lard and beef fat components in meatball was carried out by Fourier-transform infrared spectra coupled with principle component analysis. The results showed that Fourier-transform infrared spectra at wavenumbers of 1000–1200 cm?1 coupled with partial least square and principle component analysis are successfully used for quantification and classification of pork in beef meatballs. The relationship between actual value and predicted value of lard (lipid fraction obtained from meatballs containing pork) with Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometric method revealed good correlation, with coefficient determination (R2) value of 0.997 and standard error of calibration of 0.04%. Principle component analysis is able to classify samples containing pork and beef meatballs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy using normal spectra is fast technique for identification and quantification of lard extracted from pork in meatball. In addition, real-time polymerase chain reaction using Leptin Primer–AJ 865080 can be used for amplification of pork DNA specifically in meatballs containing pork.  相似文献

A parametric study of pyrolysis and steam gasification of rice straw (RS) was performed to investigate the effect of the presence of K2CO3 on the behavior of gas evolution, gas component distribution, pyrolysis/gasification reactivity, the quality and volume of synthetic gas. During pyrolysis, with the increase in K2CO3 content in RS (i) the instantaneous CO2 concentration was increased while CO concentration was relatively stable; (ii) the yield of CO2 and H2 increased on the cost of CH4. During steam gasification of RS, with the increase in K2CO3 content in RS (i) the instantaneous concentration of CO2 and H2 increased while instantaneous concentration of CO and CH4 decreased; (ii) the yield of CO2 and H2 production and total yield increased; and (iii) yield of CO and CH4 production followed the order: 9% K2CO3 RS<6% K2CO3 RS<raw RS<3% K2CO3 RS<water-leached RS. Water-leached RS showed the highest pyrolysis reactivity, while stream gasification reactivity was proportional to K2CO3 content in RS. The results of this study reveal that the presence of K2CO3 during pyrolysis and steam gasification of RS effectively improves production of H2 rich gas.  相似文献

In this paper, an analytical steady state model is developed to study the thermal performance of an individual vacuum tube solar collector with coaxial piping (direct flow type) incorporating both single and two-phase flows. A system of equations which describe the different heat transfer mechanisms and flow conditions was established, discretised, and solved in an iterative manner. For the case of good vacuum condition (10?5 mb) the calculated efficiency curve for single phase flow deviates significantly from the experiments with increasing collector temperature, but agrees well for the case of gas conduction inside the glass envelope at very low pressure (?1 mb) due to the corresponding increase in overall heat loss coefficient (U-value).For two-phase flow, the occurrence and propagation of flow boiling and condensation inside the collector piping under saturated condition is hypothesized. The modeling results indicate that for all-liquid-single-phase fluid flow, the collector efficiency decreases with decreasing mass flow rate. Once the fluid reaches the boiling point at a certain mass flow rate, no significant reduction in efficiency is observed anymore, which is in accordance with the experimental study.  相似文献

The effects of a bambangan juice powder (BJP) drink on plasma vitamin and antioxidant enzyme levels and liver and kidney function were investigated. Thirty-two healthy subjects (12 male and 20 female) ages 24–28 years were recruited from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of University Putra Malaysia, Malaysia. Compared with consuming the placebo, consumption of the BJP drink daily for 9 weeks significantly increased the concentration of plasma β-carotene and ascorbic acid. Plasma total antioxidant status was increased, but liver and kidney functions were unaffected after consumption of the BJP drink. The consumption of a BJP drink resulted in a significant improvement in certain cardiovascular biochemical parameters and thus reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease.  相似文献

In this article, synthesis methods, properties, and applications of antimony oxide nanoparticles are reviewed. Oxides of antimony exist in three phases, namely antimony trioxide, antimony tetroxide, and antimony pentoxide. Physical and optical properties of these nanoparticles are reviewed and compared with their bulk forms. According to literature works, a total of eight synthesis methods have been used to produce these nanoparticles. The size, distribution, shape, and structure of the nanoparticles which are synthesized by different methods are compiled and compared. It is reported that the properties are strongly dependent on the synthesis methods. Advantages and disadvantages of each synthesis method are discussed and compared. Most literatures report on the optical and physical properties of the nanoparticles. Reports on the electrical properties are scarce. As the applications of these nanoparticles cover a wide range, several challenges must be overcome to use them well. These challenges are also being presented and explained in this article.  相似文献

Spatial ability is one of the cognitive means used in problem solving activities particularly when manipulating and processing visuo-spatial information. With the increasing use of network communication, conventional teaching and learning has shifted towards the development of network environments, online learning, real-time interaction and high quality multi-user collaboration. This paper presents our experiment using a Web-based Virtual Environment (WbVE) that has improved a group of pre-service teachers' spatial ability understanding for teaching Engineering Drawing for secondary school subjects. The experiment is carried out in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) comprising of 98 pre-service teachers taking the Computer Aided-Design (CAD) course. Selected subjects were pre-tested at the beginning of the semester with spatial tests focusing on mental rotation and spatial visualization to provide the baseline measurement. A desktop WbVE, which was employed and tested in the CAD laboratories to improve their spatial ability for five weeks of instructional treatment, will be demonstrated. Post-testing of spatial tests revealed significantly the overall spatial ability improvements as measured by the test scores. This paper concludes with a discussion on the impact of WbVE spatial learning that will be used as a precedent in the development of the VE teaching and learning prototypes for secondary school in Malaysia.  相似文献
