A new approach to the modification of carbon nanotubes with biomolecules for the development of nanoscale biosensors is presented. Alkaline phosphatase was immobilized on the surface of multi-wall carbon nanotubes utilizing a layer-by-layer methodology. Carbon nanotubes were incubated with streptavidin, resulting in the formation of a protein layer on the surface of the nanotubes. Biotinylated alkaline phosphatase was then allowed to bind to streptavidin, anchoring the sensing protein onto the surface. Electrochemical biosensors were constructed by using carbon nanotubes compacted into pellets. 1-Naphthyl phosphate, which is hydrolyzed by alkaline phosphatase to the electroactive 1-naphthol, was used as a substrate. An indoor personal rowing machine (Concept 2 Inc., Morrisville, VT) has been modified for functional electrical stimulation assisted rowing exercise in paraplegia. To successfully perform the rowing maneuver, the voluntarily controlled upper body movements must be coordinated with the movements of the electrically stimulated paralyzed legs. To achieve such coordination, an automatic controller was developed that employs two levels of hierarchy. A high level finite state controller identifies the state or phase of the rowing motion and activates a low-level state-dedicated fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to deliver the electrical stimulation to the paralyzed leg muscles. A pilot study with participation of two paraplegic volunteers showed that FLC spent less muscle energy, and produced smoother rowing maneuvers than the existing On-Off constant-level stimulation controller. 相似文献

The adsorption of micro-organisms at the gas/liquid interface causes both an increase in the oxygen respiration rate and a decrease in the oxygen diffusion coefficient near the interface. An increase in the oxygen consumption rate increases the oxygen mass transfer rate into the bacterial broth but a decreased oxygen diffusion coefficient reduces the mass transfer rate. Well-aligned nitrogen-doped multiwall carbon nanotube arrays have been successfully grown over large areas on quartz and silicon wafers by floating-catalyst chemical vapor deposition at low temperatures (600 degrees C). These nitrogen-including nanotubes, derived from pyridine-ferrocene mixtures, have smaller outer diameters but larger inner diameters compared with carbon nanotubes grown from a xylene-ferrocene mixture under similar conditions. The N-doped nanotubes exhibit bamboo-like structures in the core. Elemental analysis and electron energy loss spectroscopy analysis show that the as-prepared nanotubes contain as much as 2.62 wt.% N, with most of the N concentrated in the inner few shells of the nanotube. Such large-scale arrays of well-aligned N-doped nanotubes on silicon wafers have a current density as high as 23.8 mA/cm2 at an applied electric field of 17 V/micron, which can be further improved by patterning the tubes and coating the silicon substrate with a conductive thin metal film for the fabrication of flat panel displays. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Radon and cigarette smoking have synergistic effects on lung cancer, even when radon concentrations are relatively low. Working through an electric utility company, we sought to reach smoking households with low radon concentrations and motivate smoking cessation or prohibiting smoking in the home. DESIGN: Eligible homes (n = 714) were randomised to receive: (1) the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) "A citizen's guide to radon"; (2) a specially developed pamphlet; or (3) that pamphlet plus brief telephone counselling. PROCEDURE: Utility company "bill stuffers" offered free radon test kits to smoking households. All households received radon test results with an explanatory cover letter. Both the specially developed pamphlet and the telephone counselling emphasised that smoking cessation or prohibiting smoking in the home were the optimal risk reduction strategies. Households were followed up at 3 and 12 months after receiving materials. RESULTS: The specially developed pamphlet and the EPA guide yielded similar outcomes. There was a non-significant trend for telephone counselling to produce greater sustained quitting than the specially developed pamphlet, and phone counselling led to significantly more new household smoking bans. CONCLUSIONS: Working through a public utility company is an efficient way to reach smoking households, and brief telephone counselling is a promising method for promoting household smoking bans and cessation in homes alerted to the risk posed by the combination of radon and smoking. 相似文献

In this paper, a novel transmission technique for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel is proposed that allows simultaneous transmission to multiple users with limited feedback from each user. During a training phase, the base station modulates a training sequence on multiple sets of randomly chosen orthogonal beamforming vectors. Each user sends the index of the best beamforming vector and the corresponding signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for that set of orthogonal vectors back to the base station. The base station opportunistically determines the users and corresponding orthogonal vectors that maximize the sum capacity. Based on the capacity expressions, the optimal amount of training to maximize the sum capacity is derived as a function of the system parameters. The main advantage of the proposed system is that it provides throughput gains for the MIMO broadcast channel with a small feedback overhead, and provides these gains even with a small number of active users. Numerical simulations show that a 20% gain in sum capacity is achieved (for a small number of users) over conventional opportunistic space division multiple access, and a 100% gain (for a large number of users) over conventional opportunistic beamforming when the number of transmit antennas is four. 相似文献

Type E Botulism is an important source of mortality for waterbirds on the lower Great Lakes. The purpose of this study was to determine: 1) the spatial distribution of waterbird mortality and 2) if that mortality possibly impacted the breeding colonial waterbird populations in eastern Lake Ontario. Six islands in eastern Lake Ontario, Canada, were searched, July–November, 2004–2009, for dead/moribund waterbirds. Over 6600 dead/dying birds were located; five species accounted for > 98% of the birds found: double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus), herring, ring-billed and great black-backed gulls (Larus argentatus, Larus delawarensis, Larus marinus, respectively) and Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia). Cormorants accounted for 65–78% of all birds annually. Mortality was greatest in 2005 (7.5%). Most carcasses (91%) were documented on four islands. Most necropsied carcasses (58%, N = 95) were confirmed/suspected to have died from Type E Botulism; it was the only mortality factor identified in all years and in all five main species. These results produced a different guild of affected birds from previous beached bird surveys; virtually no birds that roost on water (loons and waterfowl) were found. Deaths reported here had minimal impact to herring and ring-billed gull, double-crested cormorant and Caspian tern populations nesting in eastern Lake Ontario. However, they accounted for > 100% of the great black-backed gulls breeding there. The species was extirpated from Lake Ontario during the study period. When assessing mortality in aquatic birds, it is crucial to examine off-shore islands, where birds roost, to fully document this critical demographic parameter. 相似文献
