In 1978, the Bangladesh family planning program launched a national program of outreach services that continues to the present. Young married women were hired and trained to visit women in their homes, offer contraceptive services, provide information, and support sustained use over time. This report uses data from two rural districts to assess the effect of the household visitation program on the continuity of contraceptive use. Results of a multivariate analysis show that household outreach has had a pronounced net effect on the continuity of contraceptive use throughout the study period and that the magnitude of this effect has increased with time. This finding suggests that sustained contraceptive use continues to benefit from home-based outreach even after a decade of service encounters. Policy implications of this finding are discussed.  相似文献

A stochastic model (G-O) for the software failure phenomenon based on a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) was suggested by Goel and Okumoto (1979). This model has been widely used but some important work remains undone on estimating the parameters. The authors present a necessary and sufficient condition for the likelihood estimates to be finite, positive, and unique. A modification of the G-O model is suggested. The performance measures and parametric inferences of the new model are discussed. The results of the new model are applied to real software failure data and compared with G-O and Jelinski-Moranda models  相似文献

5-Azacytidine (5 Az)is a potent inhibitor of DNA methylation, and it may allow inactive genes to become expressed. In a previous study, we demonstrated that 5 Az administered to the dam induced apoptosis in the brains of fetal mice. In this study, the 5 Az-induced apoptosis was further characterized in differentiated PC 12 cells as a model for neuronal apoptosis. Cell death, determined by the activity of released lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) into the medium, occurred from 24 to 48 hrs after 5 Az treatment. Toxicity for differentiated PC 12 cells was observed on treatment with more than 10(-1) micrograms/ml of 5 Az, and it reached the maximal level at 10 micrograms/ml. Cycloheximide, an inhibitor of protein synthesis, prevented 5 Az toxicity, suggesting that this cell death required protein synthesis which could be related to the activation of a dormant gene(s). Electrophoresis of DNA from 5 Az-treated cells evoked ladder formation, indicating the cleavage of DNA into nucleosomes. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated bleb formation, the so-called apoptotic bodies on the cell surface. The biochemical and morphological findings indicated that 5 Az-induced cell death occurred in the form of apoptosis. 5 Az-induced cell death was prevented by treatment with cAMP but not by treatment with high K+ or deoxycytidine. These results suggest that a cAMP-sensitive mechanism is involved in 5 Az-induced cell death. PC 12 cells should be of value in elucidating the molecular mechanism of 5 Az-induced neuronal apoptosis.  相似文献

Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a technology that reduces the carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel power stations. A nickel supported on -alumina oxygen carrier is investigated in this study, for use in a CLC process. Oxygen carriers with various nickel loadings on alumina are prepared according to the incipient wetness technique. The reactivity and stability of the prepared oxygen carrier samples, during repeated reduction–oxidation cycles, is demonstrated using temperature programmed reduction and oxidation. Pulse chemisorption results show that the dispersion and active crystallite diameter of the nickel particles remain constant over multiple reduction–oxidation cycles, indicating that no agglomeration occurs up to a nickel loading of 20 wt% supported on alumina. The stability and reactivity of the oxygen carriers, under industrial relevant conditions, are also investigated using the CREC fluidized bed riser simulator. It is observed that a 20 wt% nickel supported on alumina oxygen carrier is stable under industrial relevant fluidized bed reaction conditions, converting 76% of methane to carbon dioxide and water vapor, the combustion products. The metal support interaction is assessed by H2 temperature programmed desorption, which shows that the metal-support interaction decreases as more nickel is loaded onto the alumina support.  相似文献

The combustion characteristics of high-ash Bangladeshi peat was investigated in an atmospheric fluidized-bed combustor at bed temperatures of 750, 800 and 850°C. The particle size was varied from 8.05 mm to 22.76 mm. Combustion of this variety of peat occurred at constant size and thus followed a shrinking core model. Volatile evolution is complete before the particles reached bed temperature and during char combustion the particle temperature exceeded the bed temperature. Combustion times can be represented by power law equations. Results indicated that the burning rate of peat char is a combination of diffusion and kinetic control mechanisms.  相似文献

Recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) and wavelet transform (WT) ANC have been applied and compared for heart sound (HS) reduction from lung sounds (LS) recordings.
