Intermetallic particles, Al3Ti and Al3Zr were formed in Al–5mass%Ti and Al–5mass%Zr alloys, respectively, by centrifugal casting, in order to create functionally graded materials (FGMs). At present, no information is available on the influence of the amount of intermetallics on the electrochemical properties of these alloys. In this paper, the corrosion resistance of Al/Al3Ti and Al/Al3Zr FGMs was investigated by open-circuit measurements, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Results suggests that the corrosion resistance of the FGMs is affected by galvanic effects between the intermetallic particles and the metallic matrix. Lower centrifugal forces resulted in an improvement of the electrochemical properties.  相似文献

Bacteria and other microorganisms have a natural tendency to adhere to surfaces as a survival mechanism. This can occur in many environments, including the living host, industrial systems, and natural waters. The general outcome of bacterial colonization of a surface is biofilm formation, which consists of microorganisms immobilized in a variety of polymeric compounds generally referred to as extracellular polymeric substances. Bacterial adhesion to a solid surface is a crucial step in the biofilm process. This step is dependent upon van der Waals, electrostatic, and acid–base interactions. These interactions are influenced by physicochemical properties of the substratum and the bacterial surface, such as hydrophobicity, surface charge, and electron donor–electron acceptor properties. In addition, the roughness of the substratum and the microbiological characteristics of the cell surface, such as cellular appendages and production of exopolysaccharides, can affect the adherence process. To date, many strategies have been developed to decrease the adherence of bacteria to surfaces. Surface modification with the addition of the suitable compounds makes surfaces less attractive for microorganisms and therefore prevents bacterial adherence and biofilm formation.  相似文献

This paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of using different methodologies that apply bending fixtures for determining the fracture toughness of different stones. In general, the experimental results tend to show less variability when applying a 4-point bending mode. The comparison of the results obtained using the different experimental procedures also has stressed the great importance of using sharp notches in order to avoid overestimation of fracture toughness. This specific aspect has been also analysed in detail by performing a fractographic examination of unnotched bar specimens submitted to a 4-point bending test. This procedure shows how it is possible to locate and measure the origin of fracture, which contributes, among other things, to discuss the failure mechanisms of stones. Fracture toughness values also have been estimated via fractographic examination and the results compared with those obtained when applying the experimental methodologies.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the protective effects of amifostine against paclitaxel-induced toxicity to normal and malignant human tissues. Haematopoietic progenitor colony assays were used to establish the number of CFU-GEMM and BFU-E colonies after incubation with WR-1065 alone, Amifostine alone, paclitaxel (2.5 or 5 microM) +/- WR-1065 or amifostine. MTT and alkaline elution assays evaluated the in vitro growth inhibitory and DNA damaging effects, respectively, of paclitaxel with or without amifostine against normal human fibroblasts and human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. This combination was also evaluated in vivo using severe combined immune deficient (scid) mouse models of early (non-palpable tumours) and advanced (palpable tumours) human ovarian cancer. Human 2780 ovarian cancer cells were inoculated subcutaneously while paclitaxel and amifostine were administered intraperitoneally. A brief exposure (15 min) to amifostine not only protected human haematopoietic progenitor colonies from paclitaxel toxicity, but stimulated the growth of CFU-GEMM and BFU-E beyond control values. Amifostine protected normal human lung fibroblasts from paclitaxel-induced cytotoxicity and DNA single-strand breaks. However, paclitaxel cytotoxicity and DNA single-strand breaks were actually enhanced by pretreatment with amifostine in the NSCLC model. Importantly, amifostine did not interfere with paclitaxel antitumour activity even with prolonged exposure (24.5 h) of the lung cancer cells to high concentrations (1.2 mM) in vitro or following five repetitive high doses (200 mg/kg) given to scid mice with human ovarian cancer xenografts. Indeed, under certain circumstances, amifostine resulted in sensitisation of tumour cells to paclitaxel. Our results confirm previous reports of the ability of amifostine to protect normal tissues from the toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs and now extend these observations to paclitaxel.  相似文献

Mycobacteria have emerged as a major cause of opportunistic infections. Until the present, only a few studies have characterized mycobacteria present in the water distribution system of urban areas. In this study, we characterize these microorganisms in the Lisbon water distribution system. Our results indicate a high rate of positivities (90.5%) with mainly saprophytic mycobacteria. Around 63% of these results belong to strains of Mycobacterium gordonae indicating a generalized proliferation of this species in the Lisbon water distribution system. A total of 21.05% of the isolates are from M. kansasii, M. intracellulare and M. chelonae.  相似文献

The present review offers a new look at capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) by centering on the most troublesome aspects of the technique, namely: 1) how to modulate the slope of the pH gradient, for increasing resolution (equivalent to pH gradient engineering, as easily available in immobilized pH gradients); and 2) how to keep proteins in solution at (and in the proximity of) the pl value. A simple solution is offered in the first case: addition, to the standard 2-pH-units interval, of separators or spacers, i.e., of amphoteric molecules (either single or in combination) able to locally flatten the pH and increment resolution. Examples of the separation of fetal and glycated hemoglobins are provided. In the second case, a unique solubilization power (while maintaining full protein integrity and enzyme activity) is obtained if class I solubilizers are used. They consist of mixtures of sugars (e.g., sucrose and sorbitol) at ca. 1 M concentration, with zwitterions (up to 1 M) such as the class of nondetergent sulfobetaines, but also taurine and some of the Good's buffers (e.g., CAPS). In these solvents, the protein exists in a state of superhydration and its solubility is greatly augmented. The review ends with an excursus on the use of isoelectric buffers in zone electrophoretic separations. Such isoelectric buffers offer unique advantages: They permit very-high-voltage gradients (up to 1000 V/cm) and thus minimize analysis times (down to a few min in 30-35 cm long capillaries). This results in a marked increase in resolution, due to minimal diffusion-driven peak spreading. Such buffers are finding unique applications for generating peptide maps of tryptic digests of proteins and also in the analysis of oligonucleotides.  相似文献

The effect of water content in the kneading process of mortars for application as single-coat renders was evaluated in terms of several properties. These properties refer to the mortar product in the fresh and hardened state. Characteristics under evaluation in function of kneading water are, for fresh mortar, the apparent density and entrained air while, for hardened products, apparent density, shrinkage, mechanical properties, abrasion wear and permeability amongst others. If some of these characteristics are obtained by standard tests, others, like abrasion wear, had to be adapted and are described here. Both for fresh and hardened products characteristics, kneading water amount significantly changes them and it was possible to establish the proper content of water to be used in order to get a well-behaved single-coat mortar.  相似文献
